While in the past being the “curtain jerker” was seen as a downer, nowadays, being the first match on a show like WrestleMania is a big responsibility as you set the tone for the rest of the show and get the crowd going.
You have to go back to WrestleMania XX in New York in 2004 to find a John Cena match as the first match on the card. That night, John Cena defeated The Big Show to win, yep, you guessed it, the United States title.
