Rampage TV report for 03/10/2023

Arena: Golden 1 Center

City: Sacramento, CA

Last Week’s Rating: 394,000 overall; 0.10 in 18-49 demo

It’s Friday Night, and you know what that means…  it’s time for our Rampage Review!

…..

Action Andretti vs Sammy Guevara

Backstory: Andretti & the JAS have been feuding since approximately 30 BCE

We tuned in to Sammy lying in la-z-boy pose in the corner.  No entrances, because who has time for those?

The action quickly spilled to the floor.

Action flung him back inside, Sammy rolled across the ring and out on the other, Andretti pursued him with a tope through the ropes, following up with an uppercut and chop to the chest against the barricades.

A running shotgun dropkick continued the assault back In the ring, a split-leg followed for two.

Crowd incredibly quiet.

Guevara caught him with a chop, flung him overhead onto the apron but ate a lariat when Andretti landed on his feet, then did so again into a catapult out of a springboard.  Guevara skinned the cat, Action belted him back outside with a lariat but saw a dive from the top met by a Guevara dropkick to bring the break.

Much of that last sequence seemed like look how athletic we are, rather than a contest.

Sammy had the dreaded chin lock clamped as we came back, AA landed on his feet out of a belly to back; the two then collided in mid-air thinking cross-body.  Andretti landed a flurry: diving clothesline, discus, hanging neckbreaker.

Guevara again bailed outside but ate a thrust kick from the apron and an Asai moonsault.  Then a springboard 450 next for another two.  Beautifully done.

Picking up a head of steam, Sammy hurtled right into a Spanish Fly for another dos.  Then got his knees up to block the running shooting star, hit a gut-wrench ddt; Andretti rolled to the outside to avoid the pin.

(Don’t know a babyface who isn’t established should be doing that.  Seems like something either a heel or a wily veteran does.  And nothing in between.)

Sammy then positioned him on the table at ringside before heading to the top.  But was quickly cut-off, ate a superkick, landing on the table himself as Action went upstairs, just about landing the splash as Jericho begged the ref to DQ him.

Rolling Sammy back in, he headed up top once more, Daniel Garcia shoved him off the top into the GTH: 1,2,3.  Sure we’ve seen that somewhere before:

Same match, same show, same interference, same interferer, same victor.  Only two weeks apart.  And not as good.  And the crowd didn’t care.

While AEW don’t like doing DQ’s, I’d take some over this constant interference.  Both the JAS & the Elite have had storylines become reality with fans legitimately getting fed-up at all the screwy endings.  Not a good thing.

WINNER: Sammy Guevara

No time to sell the significance of anything, quick, there’s a Darby Allin package!  Allin said he was ‘too real’ and referred again to going out in a blaze of glory, he’ll outline his plans on Dynamite.

…..

Jack Perry promo package.  He said the feud with Christian took a lot out of him, but he learnt how to pick his shot.  So everyone with a title belt, watch out.

MJF?  Though honestly could be any of the titles, particularly if Jarrett wins.

…..

Powerhouse Hobbs & QT Marshall promo.  The premiere episode of QTV on Dynamite.

Thanks a lot QT, that’s hundreds of thousands of people who won’t sleep a wink till Wednesday.

The Acclaimed vs Jack Cartwheel & Starboy Charlie

Backstory: None

To channel Steve Austin: ‘What exactly is a ‘Starboy’?  Do you like stars?  Do you like… don’t answer that’.

Guess he’s playing off the Weeknd song?  Still a weird name.  And even weirder look.  Like if Super Mario lost too much weight and got cheaper overalls with no shirt.

The Acclaimed’s entrance woke the crowd as Jericho asked JR if he’d ever been scissored.  Then referenced the offer for the Acclaimed to join the JAS, arguing that they hadn’t really laughed.

The former champs hit Scissor Me Timbers on Cartwheel, bringing in Starboy: Arrival, Mic Drop, squash complete.

Shouty & Switchblade hit the ramp with JAS shirts, nothing else happened.

I know Cartwheel has some buzz so a bit strange throwing him out here like this.

WINNER: The Acclaimed

Jericho, Guevara & Garcia promo’d the trios title match next Dynamite.  The Ocho noting it’s a night of firsts.  First time they’ve been in the ring with the HOB, first time in years Jericho and Omega have been in the ring.  And first time they ‘become the trios championships’.

Almost as if the match is worth more than one week’s build.

Might’ve wanted to re-shoot that last line.

Preston Vance vs Konosuke Takeshita

Backstory: Takeshita thinks he needs to go back to Japan since he never wins, Don Callis offered to help and asked him to stay a while

Takeshita got a nice reaction, not on the level of the Acclaimed but still good.  As Don Callis replaced Schiavone on comms.  He and Jericho were immediately chummy, the latter saying he’d let Wednesday’s remarks go since they’ve been friends so long.

Vance took advantage of a rope break, offered a sarcastic ‘konichiwa’ and bow; Takeshita responded with his killer diving clothesline then vaulted onto him via cross body as the ads arrived.

A lariat and German from the Import upon our return.  A double discus left both down, Vance ran in as Takeshita got his boot up then hit a knee strike off the middle rope and a blue thunder bomb for two.  A wicked knee strike to the face should’ve ended things but Jose put Vance’s foot on the ropes and was laid out by Takeshita.

Who returned to the ring to a big lariat, Vance in disbelief when he kicked out.  But slapped on his full nelson (feels like we’ve seen a colorless, muscular guy with a full nelson somewhere before), Takeshita got a rollup for two then a spinning backslide with a high stack for the win.

Crowd happy their guy won.  Presumably his victories will get more convincing as he goes.

Jericho and Callis continued to be very friendly.  Didn’t like that.

WINNER: Konosuke Takeshita

Swerve Strickland promo.  Maybe he overestimated (I’m sure he said this but meant underestimated) Keith Lee.  Who took out both his guys.  But Swerve hasn’t ‘thrown every bullet yet’, he has something else coming.  He won’t lose the war.  Lastly warning Lee to keep eyes in the back of his head.  ‘Hoodies… stay up’.

Not his best work.

…..

Mark Briscoe promo.  It’s time to ‘move on’ as regards the ROH tag titles, announcing they’ll be up for grabs in a Reach for the Sky ladder match at Supercard of Honor.  Then introduced the first competitors, his ‘amigos’, the Lucha Bros.

Like this unit; do not want the Bros in ROH.  Hopefully a one-off.

Briscoe’s so natural on the mic.  Just sounds like he’s out there being himself instead of trying to act.

…..

Recap of the Hook/Hathaway feud.  Matt Hardy offered to personally train Stokely for the match.

……

Excalibur voiced over the history behind the main event.  Seeing the number of people in the house for that first Dynamite made this week’s audience even worse.

Riho vs Nyla Rose

Backstory: The first two female champ’s in AEW go at it

Like her fellow countryman, Riho got her usual nice reaction.

JR put over the Sakura/Riho match last week.

Riho kept attacking Nyla and being violently rejected.  Her quickness helped her avoid a senton but a bodyslam attempt backfired badly as she took one from Nyla.  Bridging up out of the subsequent pin, a pair of dropkicks sent Nyla packing to the outside.

Before taking flight; Rose snatched her out the air, Riho slipped behind to shove Rose knees-first into the steps.  The ref saved Riho from an advancing Marina Shafir.

As the smaller woman headed upstairs once more, this time the cross body landed, quick kick out.  After which Riho looked for a suplex, no dice, Rose hauled her up for a delayed one the Bulldog would’ve been proud of.

Before Riho avoided a splash in the corner but was dragged off the apron by Shafir to eat a judo throw on the outside.

Ads.

Riho got her feet up to block an attack in the corner, managed a tejeiras but was run over by Rose.  Then deposited atop the buckle, though shook Nyla off to hit a diving hurracanrana, dropkick, footstomp off the top, very close two.

In a sign of her cardio but mostly the pace of the match, she wasn’t even breathing heavily.

Nyla grabbed a headlock then smashed the smaller woman with a powerslam.  Count of two.  Before landing her diving knee with Riho draped across the ropes.  The crowd cheering at the subsequent kickout as they chanted for Riho.

Rose headed up top, missing everything with a senton, Riho responded with a Northern Lights, the crowd amazed, Nyla kicked out at two.  Riho then lined up a knee strike, missed, was crushed against the buckle, avoided a cannonball, crucifix bomb, pair of kickouts from Nyla.

Marina Shafir grabbed Rihos foot, but she slipped out of the Beast Bomb to snag the win via cradle for the second sneaky pin in a row.  If Nyla hasn’t appeared on TV for months and months, surely it’s okay to pin her more convincingly than this?

You cannot protect everyone at the same time.

After her victory, Riho was attacked by Nyla & Marina Shafir.  The nW-no (now christened the Outcasts because the Externals and the Alfrescos were taken) followed, tagging an ‘L’ on the former champ.

Where the hell were Britt & Jamie this week?  If they’re still injured after the attack at Revolution, AEW should tell us that.  Follow-up on the ppv has not been good.

Related, it seems Riho will side with Britt & Jamie (despite this story starting around Hikaru Shida).

WINNER: Riho

…..

 Next Dynamite:

  • Jeff Jarrett vs Orange Cassidy, International Championship
  • MJF’s re-Bar Mitzvah
  • HOB vs Elite vs Jericho, Guevara & Garcia, Trios Titles
  • Jade Cargill vs A Canadian, TNT Title open-challenge
  • The Outcasts (Saraya & etc) will appear
  • Debut of QTV with Marshall & Hobbs
  • Hangman Page, Evil Uno & Stu Grayson vs BCC

…..

Overall impressions

AEW continue to fail badly in following-up on events and storylines, leading to a loss of momentum for several acts.  For example Jack Perry, who after finally ending his feud with Christian was given about one minute of tv time.

Now I’m guessing he’ll interrupt Max’s Bar Mitzvah on Wednesday.  Which is a step in the right direction.  But surely all the more reason to prominently feature him this week?

In addition, the women’s champion hasn’t been seen since Sunday, we’ve received no mention of her whatsoever, the same goes for perhaps the biggest star in the division.  It should be a big deal when the champion doesn’t appear all week.  If it’s not; she’s not.

And that’s without getting into Strickland, Lee and a bunch of others.

The show itself was nothing special.

Check Out

  • There was nothing bad, but nothing great either

Thanks for reading.  Have a great weekend!

Kofi Kingston out with ankle injury

Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer is reporting that Kofi Kingston is suffering from an ankle injury and will be out for the next five weeks.

Due to his injury, he won’t be participating in tonight’s fatal five-way match featuring also LA Knight, Karrion Kross, Sheamus, and Drew McIntyre. Instead, Xavier Woods will be taking his place in this match where the winner will get an Intercontinental title shot at WrestleMania 39 against Gunther.

Meltzer adds that at this point, no surgery is required so Kingston could be back in action in theory next month. Unfortunately for him, he will be missing WrestleMania.

“Superstar” Billy Graham back in hospital with acute renal failure

WWE Hall of Famer “Superstar” Billy Graham is on dialysis after suffering acute renal failure this week.

In an update from his official Facebook page, Graham is now recovering at the Mayo Clinic hospital in Phoenix where to make matters worse, he also has something in his lungs, although it is not pneumonia.

A GoFundMe campaign with a goal of $25,000 has been set up to help Graham pay off his medical bills, which his insurance will only pay a portion of. The campaign also states that once he is stabilized and released from hospital, he is facing at least two months in a nursing facility.

WWE 24 series returning with a behind-the-scenes look at WrestleMania 38

WWE Network

The popular WWE 24 documentary series is returning later this month with a brand new episode on WrestleMania 38.

The episode premieres on Peacock and WWE Network on March 27, just days before WWE returns with WrestleMania 39 in Los Angeles.

This is the first WWE 24 episode since April of last year, with the last one being a look behind the scenes of the 2022 Royal Rumble. WWE produced only four documentaries in 2021 for WWE 24, with Big E, The Miz, and two episodes on WrestleMania 37.

WWE cut back on a lot of productions for the WWE Network after a firing spree during the COVID pandemic.

Cena visits Cody Rhodes’ and QT Marshall’s Nightmare Factory wrestling school

John Cena took some time out of his busy filming schedule to visit the Nightmare Factory Training facility, the wrestling school ran by Cody Rhodes and AEW’s QT Marshall.

Addressing Cena as the GOAT, the school’s Twitter account posted a photo of Cena along with the trainees, saying that Cena graced the ninth class as the guest speaker.

“Nobody better to fire them up for their showcase on 3/23,” the Nightmare Factory wrote before adding a thank you to Cena.

Cena and Rhodes had their first interaction since Cody’s return on Monday Night Raw this week where Cena introduced the Royal Rumble winner to the fans. The two shared a hug together and Cena then raised Cody’s arms.

First-round of talks with WWE potential buyers to take place next month

In the same story by CNBC about WWE talking with two states over legalizing betting on their matches, the report also stated that WWE executives will be meeting potential buyers next month.

The story made it sound like that no bids were made yet but talks next month will be done with prospective buyers in preparation for first-round bids.

WWE Executive Chairman Vince McMahon is seeking a total of $9 billion for the company, a price which is well over the company’s market cap right now, currently in the range of $6 billion.

In related news, during the Morgan Stanley investor conference, FOX CEO Lachlan Murdoch said that if WWE ultimately sells, he hopes the new owner is a good partner and they are ready to engage with the company on the upcoming television rights when they ask.

Asked about bidding to keep Smackdown on FOX, Murdoch said that renewal might be dictated by the performance on the overall sports portfolio.

Brian Cage departing AEW and ROH at the end of the month

Brian Cage is set to leave AEW and Ring of Honor according to Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful who is reporting that his last appearance will be the Supercard of Honor show on March 31 during WrestleMania weekend.

Sapp writes that the company was hoping to extend his contract by a few months to cover the time out he was injured but Cage has fought back on that clause and the two sides came to an agreement to work through the next ROH pay-per-view.

Cage was offered an extension to his current deal but the current ROH six-man tag team champion refused the offer and many believe he is on the way to WWE.

The former FTW champion was off TV for months but was brought back over the past couple of weeks when rumors started spreading that Cage was looking to leave the company.

WWE looking to legalize betting on matches in Colorado and Michigan

WWE logo

CNBC is reporting that WWE has held talks with state gambling regulators in Colorado and Michigan to explore the possibilities of legalized betting on their matches.

The company has engaged the services of Ernst & Young to help convince the regulators on the integrity of their results to explain how they will keep results from leaking to the public.

CNBC said that Ernst & Young has worked with the Academy Awards and the Emmys to keep results secret as betting is allowed on those pre-determined events.

CNBC added that in discussions on how to keep the results secret, WWE proposed that results of matches could be locked in months before and the wrestlers wouldn’t know the result until shortly before the match.

Both WWE and E&Y have refused to comment on the story while the Colorado Division of Gaming told CNBC that they are not considering adding WWE betting for now.

Betting on wrestling events is already available in many countries around the world.

The main events in WWE in 2023

The main wrestling promotion World Wrestling Entertainment has pleased its fans with a bright start to the year. Cool and memorable performances of the fighters at the Royal Rumble continued with the February PPV Elimination Chamber, held in Canada. What awaits us next?

Roman Reigns’ record for the duration of the title race in the status of Undisputed WWE Universal Champion, the victory of Cody Rhodes in the “battle royale”, as well as the fate of the Uso brothers team – all this and much more attracts WWE fans before the upcoming confrontations.

We decided to make the top of the main events in the WWE world in 2023. If you haven’t watched wrestling yet, we advise you to start following it soon!

  1. WWE WrestleMania 39

The annual largest wrestling event will be held in 2023 in Los Angeles, which is even timed to the PPV’s general motto “WrestleMania Goes Hollywood”. This event will be held at SoFi Stadium April 1 and April 2, 2023. As for the fight card, the organizers did not delay with the most anticipated announcement. Roman Reigns and Cody Rhodes will meet in the main event for the title of Undisputed WWE Universal Champion. The current title holder has been with him for almost 900 days. Rode’s victory at the Royal Rumble made it clear that the contender for the title is in decent shape. Cody has recovered from his injury. On the other hand, Reigns has a conflict in The Bloodline group.

Of the announced fights, we also highlight the battles of Logan Paul and Seth Rollins and the SmackDown Women’s Championship Match between champion Charlotte Flair and Rhea Ripley. The overall scope of WrestleMania 39 is impressive. Fans are waiting for two days of amazing fights. The closer the event is to the scheduled date, the more announcements of fights we will get that WWE fans will definitely be pleased with!

  1. WWE Money in the Bank

Pay-per-view in Europe at the legendary The O2 Arena in London – what could be cooler?! On July 1, the English public will warmly welcome the fighters of World Wrestling Entertainment, among whom there are enough natives of the islands. Scotsman Drew McIntyre will definitely be given a serious match, and Irishman Seamus showed himself well in the “battle royale” so the veteran has enough strength for the English public.

Do not forget about the main annual fights on Money in the Bank. The participants will come together in the fight for briefcases with contracts for championship fights. There were cases that they were implemented on the same day on MITV. Last year, Austin Theory unsuccessfully used its briefcase when it failed to defeat United States Champion Seth Rollins in the designated fight.

Watching world sports events from the screens is, of course, good, but not as exciting as visiting live! At the slightest opportunity, go on a trip to watch the main events of wrestling. From the duel you can organize a whole adventure for you! Visit a new country or city, live in a different cultural environment during the event, travel around a new territory! Are you planning to visit London and see one of the fights? Why would not rent a car and drive around the city, visiting significant places? Renting a luxury car in popular service, like https://renty.ae/brands/ferrari, which is famous in the UAE, gives a special feeling of comfort and luxury while traveling. Rental services will definitely make any movement much more convenient and profitable. Let it be not just an event, but a unique adventure!

  1. WWE SummerSlam

Ford Field in Detroit, Michigan will host the main summer wrestling event. Uncompromising battles are waiting for us on August 5, and World Wrestling Entertainment has not yet announced a fight card, as there are a little more than 5 months left before the event itself. Despite this, you can warmly remember the last SummerSlam. Last year, the promotion created a great resonance around the confrontation between Roman Reigns and Brock Lesnar. As a result, everything came to the Last Man Standing Match for the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship in which the current champion remained with his title.

AEW All-Atlantic title rebranded to International title

The AEW All-Atlantic title has been rebranded to the AEW International title ahead of next week’s match featuring champion Orange Cassidy taking on Jeff Jarrett.

AEW President Tony Khan announced the news on Dynamite last night.

“Next week marks the fifth and final defense of the AEW All-Atlantic Championship on international soil. It is the only AEW championship to ever change hands on international soil,” Khan said.

He then said that in partnership with Warner Bros. Discovery to support the release of Shazam: Fury of the Gods movie, the title has been rebranded.

“Next week in Winnipeg, we will level up the championship,” Khan added.

The AEW All-Atlantic title was established on June 8, 2022 and the inaugural winner was Pac, winning it at the Forbidden Door pay-per-view on June 26.

Sarray departing WWE, press conference in Japan on March 13

Japanese star Sarray is departing WWE “amicably” and will be holding a press conference in Japan on March 13 to announce her return there. The news was broken by Tokyo Sports.

Her first match back in Japan will take place at the Sareee-ISM show on May 16 at the Shinjuku Face in Tokyo. Prior to joining WWE, Sarray used the name Sareee.

The 26-year-old signed with WWE in February 2020 but delayed her arrival due to the COVID-19 pandemic and was allowed to continue working in Japan until April when she finally moved to the United States.

Unfortunately, her NXT career never took off and was not used to the best of her abilities. She last appeared on NXT TV in August of last year in a losing effort against Mandy Rose.

Before joining WWE she wrestled for World Woman Pro-Wrestling Diana for nearly nine years.

Dynamite TV Report for 03/08/2023

Arena: Golden 1 Center

City: Sacramento, CA

Last Week’s Rating: 833,000 overall; 0.27 in 18-49 demo

God damn, that trios match.  Comfortably better than any of the best of seven.  The House of Black need to be on tv every week.  And we need Kenny vs Matthews & Kenny vs Malakai asap.

Christian/Perry was also very good.  Kudos to Cage for the turtle-neck singlet.  Though the way they lowered the coffin was laughably ‘AEW’.  Rush, rush, rush, quick! Next segment!

Mox vs Hangman was just way too bloody for me.  Knew there’d be some but hoped it’d be dessert rather than the entire menu.  Moxley deserves a ton of credit for the finish, frantically tapping in a match where he had ‘home court’.  Couldn’t have done more for Page.

The wrestling’s there, now we just need the stories to go along with it.

It’s Wednesday night, it’s Dynamite.  Let’s go.

…..

The show’s opening was all highlights from Revolution instead of the usual intro.

Jay Lethal vs Orange Cassidy, All-Atlantic Title

Backstory: Long story short – Lethal & co. attacked Cassidy’s friends recently on Rampage

After all the matches AEW refuse to repeat, they choose this for a third go-around?  Per Tony Khan it’s done ratings in the past.  If people wanted to see Jay Lethal that badly, ROH wouldn’t have been sold.

Both came ‘heavy’, but all of Lethal’s entourage were quickly ushered backstage as we were shown highlights of their previous encounters.  There was then the weekly technical screw-up as the announcers started doing-so over the loudspeakers.

Cassidy went right to a headlock as they continued pushing him as the ‘hottest’ wrestler in the company.  He kept working the headlock in between brief sequences.  Lethal bailed outside for a good minute.

From how tight the cameras were, they cannot have pulled a great crowd here.

Both countered in and out of big moves: Lethal Injection… Beach Break… until a second Lethal Injection attempt saw Cassidy boot Lethal in the arm.  Which he continued working over in the corner as Lethal headed outside once more.  Cassidy was caught on a dive but slipped out to fling Lethal into the ring-post.  Lethal reciprocated into the steps.

Then caught Cassidy re-entering via dragon screw against the ropes.  And crotched Cassidy before targeting the knee again, sending Orange tumbling outside as the ref began to count.  Lethal dropped an elbow but sold his own arm after Cassidy’s earlier work on it, coming back with a knee-breaker against the post as the ads arrived.

If anyone wondered how much AEW’s audience is aging, the first ad was Just for Men.  They also pushed the new behind-the-scenes show debuting March 29th.  For AEW that is, not Just for Men.  Next on Behind the Beard…

Cassidy went back after the arm, Lethal the knee: both struggled to execute moves because of their injuries.  Jay missed a charge in the corner, Cassidy clambered up top, Lethal met him, attempting a suplex, being fought off, Orange came off with a diving ddt, then a tornado.

Two slaps of the mat.

Cassidy then collapsed attempting the Orange Punch (did not look believable).  Lethal went straight for the figure four, Orange finally scrambled to the ropes.

Both ended up on the apron, Jay fired chops, threw fists; Cassidy smashed him against the ropes Sheamus-style until knocking him back inside, Lethal dropped him out of a gorilla press, went for the figure four once again; Cassidy snagged a small package for two but got up right into a Lethal Combination.

Jay headed up top, badly missed an elbow, kinda landing on Cassidy’s knees.  Then caught Cassidy in a cutter while countering the Orange Punch for a close two.  A thrust kick to the knee followed, Lethal Injection on the way but Jay buckled due to his injured arm, leaving him open for an Orange Punch as Cassidy retained.

As much as I don’t want to see Jay Lethal, this was a very good opener.

Lethal went for the Golden Globe, the ref cut him off, you knew an attack from behind was coming.  And of course, Jeff Jarrett did just that with the Stroke.  That’s what I get for saying something positive.

Jarrett then broke his guitar across the knee.  Yaaaaaay, he’s going after another title.

Did I mention the young audience has left in droves?

WINNER: Orange Cassidy

Knew this was an angle.  They showed footage of Wardlow’s smashed-up rental car and told us his belt had been stolen.  Cut to Hobbs with Renee: Will said Wardlow only had one thing left, his championship.  ‘Tonight, I’m taking that.’

Cheers from the audience.  Uh-oh.

…..

They’d pushed that Hangman was ‘next’ during the opener.  Ricky Starks was out instead.  To proclaim he was having a hell of a week after spending time in Cali & beating Jericho.  So what’s next?  ‘I’m not sure.’  The Bullet Club logo appeared, the music played, distracting Starks as Juice Robinson attacked from behind.

That’s twice in two segs that the babyface has been tricked and caught from behind.

…..

Schiavone and Wardlow (wearing an FTR shirt which he said they’d loaned him).  He promised to ‘demolish’ Hobbs and offered to make tonight ‘anything goes’.  The crowd seemed to be behind Wardlow too.

…..

Ruby Soho vs Skye Blue

Backstory: Soho faces an AEW Original after her recent turn

From the ring, Renee introduced Soho.  Pretty loud boos.  Saraya and Toni came to the top of the ramp but Soho came to the ring alone.  Renee asked why she’d joined them.

Apparently, the fans ‘created this monster’.  The people cheered when Britt beat her in her first match.  In the semi’s of the Owen tourney they cheered Statlander against her (loud cheers here in the arena too) and booed Soho.

Called the fans ‘fat, bearded trolls’ (just about spitting the words out amid weak STFU chants).  She and the others came to help AEW but the foundation is broken, the ‘entitled little s**** & rookies… Tony Khan ‘gives it (opportunity) to them’.

This was very bad-WWE.  It’s the fans’ fault, they never appreciated me.  Don’t know if that’s supposed to be ironic or whether it just sucked.  The result was the same either way.

And was unconvincing: acting isn’t a strong suit of Soho.

Match starts here

She attacked Skye Blue quickly, flung her into the post, after which Blue was loopy.  But tried to fight back.  A Soho back-heel trip got two as the break beckoned.

Blue was still basically out on her feet as we returned, a pair of suplexes dropping her, Ruby twice missed punts (very badly), after which Blue fought back, step-up knee strike, snapmare, her basement enziguri, boot up in the corner, diving cross body, count of two.

Then a strange sequence where Skye just slipped off Soho’s butt/back led to Ruby using the hair to set-up Destination Unknown.

Post-match, Soho and her crew spray-painted Blue.  The stupid, moronic, idiotic babyfaces continued as Willow Nightingale came out and tried to calmly ‘talk sense’ to Soho.  And got the crap beaten out of her three-on-one.

WINNER: Ruby Soho

The Adam Page promo we were promised forty minutes ago was ‘next’, finally arrived.

Joined by Renee, Hangman (sporting a black eye) was asked how he’s doing after Revolution.

Page said he’s been better.  He let his heart blacken on Sunday, but it showed what’ll happen if anyone wants to try him.  He’ll beat you, choke you, take you to hell and ride-off afterward (honestly sounded just like Moxley).

Then apologized to Renee for ‘what you had to see’.  Though suggested Mox was the person to blame if anyone was.

…..

MJF promo post-match.  He made Danielson tap, he’s the devil and he has the greatest prize of them all.  He’s single in San Diego.  On March 15th he’s gonna celebrate the Ides of March with his re-Bar Mitzvah.  ‘My reign of terror, has just begun.’

Was hoping they’d forgotten that last phrase.

Undoubtedly, someone’s going to interrupt, but most candidates are already occupied based on tonight.  Adam Cole?  A challenge for his first match back?  Tie in the concussion thing with the Danielson storyline?

…..

Schiavone mid-ring to bring out FTR.  Excalibur inferred that he hoped they were here to say they were staying in AEW (Dax on his podcast said nothing had changed and they still only have about a month on their deals).

Deafening FTR chants, easily the loudest the fans have been all night.

Cash talked about how bad the last few months had been, losing all their titles in the space of a month.  Then losing one of their best friends, Wheeler tearing up as the crowd chanted ‘Jay’.  But he cannot sit at home while the Gunns call themselves the best team in wrestling.  He put them over a bit but called them ‘entitled little assholes’.

Dax told the fans that they and professional wrestling accepted him when he didn’t feel deserving of love.  More loud FTR chants.

And that the last memory he has with one of his best friends (the third match against the Briscoes) was ruined by the Gunns.  So now they’ve got to beat the Gunns for themselves, the Briscoes and ‘all of y’all, Top Guys… out’.

Short but effective, backed by a rabid crowd.

…..

Renee with Jade & Leyla Grey.  Cargill laughed at the idea of her feeling tested.  She challenged any Canadian for next Wednesday in Winnipeg.

Chris Jericho, Sammy Guevara & Daniel Garcia vs Top Flight & AR Fox

Backstory: None

Hopefully the start of some regular trios action.  Excalibur put over the phenomenal title match Sunday.

Fox and Jericho kicked things off, Fox ducking a series of lariats before kipping up into an enziguri then skinning the cat into a dropkick in the corner.  And taking flight onto the vet who’d bailed outside.

Jericho ran to his corner, hugging Guevara’s waist before tagging in his fellow Sex God.  The pair then hit their pose (the whole JAS joined in) after a lariat.  Darius tagged in and Sammy bailed to hug Garcia, tagging the youngster who ate an Asai moonsault from Dante but caught him with a right hand after Angelo Parker grabbed the youngster’s ankle.

Break time.  Almost total ‘comedy’ thus far.

Garcia was dancing on the apron as we returned, so not much had changed.  Sammy kept cutting off Dante from the tag until being flung into the air, allowing the tag to Fox.  Who hit a cutter on Garcia, sent Jericho outside, then crushed Guevara against the ropes while dropkicking Jericho on the outside.  And rolling across the ring to hit a double cutter for a two count on Garcia.

Darius in, deadlift German, two on Garcia.  Who grabbed the hair to tag Jericho.

The vet stumbling into a Spanish fly then a back-kick for another two.  Everyone in, Dante took out Garcia with a dive, Fox=Guevara & Parker (who stood there way too long, not helped by the camera work), leaving Jericho and Darius in the ring, the youngster cradling out of the Walls for two until Hager caught him with Floyd, right into the Judas Effect for the usual BS win.

A nothing match with a few highlights.  Not what I was hoping for to kick-start an actual trios division.

JAS challenge HOB & Elite come out

Parker made a ‘light the beam’ reference (you cannot be a heel and say that in Sacramento, so lame).  Menard said (shouted) that tonight is the the one year anniversary of the JAS.

Garcia said they should be #1 contenders for the trios titles.  Jericho then directly challenged the House of Black to get their asses in the ring.

The lights went out.  Carry on My Wayward Son struck-up as the Elite came out instead.  To a decent number of boos because the crowd wanted the champs.

Omega acknowledged that they and Jericho had stayed out of each other’s business for three years, which he’d like to think was mutual respect.

Callis then demanded the mic.  Saying it was ‘obvious’ that the Elite were the #1 contenders.  Then that while they’d been friends for over thirty years, Jericho was only the second greatest wrestler from Winnipeg (Jericho looked like his dog died, as the crowd chanted ‘Kenny’) ‘and if I had a couple months to train… you’d be third’.  Jericho was furious at that last jab.

The House appeared on the big screen.  Both teams are equally deserving of being humiliated in their hometown.  ‘So, if you want these…’  the lights went out, the HOB appeared in the aisle, ‘come and get ‘em’.

Lights back out, House gone.  Three-way set for next week.

Should be a great match.  And should be a red-hot crowd assuming they’ve moved some ticks.

Callis’ mic-work made this, exceptional.

WINNER: JAS

Another of Tony Khan’s announcements.  He spoke for himself this time.

Orange Cassidy has demanded a title match vs Jarrett next week.  To support Shazam: Fury of the Gods, the title will be named (‘levelled up’) the AEW International Championship.

A video package blending the movie, Cassidy and Jarrett played.

All very lame.  But tbf, if the network asks, you don’t have much choice.  Now all I need to do is buy a network and I can get rid of Jarrett for good.

…..

A broken-sounding, tearful Bryan Danielson after Sunday’s match.  He’s thought his whole life that fighting is the answer.  But maybe Max was right.  Because at the end of the match he couldn’t feel his arms and his legs were a mess: he couldn’t play with his kids.  Realizing he hadn’t put them first made him even more ashamed than tapping out.

‘It’s time for me to go home’.

Crowd didn’t react much as we came back to the arena.

Jon Moxley & Claudio Castagnoli vs John Silver & Alex Reynolds

Backstory: The Moxley/Hangman feud has spun off into the BCC feuding with Page’s friends

Though they did to ‘Wild Thing’ as the BCC made their way through an almost totally blacked-out audience.

Hopefully, Claudio’s taking the brunt of this because Mox can’t be in good shape after Sunday.  The Dark Order had new music (I think?).

The BCC attacked immediately, leaving Reynolds outside as they worked over Silver in the ring.  Quick tags left Silver at a deficit, though he kept fighting back.  A bunch of attempted suplexes were blocked between he and Claudio until Silver won out.

A quick tag to Mox and a gator roll brought the BCC back on top as the quick tags continued with Castagnoli back in: bodyslam, leg drop, count of two.  Uppercuts and body shots in the corner maintained the assault until Claudio was dropped atop the buckle.

Reynolds in, running back elbow, discus to the back of the head, dive onto Mox outside, boot to Claudio’s jaw; Claudio elbowed his way free then drilled Reynolds off the top rope for a nasty spill to the outside.

The BCC must officially be heels.  Because that brought the break.

Claudio took a spill himself as we came back, Reynolds made the crawl but the Swiss raced back in to grab a headlock and block the tag.  A back body drop and double stomp finally allowed it, Mox in too as Silver went to work with stiff kicks in the corner but was drilled with a back elbow, came back with a pumpkick, knee to the back of the head, German, count of two.

Mox fired off kicks of his own, Silver caught the last and rained down blows, Mox hooked him into a triangle choke, Silver countered into a choke of his own, broken by Claudio.

A stiff uppercut and arrogant, heelish kicks from Claudio led to him being taken out via double-team pop-up uppercut, as Mox was worked over by the team’s usual combo until countering Reynolds’ cutter into an ‘anaconda variation’ (Taz) as the latter tapped.

Mox slapped the hold right back on as Excalibur admonished him and Claudio cut-off the ref.  Then gut-wrenched Silver over the top, Reynolds now inthe Bulldog Choke as Uno charged down to make the save.  But after a brief flurry was beaten down by Yuta.

Cue Hangman who limped his way down to check on his friends.  And received a three-on-one beatdown after popping Castagnoli.

Page and the others then had to be held back from going after the BCC as the crowd chanted ‘let them fight’.

Mox/Page probably should’ve finished at the ppv but some tags and trios can’t hurt.  Silver & Reynolds looked good as usual.

WINNER: Jon Moxley & Claudio Castagnoli

The Acclaimed with Renee.  They’re on their way back to the tag titles.  2.0 interrupted to say that the JAS too love the Acclaimed, who are ‘sports entertainers at heart’.  The ex-champs and Billy howled with laughter at the invite.  Then exited.

Wardlow vs Will Hobbs, TNT Title

Backstory: Hobbs won a shot last week in a ladder match, Wardlow won the belt Sunday

It’s a mistake booking this so quickly.  Could’ve really been something with the right build.  And actually the mini-story they did was good and could’ve been stretched out at least a couple weeks.

Wardlow’s music played as they cut backstage to the two already fighting in the parking lot.

Hobbs beat Wardlow into and around a car, including a suplex on the hood, just as the bell rang.  Hobbs channeled D-Lo Brown by taking a back drop onto the vehicle.

Ads.

Wouldn’t you know it, the two made it into the arena right as we returned.

A smattering of ‘powerhouse’ chants as Hobbs planted the champ with a spinebuster.  Wardlow popped right up as the two slugged it out, both dressed for a fight rather than a match.  An F-10 brought two as the crowd chanted for tables.

Turning the tables (that’s what you call a 5* transition), a second spinebuster, then a third brought a two count as Hobbs finally brought out the lumber.  Wardlow spat water at Hobbs, set him on the table at ringside then came off the top via senton, count of two in the aisle.

TiA chant as Wardlow landed a powerbomb on the ramp, the champ dropping and clutching his side afterward.  Then marching the challenger up the ramp, right in front of the announce desk, taking way too long as QT Marshall attacked with a chair.

The crowd completely died.

Excalibur noted Marshall had ‘QTV’ (has that been sufficiently explained?) on his shirt and mentioned something he’d apparently said to Hobbs in the past (definitely wasn’t sufficiently explained) as he helped Hobbs powerbomb/throw Wardlow off the ramp.  The ref began his ten count, Wardlow was unable to answer, new champ as Taz yelled excitedly that we ‘havent seen QT in forever’ (no-one noticed, promise).

Poor Wardlow.

Well, that sucked.  Went barely a few minutes either side of the break.

Marshall is very talented.  He can talk, he can work.  The problem is, no-one cares.  And haven’t been given reason too.  It often feels like AEW are stuck in their own bubble, not realizing how little connection there is between the fans and acts pushed into prominent roles such as the Gunns and QT.

It’s no coincidence this finish felt just like when the Gunns won their belts.

WINNER: Will Hobbs

Overall impressions

It’s kind of cliché in wrestling: send the fans home happy.  This doesn’t always have to mean the babyface wins but it certainly does mean don’t end on a flat note.

And this show did.  Undercutting a fairly entertaining two hours.

Dax Harwood says nothing has changed with AEW despite return

On his latest podcast, Dax Harwood claimed that their situation with AEW has not changed and urged fans to allow everything to play out because come April, everyone will understand what they are doing and where they’re going as a tag team.

Harwood said that the pros of staying in AEW are the schedule, the opportunity to do independent bookings, their relationship with NJPW, doing comic-cons, etc. The pros of going to WWE are that they could offer them a great deal money-wise and are on a creative high although he doesn’t feel like he would like the schedule.

He also described WWE as for the foreseeable future, “the number one money-making professional wrestling company in the world.”

Harwood explained that they got a call from Tony Khan a few days before Revolution to show up and he must have heard the podcast or read a report somewhere that their bodies are healed and ready to go and fulfill their obligations till the end of their deal.

Fallout from Revolution 2023 live tonight on Dynamite

The fallout from Revolution will take place tonight live on Dynamite on TBS.

Plus, following the grueling Texas death match, “Hangman” Adam Page will be in the house for an interview.

Dragon Lee finally arrives in NXT

It took a while but Dragon Lee has finally arrived in NXT. Lee appeared on NXT last night sitting with the fans and was introduced by the broadcast team.

The former AAA World Tag Team champion originally signed with the company back in December but there were some visa issues that needed to be sorted before he got his permit to work and live in the United States.

The 27-year-old Mexican broke the news of his WWE signing during the AAA Noche de Campeones event where after he and Dralistico dethroned FTR, they vacated the titles so Lee could move on to WWE.

Lee has wrestled all over the world including New Japan Pro Wrestling and Ring of Honor. He had one appearance for AEW where he teamed up with his brother Rush and Andrade El Idolo against The Elite.

Raw rating for 03/06/2023

Monday Night Raw drew somewhat of a disappointing rating for the return of John Cena with the show ding an average of 1,827,000 viewers, up 59,000 viewers from the prior week.

The show started with 1,885,000 viewers and then dipped slightly to 1,855,000 viewers, before ending with 1,741,000 viewers. Cena’s return was held off to the top of the third hour, which usually slumps in the numbers but this one obviously held up a lot better.

The show was #1, #2, and #3 in the 18-49 demo with 0.53, 0.53, and 0.50 ratings respectively for an average of 0.52, up 0.01 from the prior week. Raw was #1 on cable overall but was beat by The Bachelor, the season premiere of The Voice, and the season premiere of 911 in the demo on network TV. (Ratings credit: Showbuzzdaily.com)

Wardlow victim of car theft, TNT title and ring gear stolen

New TNT champion Wardlow was the victim of a car theft with someone breaking in in his rental car and stealing everything from it, including the TNT title.

In a video uploaded just after midnight, Wardlow “thanked” the person who stole “absolutely everything” including his ring gear, his boots, his TNT title, etc.

“My whole life were in those bags,” Wardlow said. “I don’t know if that means I’ll have to beat the shit out of Hobbs in these clothes I’m wearing right now, but one way or another I’m going to make it to Sacramento and we’re going to get this shit done.”

He addressed the thief, saying that if he caught him in the act, he would have shattered his jaw just like all the glass in his car is.

Wardlow will defend the TNT title tonight on Dynamite against Powerhouse Hobbs who last week won the Face of the Revolution ladder match.
