Cena vs Theory U.S. title match to kickoff WrestleMania 39 night one

Last time WrestleMania was in Los Angeles, John Cena co-headlined the show against JBL for the WWE title. This time around, it will be John Cena who will open the show of shows on Saturday, April 1.

WWE announced that Austin Theory vs John Cena will be the first match of night one of WrestleMania. While in the past being the “curtain jerker” was seen as a downer, nowadays, being the first match on a show like WrestleMania is a big responsibility as you set the tone for the rest of the show and get the crowd going.

You have to go back to WrestleMania XX in New York in 2004 to find a John Cena match as the first match on the card. That night, John Cena defeated The Big Show to win, yep, you guessed it, the United States title.
