Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer is reporting that the reason Smackdown is going live is because USA Network is not thrilled with the ratings the show has been doing.
It’s no secret that Raw and Smackdown have dropped in the ratings over the past two years however Smackdown has seen a significant drop lately, thanks in part to WWE treating it as their B show. Going live might change that belief regarding the show but now Smackdown – just like Raw – will only have a limited roster after the brand splits.
Meltzer also adds that USA Network will not be paying any additional money to cover for the increase costs of going live. USA pays WWE a hefty sum for every Raw and Smackdown produced.
Smackdown started on USA Network with 2.7 million viewers and just last week the show had 2.1 million viewers. Since January 7, Smackdown has hit the 2.7 million mark on two other occasions only with now the show hovering around the 2.1 and 2.3 million viewer mark.
WWE Superstars will be mixing it up with Scooby-Doo this Summer with the movie Scooby Doo! and WWE: Curse of the Speed Demon coming out on August 9.
The animated movie is co-produced by WWE Studios, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment and Warner Bros. Animation and will be available on Blu-Ray Combo Pack, DVD and Digital HD.
WWE Superstars The Undertaker, Triple H, Sheamus, Paige, Lana, Rsuev, The Miz, Kofi Kingston, Goldust, Vince McMahon, and Stephanie McMahon all recorded their own voice-overs for their respective characters.
This is the second collaboration between WWE and the Scooby-Doo brand. “The huge fan reaction to ‘Scooby-Doo! Wrestlemania Mystery’ proved how well the gang paired with the WWE Superstars. Warner Bros. Home Entertainment is thrilled to partner once again with WWE to create ‘Scooby-Doo! and WWE: Curse of the Speed Demon'” said Mary Ellen Thomas, WBHE Vice President, Family & Animation Marketing. “Scooby-Doo and WWE fans of all ages will enjoy this thrilling, new adventure featuring the voice talents of their favorite WWE Superstars.”
The synopsis for this new movie reads, “When Scooby and the gang attend an off-road racing competition, the last thing they expect is to stumble upon a menacing phantom. However, before they can say “ruh-roh,” things take a turn for the worse, as Inferno schemes to sabotage the race and cause chaos for everyone. With the help of WWE Superstars Triple H, Paige and Sheamus, as well as Scooby’s new driving partner, The Undertaker, it’s up to Scooby-Doo and the Mystery Inc. gang to save the race before it’s too late!”

Judge Kelly L. Banach, who yesterday ruled that Jimmy Snuka is not mentally competent to stand trial in the 1983 murder of his mistress Nancy Argentino, has set a new hearing for December 2 to see if there is any progress and possibly change her decision. As long as Snuka is deemed mentally unfit, the trial will not progress as it is against the law to prosecute someone who is mentally unable to understand the charges.
Yesterday before the ruling, Snuka’s wife Carole took the stand and revealed how her husband thought he was making an appearance at a wrestling event when he was arrested last year according to a report filed by the Morning Call newspaper.
“They were all so happy to see me,” Carole Snuka recalled her husband saying after he was released on bail. “They all wanted my autograph.”
The Snukas also requested that they want to move to Florida with their son as they lost their home due to financial problems. The prosecutors did not object to the request and the judge found no problem granting the request either. No matter what kind of moving is necessary to organize, moving services from NZVanLines.co.nz will meet all the demands.
Carole was joined by her son and Jimmy’s ex wife Sharon at the hearing and they all hugged when the ruling was announced. Sharon is the one who came up with the money to pay the bail for Snuka to leave jail when he was arrested. Meanwhile, a gag order placed on the Argentino family to prevent them from speaking to the media, was not lifted. The family was not at yesterday’s hearing.
WWE released version 3.11 of their app for iOS yesterday that includes a much requested feature that was missing: auto-play.
The 45.5MB update on the App Store will now let you binge-watch your favorite WWE Network shows without having to go to different episodes to watch the next one. All the videos in the In Ring, Originals, Collections, and Vault sections will now automatically play the following episode for you.
The Android version of the app has not been updated yet.
In an interview with Sports Illustrated, former ECW champion and now popular radio show host Taz revealed that WWE had talks with him and CBS about putting The Taz Show live on the WWE Network.
Taz said that these talks didn’t go very far as the folks at CBS Radio were not interested in having the content to be changed or edited to please the WWE brass. “The show is not the show with me having a filter. The show is the show because it’s unfiltered. I’m speaking from the heart and giving my true opinion,” Taz said.
While acknowledging that his opinion doesn’t mean it’s right he doesn’t think that WWE is ready to have someone on their Network sometimes criticizing their product. “It would be awesome to bring ‘The Taz Show’ there, but I don’t fall in line. I’ve never fell in line, and Vince knows that. I wouldn’t bash their content if I was on their network, but I would critique it. I don’t think they want that, but that’s exactly what their network needs,” he added.
Ever since moving from a podcast to a live radio/video show, Taz has received praise by many for his work and the popularity of his show was evident when CBS Radio put him on the air for 3 hours immediately following WrestleMania on all CBS local stations to discuss the event.
The Memorial Day Cena-is-back edition of Monday Night Raw facing some of the hardest competition in a while on television did an average of 3,229,000 viewers, down 41,000 from the previous week.
Hour one started with 3,282,000 viewers, followed by 3,324,000 in the second hour, and then 3,081,000 in the third and final hour. Just to compare, last year’s Memorial Day edition of Raw drew 3,423,000 viewers.
The NBA playoffs easily won the night with a massive 15,996,000 total viewership on TNT. (Ratings credit: Showbuzzdaily.com)
WWE Hall of Famer Jimmy “Superfly” Snuka will not stand trial in the 1983 homicide of his former mistress Nancy Argentino as earlier today, Judge Kelly L Banach ruled that he is not mentally competent to stand trial.
The defendant’s expert-paid witness Dr. Frank Dattilio managed to convince the judge that Snuka suffers from dementia and is unaware of the charges he’s being faced with. While on the stand, Dr. Dattilio said that Snuka’s brain is damaged beyond repair and he has no idea what’s going on around him.
The psychologist paid by the prosecution said that while there is some damage to Snuka’s brain, it’s all related to age and there doesn’t seem to be anything that would prevent the former wrestler to stand trial.
“Unfortunately, justice suffers when it’s delayed,” the judge is quoted by the Morning Call newspaper.
The investigation of the cold case was re-opened in 2013 by Lehigh County District Attorney Jim Martin after some excellent work by a couple of journalists working for The Morning Call newspaper who exposed a never-before-seen autopsy report that labeled the death as a homicide.
The second season of Swerved, the Punk’d-like series on the WWE Network featuring WWE Superstars, will be available this coming Monday right after Monday Night Raw.
Season 2 features nine episodes in total and unlike the first season where a new episode was made available every week, all nine will be uploaded at once. Season two also contains two more episodes than season one.
There were rumors online earlier in the year that the show would not return as those on the wrong end of the deal were not happy about getting, well, swerved. However those rumors were proven untrue and season two looks like it will target more people than before.
The show is produced by Gorilla Flicks with the director of Jackass and Bad Grandpa, Jeff Tremaine, behind the jokes.
Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson keeps getting project after project and the latest one is a new movie, portraying the Doc Savage superhero.
Doc Savage is considered to be the world’s first superhero, appearing first in American pulp magazines during the 1930s. The name of the character is Clark Savage and in the comic books he was a physician, scientist, adventurer, inventor, explorer, researcher, and, also a musician.
“Doc was physically and mentally trained from birth by his father and a team of scientists to become the perfect human specimen with a genius level intellect. His heightened senses are beyond comprehension. He can even identify a women’s perfume from half a mile away. He is literally the master of everything,” wrote Johnson in a post on Instagram announcing the movie.
Shane Black will be directing the movie with Anthony Bagarozzi and Chuck Mondry writing the script. Dwayne Johnson will serve as a producer along with Hiram Garcia, Neal H. Moritz, Ori Marmur and Michael Uslan.
Goldberg has been very very busy on Twitter over the past 24 hours ever since WWE announced that he will be a major part of the WWE 2K17 video game to be released this Fall.
Before the commercial aired, Goldberg wrote, “Wait for it…” and then tweeted “#IMNEXT!” after the commercial played. The former champ retweeted several comments from fans as well as official WWE accounts.
Cesaro said that he’s excited that Goldberg is “swinging by” and invited him to an uppercut party, a tweet that was welcomed by Goldberg himself who replied, “On my way.” Mark Henry also said that it’s awesome that Goldberg will be part of the game, with Goldberg thanking him and everyone else for their support. “Very humbling,” Goldberg said.
Meanwhile an “Easter Egg” popped up in the trailer and some fans who are very attentive to detail noticed the reflection of the sign “Suplex City” in the cop car’s window as Goldberg was being driven away. The Suplex City sign shows up at 1:09 of the trailer for one second.
Variety is reporting that Netflix has greenlit G.L.O.W., a comedy series based on the 1980’s female wrestling league with the same name – Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling. The streaming company has ordered 10 episodes for the series with no premiere date, production date or casting announced yet.
Inspired by the real story behind the wrestlers, the series will be the fictionalized story of an out-of-work actress who finds one last attempt to live her dreams in the form of a weekly series about female wrestlers. G.L.O.W. will be set in Los Angeles and is described as showcasing “big hair and body slams.”
The new series is an extension of the 2011 documentary GLOW: The Story of the Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling which is available now on Netflix.
The series will be exec produced by Jenji Kohan, the woman behind the Netflix original series Orange Is The New Black. Joining her from OITNB is Tara Herrmann who will also serve as executive producer while Liz Flahive (Homeland) and Carly Mensch (Nurse Jackie) will serve as showrunners. They are also the co-creators of the series.
Cody Rhodes can chalk one off from his bucket list as his first opponent in his post-WWE career will be none other than former WWE and TNA champion Kurt Angle.
The two will be main eventing the Wrestling Under The Stars event promoted by Northeast Wrestling on Saturday, August 27 at the Dutchess Stadium in Wappingers Falls, New York. This will be an open-air event held inside a baseball park.
Yesterday in a post on his Facebook page, Kurt Angle said that he doesn’t believe that wrestling has an identity anymore. He said the sport needs something to ignite the fans again in addition to the current young array of talent. “It’s time to lead the charge. Stay tuned,” Angle wrote.
Once again WWE is having an open day at the WWE Performance Center on July 25 with tickets going for $1,499 each. The expensive tour does have some very cool things attached to it but only a limited number of fans can enjoy it…and probably afford it.
The day starts with a breakfast with NXT Superstars and then lunch with both meals included. The coaching staff will host a Q&A and orientation session followed by a Q&A and autograph session with NXT Superstars. After signing a “one-day WWE booking contract,” you will be granted admission to a private NXT Live Event at the WWE Performance Center that you will help produce, manage and watch alongside your favorite NXT Superstars.
Also included are an all-access tour of the WWE Performance Center, an inside look at a private NXT Training Session, learn the ropes during a promo class, then create your very own promo video, and create your very own entrance as NXT Superstars cheer you on.
After the whole experience is over, you will get to go home with a commemorative WWE Performance Center: All Access Credential, WWE Performance Center Gift Bag, limited edition event chair pre-signed by NXT Superstars, WWE Performance Center: All Access Highlight Reel, your personal promo video, and professional photos which are taken throughout the day.
Space is extremely limited and will be sold on a first-come, first-serve basis.
Pre-ordering WWE 2K17 will not only get you the playable character of Goldberg but also two arenas – WCW Monday Nitro and Halloween Havoc – while Goldberg will be available in his WCW and WWE personas.
“After 12 years away from the business, I’m incredibly honored to work with WWE and 2K while following in the footsteps of such greats as Ultimate Warrior, Sting and Arnold Schwarzenegger,” said Goldberg. “My son was a big part of this coming together, and I can’t wait for him to see his dad kicking ass in a WWE ring through the magic of video games. I encountered the likes of The Rock, Triple H, Brock Lesnar and Ric Flair during my WWE career, and now through WWE 2K17, I’ll be taking on the biggest and baddest Superstars of today – showing them once and for all that I am still ‘Da Man!’”
Goldberg last appeared in a WWE ring and on WWE television in 2004 at WrestleMania XX in Madison Square Garden, winning his match against Brock Lesnar. Both men disappeared from WWE after that and the fans in New York let them know what they thought about it.
“Goldberg’s return to WWE action through two WWE 2K17 playable characters, along with the WCW Monday Nitro and Halloween Havoc arenas, collectively delivers a unique opportunity to experience one of WWE’s true living legends,” said Chris Snyder, Vice President of Marketing at 2K. “Fans can now relive many of their favorite Goldberg moments, as well as create brand new ones, as they decide ‘Who’s Next?’ in the virtual ring.”
Developed collaboratively by Yuke’s and Visual Concepts, WWE 2K17 is currently scheduled for worldwide release on the PS4 and PS3 systems, Xbox One and Xbox 360 in October 2016.
The #Hatch social media campaign which started mid last week and unveiled last night ended up being a WWE 2K17 commercial with a surprise: Goldberg.
The commercial involves a bunch of Sheriff deputies first driving and then walking through the woods at night with their flashlights on. They find the hatch and wire it up with explosives and after they donate, the door flies away and a shadow of Goldberg is revealed among the smoke, similar to his usual entrance.
His theme song then kicks in and out walks the former WCW and World Heavyweight champion, escorted by the same Sheriff deputies who found him.
“Pre-order and play as Goldberg,” the commercial then shows before it cuts to Goldberg sitting in the car with sirens on.
What is interesting is that when 2K did this before – first with the Ultimate Warrior and then Sting – both of them actually ended up in the WWE. Goldberg and WWE are not on the best of terms and is mostly Goldberg who did not want to be associated with the company anymore. He did however say multiple times that he would like to perform one more time so his son can see him wrestle live.
If this first baby step leads to somewhere remains to be seen but at least it’s a step.
Lillian Garcia asks the fans to stand and be silent for a 10-bell salute in honour of those who have lost their lives in war, to commemorate Memorial Day in the United States; WWE personnel are on stage as well. A video plays of late-great President Ronald Regan’s 1982 Memorial Day Speech, mixed in with current WWE Stars reciting it, and still-photos of those who serve(d) in the military and their families.
Segment #2: Video Promo, Welcoming, and Arena Promo
The regular Raw video plays, the pyro goes off in the arena, and we are greeted by Michael Cole! Shane McMahon’s music plays, and he dances out to the ring. Stephanie follows, and the two bicker on who is better at beginning Raw.
Shane announces that Smackdown! will now be live, starting Tuesday, July 19th. Steph promotes John Cena’s return tonight, which elicits a mixed reaction of cheers and boos. Tag-Team Champions The New Day interject themselves and boogie to the squared circle. They are thrilled that Smackdown! will be live, but then became flooded with “paranoia,” since a Brand-Extension is also going to happen. Kofi Kingston, Xavier Woods, and Big E. suck-up to the runners of Raw, citing their approval of “The New Era,” and inquire “where is The New Day going?”
Stephanie does not answer straight-up, and the trio accuse her of “dodging the question.” They then ask the McMahons “who is going to run Smackdown! live?” Neither know right now, and the Tag Champs egg on a “sibling rivalry.” Big E. wants Steph and Shane to participate a dance challenge; Stephanie is not wanting, but Shane is good to go! He busts his moves, but Steph doesn’t get a chance, as The Vaudevillians interrupt.
Simon Gotch and Aiden English do not seem impressed, and are scheduled to take on two-out-of-the-three Tag Champs, next!

Segment #7: Arena Promo
John Cena comes back and is greeted pretty-warmly with “welcome back” chants! “Let every nation know, whether they wishes well or ill, that we will pay any price, we will bear any burden, we will meet any hardship, we will support any friend, we will oppose any foe to assure the survival and the success of liberty. There are many brave heroes who have fallen, proving those words to be absolutely true. Memorial Day is a celebration of that sacrifice. I am very grateful to finally be back home. But on this day, it is with the utmost respect, that I honour the friends, the families, and most importantly the heroes that have paid the ultimate price to keep our liberty in tact.
You see, you see because ‘liberty’ is ‘freedom.’ And ‘freedom’ is our ‘pulse;’ it is our ‘lifeblood.’ It is what drives us; it is what makes us feel. ‘Freedom’ means you can feel however you want. You can dress how you want; you can look how you want; you can listen to your music; stand at the top of your chair and scream at the top of your lungs! It is ‘freedom’ that lets me plant these two feet and say it loud and proud: ‘I am back on MONDAY NIGHT RAW!’
But now, now that poses a whole new question, doesn’t it? The question is, ‘do I still belong here?’ Many thanks, but in my absence, a ‘New Era’ has arrived, which means new names; which means new faces. And every one of those new names and faces is thinking the same damn thing: that my best are behind me and it’s only a matter of time before they move up and I move out. So let’s get real with them. ‘New Era,’ ‘Old Era,’ ‘Golden Era,’ ‘Roaring ‘20s,’ ‘Ming Dynasty;’ the only ‘era’ that’s happening is the one in judgment from the new names and the new faces that think I will just roll over and go away. I WILL NOT GO QUIETLY INTO THE NIGHT. And if ‘the future’ is indeed upon us, well ‘the face that runs the place’ says this: ‘the future damn sure MUST GO THROUGH ME!’”
“The Phenomenal” A.J. Styles walks out. Major “A.J. Styles” and “Let’s go Cena” calls from the crowd! He gives props to Cena for his hard-work ethic, both in-ring and in communities; he welcomes him back. Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson also walk out; they are not pleased with A.J. aligning himself with John and proclaim to beat both of them up.
The Club enter and stare down both Cena and A.J.; John takes off his hat and shirt, but A.J. hits him instead! Gallows, Anderson, and Styles kick away at Cena, and A.J. punches many more times until he feels satisfied, which was even after the referees had to run out and separate The Club! A.J., Luke, and Karl give The Club/Kliq/Wolfpac sign to each other and walk away. The commentators detest the trio for what they just did!

Match #5: Single – Natalya VS. Dana Brooke (with Women’s Champion Charlotte)

He makes the hot-tag to Sami, who is fresh and all over all three opponents!

Chris drives Dean with the Codebreaker, but Kevin tags himself and he and Jericho argue! Cesaro Swings Jericho around, but Del Rio backstabs him! Ambrose ends up giving Dirty Deeds and covering for the victory!
Winners via Pinfall: Cesaro, Dean Ambrose, and Sami Zayn
