Betting on the underdog in wrestling? NOT as reckless as it sounds!

People love winners. It’s natural and in their DNA. Evolution and the survival of the fittest probably have something to do with it. Favorites dominate headlines, build fanbases, and attract the biggest bets. But that’s exactly what makes underdog betting interesting.

Wrestling, whether scripted like pro wrestling or results-driven like MMA-style matches, thrives on unpredictability. The storyline arcs, the surprise turns, or the carefully timed upsets may seem like bugs in the system, but are actually features.

And that’s where the real value lies. The thrill of betting on the wrestling underdog is about taking a shot in the dark, but also about spotting patterns others ignore.

The Underdog Play Is Both Romantic AND Strategic

Betting on the underdog is emotional. After all, so many Hollywood movies premise this type of plot.

People assume it’s fans backing their favorites or hopefuls chasing big odds. That happens, yes. But serious bettors look beyond the surface. They understand the dynamics of wrestling promotions and booking decisions.

In wrestling, storylines drive outcomes. If a heel (villain) has been dominating for weeks, the payoff might be a surprise loss at a pay-per-view event. If a mid-card wrestler suddenly gets more screen time, it could hint at a coming push. And this is where underdog odds get interesting.

Think of WrestleMania 30, when Daniel Bryan wasn’t supposed to win. Fans pushed back, the storyline changed, and Bryan became the face of a massive upset. Bettors who picked him walked away with a significant return.

Underdog bets offer:

  • Better odds for smaller wagers
  • More room for error due to public overbetting on favorites
  • A chance to profit from scripted unpredictability

The Psychology of Betting Markets

Odds aren’t just based on stats. They’re influenced by public perception. In wrestling, the “smart money” often flows in the final hours before a big event. That’s when oddsmakers adjust based on insider leaks or market shifts.

But even before those moves, there’s space to find value. Most bettors play it safe. They bet on stars with dominant win records or big storylines. That behavior skews the odds, creating value gaps on the other side.

Poker often has the same premise. Bluffing and betting against the grain pays off when done with purpose. Wrestling bettors who study patterns, not personalities, often find those blind spots others miss.

The Role of Tools and Platforms Like Betway

Finding the right bet is only part of the strategy. Having the right tool to place and manage that bet matters just as much. That’s where platforms like Betway come in.

In Ghana, for example, bettors can easily get started with the betway download option. The app allows users to place wrestling bets, track live odds shifts, and set betting limits. Accessibility is important, being able to react quickly when odds shift is critical, especially when underdog betting often relies on last-minute cues.

With in-app notifications, fast market updates, and clear stat displays, bettors who track wrestler momentum, storyline changes, and social buzz have an edge. This is crucial in wrestling, where shifts can be sudden, especially before main events or surprise stipulations.

Real-World Examples That Changed Payouts and the Math Behind

Real, tangible examples of when underdogs paid out big are what counts. Let’s take a look at some of the famous ones.

Kofi Kingston at WrestleMania 35 entered the scene last-minute due to a storyline reshuffle. Fan sentiment surged, and savvy bettors noticed. Odds improved only days before the event. Also, Brock Lesnar vs. Eddie Guerrero (No Way Out 2004) where Lesnar was heavily favored, but those watching Guerrero’s slow climb and backstage push saw the upset coming. The payout on Eddie was huge.

And these weren’t flukes, but narrative payoffs. Anyone watching closely enough could’ve seen the shift coming. Let’s do a quick math check. Say you bet $10 on five underdogs at +400 odds. You lose four, but one wins. That’s $40 profit from one win, minus $40 in losses. You break even. If two win, you’re up $40. That’s the math that underdog bettors live by.

It’s about winning just enough to make the odds work in your favor. Favorites don’t always win, especially not in wrestling. Promotions often sacrifice a big name to build another. That kind of booking logic breaks traditional sports patterns and opens doors for more creative betting.

Before backing the lesser-known name, check for signs of a push:

  • Increased promo time
  • Storyline attention (injury angles, contract talks)
  • Fan reactions online and in arenas
  • Sudden odds movement in the last 24 hours
  • Booking trends of that promotion (do they favor surprises?)

Again, wrestling isn’t like boxing or MMA. Here, the outcome is part of a larger story. That makes data secondary and narrative primary.

In Reckless Lies Peak Fun

There’s a reason sharp bettors don’t shy away from underdogs. The thrill here is about the cocktail of rebellion, hope, timing, understanding the entertainment machine, and using tools that provide up-to-date info, like the Betway download app.

The idioms “reading between the lines” and “thinking outside the box” come to mind. Where the general public sees a mismatch and chases stars, sharp bettors see setups and chase story arcs.

So no, betting on the underdog in wrestling isn’t as crazy as it may seem. In many cases, it’s the smartest bet on the card.

WWE Women’s World title match announced for Wrestlepalooza

A new WWE Women’s World champion will be crowned at the upcoming Wrestlepalooza premium live event on September 20.

Raw General Manager Adam Pearce announced during Raw that Stephanie Vaquer will be facing former champion Iyo Sky for the vacant title. Both women will be on Raw next week to sign the contract.

The title was relinquished by Naomi a few weeks ago after she made the announcement that she was pregnant. Naomi was supposed to face Vaquer at the Clash in Paris event but the replacement match was scrapped off the card and instead Becky Lynch defended the Women’s Intercontinental title against Nikki Bella.

Wrestlepalooza is the first WWE premium live event to stream on ESPN.

Logan Paul on John Cena: “He wrestles better than Pablo Picasso paints”

Logan Paul paid tribute to John Cena following their Clash in Paris match, calling Cena an “absolute mastermind of the craft.”

Paul said that he wanted a match with Cena to prove that he not only belongs in the business, but that he can bring the best out of the business.

“For me, last night was peak professional wrestling,” Paul wrote on X.

“Fair play to John, an absolute mastermind of the craft. He wrestles better than Pablo Picasso paints… idk if it’ll ever be understood how good he is,” he continued.

Paul added that although his hand was not raised in victory, he came away with more victories than he can count and he’s grateful for the opportunity to go toe-to-toe with another GOAT.

He also praised the French crowd which was rocking all night long.

“les fans français sont putain de fous,” he wrote, which translates to, “French fans are f*cking crazy.”

Raw moving to Netflix in France in January 2026

Raw

It was announced during Raw that starting from January 2026, Monday Night Raw in France will move to Netflix as well.

France is one of the few countries who still has no access to WWE content on Netflix due to a separate media rights agreement they have with AB1 and the WWE Network still exists for premium live events there.

Other countries who still don’t get WWE on Netflix are Belgium, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, Japan, South Korea, Philippines, Cambodia, and Sub-Saharan Africa.

Belgium fans also get their Raw, Smackdown, and NXT on the same AB1 network so it looks like they will move to Netflix in January as well.

A skinnier Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson at Venice Film Festival

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson made headlines after videos and photos of him at the Venice Film Festival show a major difference: a very noticeable drop in weight.

Johnson looks like he lost around 60lbs from his bulky frame, drawing comparisons to recent photos of Dave Bautista who also look way skinnier than his WWE days.

Speaking to Variety, Johnson said that he finally realized he was living other people’s dreams and not living his own dream when it comes to acting.

“A lot of times, it’s harder for us — or at least for me — to know what you’re capable of when you’ve been pigeonholed into something,” he said. “Sometimes it takes people that who you love and respect, like Emily and Benny, to say that you can.”

Johnson was referring to his Smashing Machine co-star Emily Blunt and director Benny Safdie. He is in Venice to promote the movie which comes out on October 3.

Indie wrestler Syko Stu released from hospital following Raja Jackson assault

Syko Stu, the indie wrestler with KnokX Pro who was assaulted by Raja Jackson, has been released from hospital and is now recovering at home.

A post on his social media from his wife, Contessa Patterson, said that Stu, real name Stuart Smith, suffered trauma to both the upper and lower jaws, a laceration to his upper lip, and a fracture to the maxilla bone, which resulted in the loss of several teeth.

“He has a long road of recovery ahead, but he remains in good spirits despite everything he has been through,” she wrote. “We are deeply grateful for all the love and support we’ve received during this time. Thank you to everyone who has contributed in any way-whether through monetary donations, food, flowers, or gifts. Your kindness means more than words can express.”

Stu is a military vet who uses the escape of professional wrestling to deal with PTSD.

The LAPD is still investigating the case which saw Raja Jackson, the son of Quinton “Rampage” Jackson unleash a ground and pound assault of 22 shots to the head and face after Stu was already knocked out.

A GoFundMe campaign to cover medical bills and other stuff has reached over $217,000 with several wrestlers such as Chris Jericho, Nic Nemeth, Finn Balor, Jack Perry, and others all donating large sums of money. YouTuber Mr. Beast also donated the sum of $10,000.

Clash in Paris smashes gate record at La Defense Arena previously held by Taylor Swift

Clash in Paris

The Clash in Paris premium live event shattered the gate record at the La Defense Arena which was previously held by a Taylor Swift concert in 2024.

The event had some insane prices when tickets went out, on the level of a WrestleMania, although they did go down in price during the last two weeks of the show.

During the show, WWE French announcer Philippe Chereau announced that the attendance for the night was 30,343, one of WWE’s largest attendance in Europe. La Defense Arena is Europe’s largest indoor arena.

Roman Reigns stretchered out at Clash in Paris, written off TV for next few months

Roman Reigns was written off television for the next couple of months after a long beat down by Bron Breakker and Bronson Reed after he defeated Reed in the opening match of Clash in Paris.

With Reigns celebrating on the announce table that he got his shoes back and choked out his former Wiseman too, Bron Breakker appeared out of nowhere and speared Reigns.

Breakker speared Reigns again in spectacular fashion as the OTC was walking to the back and then Reed hit multiple Tsunamis on him. Jey Uso came out for the save, but got a spear for his trouble.

Reigns was also on the receiving end of a Tsunami while he was strapped to a backboard as EMTs were going to put him on a stretcher.

The Tribal Chief eventually did the stretcher job and was wheeled out of the arena.

Reigns will be doing his filming for the Street Fighter movie in Queensland, Australia next. He is expected to return for Survivor Series.

Raw to start at 2PM ET on Netflix live from Paris, France

Raw

WWE Raw will be live on Netflix worldwide starting at 2PM ET today as the show will take place from La Defense Arena in Paris, France, the same site of last night’s Clash in Paris.

For those in Europe, that means an 8PM Central European Time start or 7PM if you are in the United Kingdom.

Three matches have been announced for tonight’s broadcast, including French favorite AJ Styles going for the WWE Intercontinental title against champ Dominik Mysterio, Asuka and Kairi Sane team up to take on Roxanne Perez and Raquel Rodriguez, and The New Day and Grayson Waller vs War Raiders and Penta in a six-man tag team match.

Plus, more news will be given on the vacant WWE Women’s World title and an update will be shared on Roman Reigns.

John Cena pays homage to previous opponents during match against Logan Paul

John Cena used popular moves from several former opponents during his match against Logan Paul yesterday and during the post-show, Cena said that he’s doing this to pay tribute to those who played a part in his career but unable to wrestle again in the short amount of time he has left.

Cena used the Zig Zag, performed by Nic Nemeth, the Styles Clash from AJ Styles, and Angel’s Wings from Christopher Daniels during the match.

“I will say that I’ve had a lot of opponents over the years and with eight appearances left, I know I’m not gonna be able to wrestle everybody who was influential in my career,” Cena told the post-show panel.

“But I think you saw tonight, the best way I can say thank you to some of those people who affected my career is kinda pay homage by maybe taking some risks and doing some stuff that I don’t normally do out there,” he continued.

Cena did give a shout out to AJ Styles as well but did not mention Nemeth or Daniels by name during the interview.

Clash post-show panel discusses potential of AJ Lee returning to WWE

With Becky Lynch helping Seth Rollins retain his WWE World Heavyweight title at Clash in Paris yesterday thanks to a low-blow to CM Punk, the topic of Punk’s wife, AJ Lee, was discussed.

During the post show, Punk was seen acknowledging and even holding a fan-made sign that said, “CM Punk, bring back AJ Lee.”

AJ Lee’s name was also brought up by the post-show panel, with Big E saying that Punk also has a wife and Jackie Redmond wondering if this will open the door for Lee to return.

Rumors of AJ Lee’s return have surfaced many times before but WWE always stayed away from entertaining mentioning her on television until last night.

Lee has not wrestled since 2015.

Becky Lynch helps Seth Rollins retain WWE World Heavyweight title in Paris

With Bron Breakker and Bronson Reed ejected from the building and Paul Heyman injured, Seth Rollins entered the Clash in Paris main event solo, but The Visionary had an other ace up his sleeve: his wife.

In the closing moments of the show and with Rollins seemingly on the verge of losing his title to CM Punk, a masked individual entered the ring and low-blowed Punk before he delivered another GTS.

With anticipation building, the individual removed the mask to reveal herself to be Women’s Intercontinental champion Becky Lynch. Her ball-busting contribution led to Rollins to hit the stomp on Punk and pin him, retaining the title.

The husband-and-wife team then celebrated together in the ring, holding up the title, and even sharing a passionate kiss.

“We run this business,” Lynch then posted on X, along with a photo with Rollins and the #TheVision hashtag, all but confirming that Lynch has joined the faction.

WWE Clash in Paris pick’em report

Clash in Paris

Bonjour, my friends! It’s @TheMagnumDA with another edition of the Pick’em report. This time, we are back in Paris for The Clash! The King of the Summer Pick’ems (yours truly) will be defending the WOPC Championship against our very own Colin Vassallo.

We’re aware of the MINOR possibility of Drew McIntyre vs. Randy Orton being added to the Clash card, but as of right now, that has not been officially announced. So for now, we’re going to do this Pick’em with Confidence Pool rules – 6 points for the match you feel most confident about, and 1 point for the pick you feel least confident about.

With that in mind, let’s get this party started!

ON WITH THE PICKS!!!

Good Ol’ Fashioned Donnybrook – No DQ Match
Sheamus vs. Rusev

Colin: Rusev hasn’t really done much since he switched from AEW and it’s a waste. He went from not being used to barely being used. I’m glad with both being from this side of the world, they both get to perform in front of European fans. I’m rooting for Rusev to win, but I think Sheamus is going to get the W here. (1 point)

Magnum: Pun definitely intended…this will be a banger. This has been a fantastic, wild feud that has produced numerous brawls and angles on Raw. In the end, this is about putting Rusev on the map, and anything other than a victory would be a complete disservice to bringing him back. I expect this one to be their best effort, and I also expect Rusev to get the duke. (5 points)

Roman Reigns vs. Bronson Reed (with Paul Heyman)

Colin: If there’s ever a six points to assign in a confidence pool, well, this would be it. And in favor of Bronson Reed. Kidding. I have a feeling Reigns was added because Cody is not there otherwise, our Tribal Chief would not be anywhere close to Paris tonight. With that said, the OTC needs his shoes back from the Tribal Thief, and he’ll get them tonight. Reigns wins. (6 points)

Magnum: If I’m Bronson Reed, I have to be over the moon with this match. To share the ring with the OTC in a 1-on-1…it’s gotta be beyond his wildest dreams. Couldn’t be happier for The Tribal Thief. Now, do I think he’s going to pull off one of the biggest upsets of all time? Not quite. Roman‘s going to win, but Reed will likely drop a Tsunami or two on Reigns after the match…and that’s just as effective as any win. (6 points)

WWE Intercontinental Championship
Becky Lynch (c) vs. Nikki Bella

Colin: This should have been Stephanie Vaquer vs whoever her opponent might have been for the WWE Women’s World title. There was no reason why they shouldn’t have put that match on tonight. It would have made a great visual to crown a new champion in front of 30K. But whatever. Listen, I don’t mind Nikki at all. I like her. I’m not on the Bella Hate Bandwagon. But she ain’t getting that title. The only title she might win is if her sister returns and they go for the tag team gold. But yeah, Becky wins. (4 points)

Magnum: I’m not a fan of what Becky said about Ozzy Osbourne or the town of Birmingham…but in general, people don’t respect the dead like they used to. I mean, look at those AI videos Rod Stewart made…not to mention, they still continue to run Real American Beer commercials featuring Hulk Hogan, but I digress. As for the match, Becky Hogan…err…Lynch is going to retain here. Bella’s comeback hasn’t caught fire the way she wanted it to, and she’s in political limbo for continuing to bring up her Sister (who is persona non grata). I don’t think this comeback is going to last – Big Time Becks wins it. (3 points)

WWE Tag Team Championship Match
The Wyatt Sicks (Gacy & Lumis) vs. The Street Profits

Colin: The entrance for The Wyatt Sicks should be great. Fireflies and all that. The Smackdown Tag Team division is stacked and I don’t want to see The Street Profits champs again for now. I’ll put my money (points, in this case) on the Wyatts. (2 points)

Magnum: I would not be surprised if this was the match that brought about a huge upset. Losing this match would be the catalyst for the Wyatts’ heel turn. I’ll go ahead and put a point on The Street Profits to get the win. (1 point)

John Cena vs. Logan Paul

Colin: Can’t believe Cena is wrestling Paul on his retirement tour. That was not on my bingo card. Paul really brought it this past week with his promo and he was excellent interacting with the fans’ chants. And he speaks French, too! Qui l’aurait cru? I don’t see Cena losing here, and he’s going to give Paul another lesson tonight! Cena wins! (5 points)

Magnum: Great mic work by Cena leading up to this match – he’s saying everything that everybody thinks about Paul, really sticking it to him in ways that others haven’t. Meanwhile, Paul has responded by knocking Cena out with a suckerpunch. He’s really rewriting the book on being the heel, no? Lol, anyways…Cena’s going to drop this fool, and it’s going to be sweet. Cena wins. (2 points)

Fatal 4 Way – World Heavyweight Championship
Seth Rollins (c) vs. CM Punk vs. Jey Uso vs. LA Knight

Colin: These four can’t seem to get away from each other. The biggest question is, who takes the fall? *cough* LA Knight *cough* Looking forward to this though and I’m sure it will be one hell of a match with a lot of near falls. No new champion though, I’m afraid. I can still picture Rollins vs Punk as WrestleMania 42 main event. Rollins retains. (3 points)

Magnum: I liked how this was put together – Punk tried to align himself with the other babyfaces, but they didn’t want anything to do with him. Very smart on the part of Knight and Uso, but I think this will be put to another test on Sunday. These guys will likely find ways to work with each other to take down Rollins, but eventually there will be a mishap where Rollins will take advantage – Seth wins and retains. (4 points)

Alright fans, that’s going to do it for us here at the Pick’em report. We will be back in just three weeks for WRESTLEPALOOZA!! Thank you for checking us out – we’ll see you next time! @TheMagnumDA signing off.

Fans mob Rhea Ripley in Paris as she tries to catch Uber ride

Rhea Ripley was mobbed by a bunch of fans in Paris as she was trying to catch an Uber ride, with some fans even blocking the car door to try and get a selfie with the former champion.

In a post on X, Ripley reminded fans that all WWE Superstars are people too.

“Do not swarm me or anyone like a pack of rabid zombies,” she wrote. “No one should ever be pushed up against a uber drivers door and completely mobbed like I just experienced. Use common courtesy and humanity. No means no. Wtf.”

A video posted by the @CatchNewz X account showed the incident, with Rhea, wearing baggy clothing and a hat to try and somewhat conceal her identity, looking for her Uber driver. But before she could make it to the car, fans quickly stormed in with their phones and as soon as others realized who it was, they joined in as well, making it impossible for her to enter the car.

Peacock to stream the last WWE main roster premium live event today

Today marks the last time a main roster WWE premium live event will air on Peacock, with Clash in Paris closing an almost five-year chapter for WWE on the Comcast-owned streaming service.

The plug is being pulled seven months prior to the original expiry date of March 2026 after WWE fulfilled its contractual obligations in terms of number of premium live events it was supposed to produce for Peacock. WWE PLEs will now move to ESPN starting with the September 20 event, Wrestlepalooza.

WWE and NBCUniversal Television and Streaming announced a five-year, near $1 billion dollar deal back on January 25, 2021 with the broadcaster acquiring the exclusive U.S. distribution rights to what was known as the WWE Network at the time. Fastlane was the first WWE show to air on the streaming service.

Peacock will, for now, still have the rights for the WWE Network video library until the end of this year and will continue to stream NXT premium live events until March 2026. All future Saturday Night’s Main Event shows will also continue streaming exclusively on Peacock.

Pat McAfee cast in the Netflix movie The Mosquito Bowl

On-and-off WWE commentator Pat McAfee has been cast in the upcoming movie The Mosquito Bowl, currently filming in Queensland, Australia and directed by Peter Burg. The movie will be exclusively on Netflix.

The news was announced on Netflix’s Tudum.

Joining the cast in the supporting role of a US Marine drill instructor is American sports analyst and host Pat McAfee,” the news entry about the movie said.

The Mosquito Bowl is based on the true story of four top American college football stars who set their fame aside to enlist in the Marines following the attack on Pearl Harbor.

“As they prepare for the brutal invasion of Okinawa, they participate in a legendary game featuring some of the greatest players in history — a game that, for many, will be their last,” the Tudum entry says.

The movie features Nicholas Galitzine, Bill Skarsgård, Ray Nicholson, and Tom Francis in the leading roles.

McAfee will return to WWE at the Wrestlepalooza premium live event on September 20.
