5 most thrilling WWE matches of all time

Nobody does build-up, drama, action, or storytelling like the WWE. In fact, many film and television writers could learn a lot from wrestling booking.

The writing is so good that viewers are never able to predict what is going to happen next or who will win a fight. In many ways, it can be more unpredictable than real sports – you can find the best sports betting lines here.

The WWE has had so many incredible storylines since it was founded in 1980 that it is hard to narrow down our favorite moments. But, we are going to try to do that today.

Many of our favorite moments have come from recent years, however, there are so many matches that we will never forget. They have stood the test of time. Some of these newer matches have become instant classics.

#5 – John Cena VS Bray Wyatt (Wrestlemania 36)

The WWE has never been one to let the world get in the way of the stories it wants to tell and their Cena vs The Fiend storyline was no different.

Many were wondering if Wrestlemania 36 was even going to be able to take place. But, the WWE took the opportunity to take their storytelling into a whole different dimension. And John Cena’s journey through the fun house will be talked about for decades to come.

The majority of this match was shown through pre-recorded video and at points was honestly terrifying.

In this match, the WWE actually admitted to some of the mistakes they had made along the way, particularly with Cena’s character and how that had impacted the wrestling scene as a whole.

#4 – Sasha Banks vs. Bianca Belair (Wrestlemania 37)

This was undoubtedly the best match we have ever seen in women’s wrestling and one of the best matches in the history of the WWE.

Banks and Belair made history by fighting in the first all-African-American headline act for women. You couldn’t take your eyes off them.

These two didn’t have the same kind of reputation as Charlotte Flair or Becky Lynch going into this match. But they sure did by the time it was over.

After a year of having no audiences at WWE matches, the crowd could not get enough of this might battle.

#3 – The Undertaker vs. Shawn Michaels (Wrestlemania 25)

The WWE has used the Undertaker as their company’s boogie man for over 30 years now, and he is still as good as he’s ever been.

However, this fight against Shawn Michaels might be the best match he has ever fought.

Everyone knew from the start that this was going to be something special. The two had history, they were two of the biggest wrestlers in the world at the time, and they would be fighting it out on the biggest stage – Wrestlemania.

The match was billed as heaven vs hell as the Undertaker returned to the ring to take on wrestling’s golden boy. We won’t tell you what happened, you’ll want to watch this yourself.

#2 – Hardy Boyz vs. Dudley Boyz vs. Edge & Christian (WrestleMania 17)

Watching this match back, you might be wondering how it earned its place on this list. You might need a little context if you’re a younger fan.

This is a match that took place while the WWE was ramping up its domination over the world of wrestling and its production value.

This tables, ladders, and chairs match was one of the first elaborate routines that the company put on and it sent people wild. It was helped by amazing performances from all the men involved.

This was a match that sent all of their careers into the stratosphere.

#1 – Bret Hart vs. “Stone Cold” Steve Austin (Wrestlemania 13)

Finally, we have reached the most thrilling WWE match of all time.

This match started one of the most iconic grudges in the history of the WWE. It set Austin up as the heel who would do everything they could to stop people from naming Hart “The Best There Is, The Best There Was, and The Best There Ever Will Be.”

Both men put in the best performances of their careers up to that point. But that isn’t why we all remember this match. It’s that perfectly executed double turn that makes this the most dramatic and thrilling match in the history of the WWE.

We will never get bored of watching it.

Ripley out of Money In The Bank, Carmella replaces her

The number one contender for the Raw Women’s title, Rhea Ripley, is unable to compete at the Money In The Bank premium live event and has been taken off the card.

Ripley, who last wrestled on the June 6 episode of Monday Night Raw, was replaced by Carmella, who last night won a five-way match against Asuka, Becky Lynch, Liv Morgan, and Alexa Bliss to earn her shot.

It’s not known what kind of injury Ripley is suffering from but with MITB still two weeks away, it’s not going to be a quick recovery.

Carmella was last going to get a title shot at SummerSlam last year in Las Vegas when she showed up as a late replacement of Sasha Banks against Bianca Belair. But her spot was taken by the returning Becky Lynch, who beat Belair in 26 seconds.

John Laurinaitis placed on admin leave, Prichard takes over

WWE logo

John Laurinaitis has been placed on administrative leave according to PWInsider.com and Bruce Prichard has been named interim Head of Talent Relations.

The news was given to WWE personnel yesterday at Raw and Laurinaitis was not present for the show.

Laurinaitis features in the current WWE Board of Directors investigation of Vince McMahon’s $3 million payout to a former employee. The investigation uncovered that after the unnamed employee was given a raise by McMahon she was handed to Laurinaitis “like a toy” and moved to his Talent Relations department where she was his assistant.

The man formerly known as Johnny Ace will not be returning until the investigation is complete and also depending on the findings of the Board.

McMahon temporarily stepped down from his role as WWE Chairman and CEO but has retained his creative duties.

Vince McMahon, Oliver Luck settle XFL lawsuit days before hitting trial

Vince McMahon and former XFL Commissioner Oliver Luck have reached a settlement in their lawsuit according to the Sports Business Journal, days after the two failed mediation and the case was headed to trial on July 11.

Luck was seeking $24 million in compensation from Alpha Entertainment LLC, the parent company of the XFL, for wrongful termination. McMahon countersued saying that Luck was fired for leaking confidential information, using his phone for personal use, and abandoning ship when COVID-19 hit, among others.

The settlement terms are unknown but Luck’s attorney filed a motion to get the records permanently sealed.

“The parties reached an agreement to resolve this case on June 16, 2022,” attorney Paul Dobrowski wrote. McMahon’s lawyer, Jerry McDevitt, did not oppose the motion.

The XFL eventually folded and declared bankrupt with Dwayne Johnson and his team purchasing it out of bankruptcy court.

McMahon is now facing an even bigger battle as he is under investigation for a $3 million payout in hush money. Last week, McMahon voluntarily stepped down from Chairman and CEO of WWE pending the outcome of the investigation. His daughter, Stephanie, has been named interim Chairwoman and CEO.

Tammy Sytch’s attorney files motion to drop her as client

PWInsider.com is reporting that Steven deLaroche, the attorney who is representing Tammy “Sunny” Sytch in her criminal case, has filed a motion in court asking to drop her as a client.

deLaroche, a former Chief County Judge and Assistant State’s Attorney, wrote in his motion that it is “impossible for the client and attorney to continue to work cooperatively on the case” after an impasse was reached. Apart from that, Sytch has also not complied with the terms of the employment agreement, meaning that she is not paying for his services despite agreeing to previous terms.

It is now up to the court to approve, or deny, the attorney’s request.

Sytch, who is back in jail after a judge revoked her bail in mid-May, was involved in a fatal car crash that resulted in the death of a 75-year-old man back in April. She was charged with one count of DUI causing death, one count of causing death while operating a vehicle with a suspended or revoked driver’s license, four counts of DUI causing injury to a person, and three counts of DUI causing damage to property.

Vince McMahon and the WWE

Vince McMahon is often described as a self-made billionaire. He was not always the legendary “Mr McMahon” the evil CEO of WWE that plays with the fate of his wrestlers. McMahon has built an empire based on sports entertainment, where using your bet 10 get 30 free bet sign-up offers, could get you a handsome return on a match.

Early Years

On 24 August 1945, Vincent Kenedy McMahon was born in Pinehurst, North Carolina to his mother Victoria and father Vincent James McMahon. While Vince McMahon was still an infant his father left the family and took his older brother with him. Vince’s childhood was spent growing up with his mother. Vince and his mother were often the victims of abuse.

Vince only met his father for the first time at age 12, who was at that time working for the Capitol Wrestling Corporation as a promotor. This sparked the flame of interest in Vince to explore the wrestling world.

In 1968, Vince McMahon graduated with a business degree at the University of East Carolina and joined the CWC, owned by his father, as a promotor after a short stint as a travelling salesman. During the 70s Mcmahon became an integral part of his father’s company and became the driving force in renaming this to the World Wrestling Federation. In 1982, Vince McMahon took over the CWC from his sickly father who later passed away in 1984.

The Rise To Greatness

When Vince McMahon, bought the WWF, wrestling and their promotors had an understanding that each promotor kept to their respective territories. However, McMahon has a different dream for his company and began to promote his company in territories outside of his own and acquired wrestlers from other companies.

In 1984, McMahon signed Hulk Hogan as the frontman for his new dream and together they reached audiences that had never before shown an interest in wrestling, with shows such as Wrestlemania drawing in huge crowds.

After struggling against the WCW in the 1990s, used a new brand strategy to pull the WWF to prominence by focusing on a more adult-orientated audience. McMahon downplayed his role to merely that of a commentator but was then ousted and soon started playing a role as the villainous Mr McMahon, who started a feud with Stone Cold Steve Austin, rocketing the WWF back into popular culture.

McMahon continued his rating war with WCW and in 2001 finally acquired control of the company, soon after Extreme Championship Wrestling filed for bankruptcy and McMahon and the WWF were left as the only major wrestling promotor.

In 2002 the WWF had to change their name to WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment) after having lost a court case against the World Wildlife Fund over the use of the WWF trademark. Soon after this rebrand, the WWE moved to the “Ruthless Aggression Area” with high levels of violence, profanity and sex. This era held sway until 2008 when the WWE moved to a more TV-PG-friendly rating where they could “give the audience what they want in a far more sophisticated way”. This move allowed the WW to acquire more sponsorship due to the wider appeal to audiences.

McMahon and Controversy

As with most celebrities, McMahon has had his share of controversy, which almost earned him an eight-year stint in jail.  In 1993 he was accused of acquiring and supplying steroids for his wrestlers via a Dr. George Zahorian from Pennsylvania. Some of the high-profile wrestlers featured names such as Holk Hogan, The Ultimate Warrior and even Vince himself.

The trial received national attention with Hulk Hogan called on to testify. However, the case was hampered by procedural errors and all but one was thrown out. The star witness Kevin “Nailz” Wacholz was revealed to have a personal vendetta against Vince McMahon and the case was finally dismissed and McMahon acquitted.

McMahon’s Legacy

Vince McMahon is undoubtedly the most influential person in shaping professional wrestling into the monster that it has become. He was a pioneer in reality television, making himself the central character in the WWE by playing the “heel”. McMahon is often described as a pioneer and visionary when it comes to the marketing and storytelling of wrestling, being instrumental in bringing wrestling to women and children by listening to his audience.

Although McMahon has his detractors, many sing his praises. McMahon has been described as a caring father figure, giving many talented people a break that has propelled their careers to unforeseen heights such as Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.

No matter your impression of Vince McMahon, there can be no argument that he has left a lasting impression on sports entertainment.

Target Center announces The Quake By The Lake Dynamite for August

The Target Center in Minneapolis announced that AEW will be returning with Dynamite and Rampage tapings for The Quake By The Lake themed episodes on Wednesday, August 10.

While AEW ran the location for Rampage and Full Gear in November 2021, this will be the first time that Dynamite will be held at the location. The arena noted that this will be AEW’s only Minnesota event of 2022.

Tickets go on sale on Friday, June 24 at 10AM CT on AXS.COM with tickets starting at $29 plus fees.

Ric Flair’s Last Match event moving to a bigger arena in Nashville

The Jim Crockett Promotions Presents: Ric Flair’s Last Match event is moving from the original venue of the Nashville Fairgrounds to the Nashville Municipal Auditorium, a near 10,000-seater arena.

The news was originally reported by Justin Barrasso of Sports Illustrated.

Ric Flair’s Last Match is set to take place on Sunday, July 31 and while no card has been announced yet, the interest for the event forced event organizers to seek a larger venue. The show is being promoted by Starrcast, Thuzio, and airing on FITE.TV.

Tickets purchased for the original Fairgrounds event will be honored in the same location at the new arena.

The Nashville Municipal Auditorium is certainly not new to professional wrestling as it has hosted many NWA, WCW, WWE, ROH, and TNA shows in the past.

Bound For Glory 2022 announced for October

During last night’s Slammiversary, the promotion announced that Bound For Glory 2022 will take place in October, but the date remains somewhat of a mystery for now. No location has been revealed.

While on commentary, Tom Hannifan revealed October 8 as the date for the show but video graphic promoting BFG just said October 2022. It’s highly unlikely that the show will have the October 8 date as WWE has Extreme Rules already booked for the same date and the chances of both promotions going head-to-head on PPV is unlikely. Last year, the show ran along a Saturday night episode of AEW Dynamite on TNT.

This year’s Bound For Glory is the 17th annual and it’s typically considered the most important PPV of the company.

Will Tyson Fury take on The Rock?

If you are a fan of wrestling or a fan of boxing then you might have quite the treat in store. Tyson Fury has shown an interest in going head to head with the WWE legend that is Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson. This would certainly get the fingers itching of global betting fans, who would no doubt look for the best casinos online and sports betting sites to place a bet on the outcome. Two heavyweights, both legends in their own sports, facing off would create quite the commotion.

A Fighting Comeback

Tyson Fury has announced that he is no longer interested in continuing his successful boxing career after he beat Dillian Whyte by TKO in November 2021. Should he stay true to his word, then he will be ending his fighting life with a record of 32-0-1.

However, while it may be the case that he won’t step back into the square circle as a professional boxer, he has already been able to witness the steps taken by boxers such as Floyd Mayweather, who has taken part in exhibition fights, which are certainly worth a pretty decent payday. Why would he not be interested in taking part in this type of event?

When being interviewed recently, Tyson Fury discussed possible future plans and threw a few names into the ring, quite literally, with the name Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson being brought up.

However, he was quick to confirm that nothing has yet happened. He wants to spend some time taking parts in bouts that are ‘not real’ and that are there purely to entertain his fans. These are for fun only, nothing more or less than that. The main thing is that an exhibition match isn’t as competitive. It’s not as important whether you win or lose. The fighters and the fans are simply in it to have a good time and to put on a show.

However, it isn’t only The Rock who interests Fury. He has also brought up the possibility of fighting other old-time boxers such as Frank Bruno, Lennox Lewis and even maybe his namesake, Mike Tyson. However, The Rock is certainly at the top of the list. So, you never know what to expect, but he’s certainly got something exciting up his sleeve.

Will it happen? Who knows, the Rock hasn’t piped up on the idea just yet, but it’s not completely out of the picture

Good Friends

These two have a history – and a good-natured one at that, so anything could be decided down the pub over a pint. Indeed, WWE legend, Dwayne Johnson has described Tyson Fury as a good buddy – and has gone so far as to call him ‘possibly the greatest of all time’.

Initially, Tyson Fury shared a clip and it went on The Rock’s Instagram, where he revealed their shared love of one of the biggest boxing legends ever, Muhammed Ali. Dwayne Johnson, who is now coming up to 50 years old said “A good buddy of mine, I just saw his post, a good buddy of mine, who many of you know, if not all of you, Tyson Fury, the heavyweight champion of the world. He will go down as one of the greatest of all time, possibly the greatest of all time, he’s in that conversation”. Why would The Rock not want to try his luck against one of the best of all time?

They first started their friendship back in 2019 when Fury, 33 went on holiday with his family to America. He then debuted in the WWE by beating Braun Strowman at the Crown Jewel Pay-Per-Head event. He has since flirted with a return to wrestling even more recently with his online feud with Drew McIntyre, the Scottish former WWE champion.

Body Envy

Tyson Fury has famously battled with his weight – and won. However, one of the things that has most impressed Fury about The Rock is his incredible physique, despite being almost half a century old. The wrestler has been one of the few that has successfully made the transition to Hollywood’s singer screen and is now one of the highest-paid action stars in the US.

He regularly posts on Social Media and one of his topless photos certainly caught Fury’s attention. He shared that picture, quipping “What a shape on a man especially for his age. Respect. Ripped”. Johnson is known for regularly sharing workout videos online and has amassed 200 million followers.

Although he is getting older, he still maintains a rigorous schedule and describes himself as ‘the hardest worker in the room’.  He is looking to star in the biopic about Mark Kerr, the pro-wrestler turned MMA and UFC fighter.

Whether or not this will ever come about, we don’t know. But these are two of the greatest in their respective fields and they are good friends. Seeing the two go head to head would certainly attract attention from across the globe – so let’s hope Dwayne Johnson climbs on board and doesn’t rock the boat!

Familiar faces make surprise appearances at Slammiversary

Several familiar faces showed up on the 20th anniversary of Impact Wrestling last night at Slammiversary, either in person or via video.

AJ Styles, Kurt Angle, and Sting all sent in video messages because they couldn’t be there live in person.

Former WWE champion AJ Styles did a two-minute video, mentioning the company’s first match he was involved in and the feuds he had. Styles said he would still be AJ Styles but how phenomenal would he be without Impact Wrestling? He thanked the fans, and thanked WWE for allowing him to do this because they know it is a special moment for him.

Kurt Angle said that TNA gave him an opportunity when he needed it and he’s very grateful. He mentioned some of the memorable feuds he had over the years in TNA and thanked the fans for their support.

Sting said that TNA was an outlet for him to get back in the industry and mentioned that he had great memories in the company, saying that people still mention his time in TNA when he meet them in airports.

Former TNA President Dixie Carter appeared at the top of the stage for a short speech and then introduced the returning Davey Richards as the final member of the Impact Originals team. Traci Brooks and D’Lo Brown both appeared during the match and just days after the death of his brother, Earl Hebner was there as well to make the pinfall and give the Impact team the victory. Brian Hebner was also part of the match.

Chris Harris and James Storm, known as America’s Most Wanted, also appeared after the Impact Tag Team title match and with beers in hand, they saluted Impact and its tag team division.

Christy Hemme also returned and introduced Scott D’Amore who came out with a Team Canada jersey. D’Amore is now an EVP with Impact Wrestling.

You can see the highlights of this special night below.

Wrestlers mourn the loss of their friend Tim White

For a second time in the same weekend, the wrestling world was in mourning, this time remembering another legendary WWE referee, Tim White.

White, who served as a referee until 2002 when he tore his shoulder during a Hell In A Cell match between Triple H and Chris Jericho, was a favorite to many and got his fair share of bumps along the years. He also accompanied many WWE Superstars to appearances throughout the years.

“WWE is saddened to learn that long-time referee Tim White has passed away and extends its condolences to White’s family, friends and fans,” said a statement by WWE.

Shawn Michaels, who had many matches refereed by White, also reflected on the death of Dave Hebner. “Saddened to hear about both Dave Hebner and Tim White. Both incredible men I was privileged to spend time with in and out of the ring. My thoughts are with their families,” HBK wrote.

Ric Flair also remembered both referees in a tweet he sent out today. “I’m saddened to hear about the passing of two of my friends – Dave Hebner & Tim White. I’m grateful to have known both of these incredible men. Rest in peace!”

Fellow former WWE referee Jimmy Korderas, who worked with White for several years wrote, “Another big brother is no longer with us. Rest in Power my dear friend Tim White.”

Former WWE champion Big E wrote that he lit up every time he saw Tim White, a man who was often tasked with shepherding them at appearances and conventions the last several years. “He was always extraordinarily kind and warm. I will miss you, my friend. My deepest condolences to his family and friends,” Big E said.

NXT commentator Wade Barrett wrote, “Sad to hear the news about Tim White. He was a total gent and a great laugh to hang out with. I knew I was guaranteed a fun day whenever he’d escort me on any WWE appearances.”

Dolph Ziggler added, “Tim White brightened every room he walked into & the WWE locker room was especially lucky to have him. Being around Timmy on several PR tours was a joy! We would get our work done & meet after and he would tell old road stories & we’d laugh til the sun came up. Cheers, sir.”

Posting photos of the two together from his own home bar and gym, Sheamus wrote, “I’m absolutely gutted. Timmy, thank you for the laughs, your advice, amazing stories and great times. I love ya fella.”

Shelton Benjamin also worked with White throughout his WWE career and said that we lost a great guy. “Tim always made me feel like much welcomed family. My condolences to the White family.”

Former WCW President Eric Bischoff said he always looked forward to seeing Tim. “Last time was around Christmas. As always, Tim as as warm, genuine, and full of life as usual. I’ll miss hearing your stories. See ya down the road.”

John “Bradshaw” Layfield described White as one of the best guys he’s ever known. “He and Arnie were the epitome of old school cool. Ron and I tore up his bar a few times….and we had more nights together in more countries than I can count having a great time. Rest easy Legend. Love you,” JBL wrote.

Paige said White had a heart of gold and was always the nicest person in any room he was in. “I’ll miss his Andre the Giant stories and hugs. Lucky to have known such a great human. RIP Tim,” Paige said.

“The World’s loss. The World is a less better place without Tim White,” continued Sean Waltman.

Adam Scherr, known as Braun Strowman in WWE, added, “The world lost an amazing human. Tim was one of a kind. He was always in charge of handling me when I was with WWE. I was so honored to have him at my side like Andre did. You will be so very missed my dear friend. I’ll see you in Valhalla.”

Matt Hardy wrote, “Timmy was always so great to me & was a huge supporter of The Hardys. He was the kindest, most fair man you could ever meet. My thoughts go out to his family & loved ones – Rest in power, my friend.”

William Regal said he was deeply saddened to hear of the passing of his dear friend. “My deepest condolences to his family. A great man, referee and person. We’ve laughed so hard together we’ve both had tears in our eyes. There’s not a better way to remember you. Rest well.”

Former WWE referee Tim White passes away at age 68

Former WWE referee Tim White passed away today at age 68. No cause of death has been revealed. The announcement was made by WWE.

White started working with WWE in the 1980’s and was mostly known for being a close friend of Andre The Giant. White traveled everywhere with Andre until his death in 1993 and then transitioned to a full-time role as a referee within the promotion.

During his 24-year career with WWE, White refereed some of the most important matches in WWE history including the Hell In A Cell match between The Undertaker and Mankind in 1998.

White also owned and operated a bar called The Friendly Tap in Rhode Island, a frequent stop for WWE Superstars when the company was in town for TV. The bar featured several times on WWE TV as several skits were filmed there.

He was released from WWE in January 2009 and his last appearance relating to WWE came on an episode of WWE’s Most Wanted Treasures on A&E last year.

White is the second former WWE referee to pass away this weekend following the death of Dave Hebner.

John Morrison tags with Matt Hardy for AAA’s Triplemania XXX match

With Jeff Hardy out of action, Matt Hardy needed a tag team partner for his AAA Triplemania XXX match last night in Tijuana, Mexico.

John Morrison, introduced as Johnny Hardy, ended up being his tag team partner, dressed in typical Hardy attire and doing the usual moves.

The two lost the match against Dralistico and Dragon Lee thanks to Morrison turning on Matt. Hardy was ready to end the match with the Twist of Fate but Morrison low blowed him and then hit the neck breaker, allowing Dralistico to finish Hardy off.

Following the match, Hardy recovered and then hit the Twist of Fate on Morrison as payback.

Jeff was pulled from his match after his third DUI arrest this past Monday in Florida and AAA said the match will go ahead as planned with a mystery partner tagging with Matt.

Randy Orton out for months due to back injury

Randy Orton was the original opponent for Roman Reigns at SummerSlam but that plan went out of the window when Orton’s back injury was more serious than originally thought.

In fact, during his promo on Friday night, Riddle announced that Orton would be needing surgery, something that was rumored a few days before, effectively taking out the Viper for at least the rest of 2022.

The former multi-time champion last wrestled on the May 20 Smackdown when he and Riddle lost the Raw Tag Team titles to The Usos in a title unification match.

His injury comes at a bad time for WWE as they also lost big fan favorite Cody Rhodes to a torn pec earlier this month.

Orton celebrated his 20th year in WWE this year and has been going at full speed ever since he returned from a month off in August 2021.

Winners-take-all for ROH and IWGP Tag Team titles set for Forbidden Door

The ROH Tag Team and IWGP Tag Team titles will be on the line at the upcoming AEWxNJPW: Forbidden Door pay-per-view in a winners-take-all match.

The triple threat match will see FTR, currently the ROH Tag Team champions, versus United Empire, the IWGP Tag Team champions, and Roppongi Vice. The winners of the match will walk out of Chicago with both set of title belts.

This is the sixth match on the Forbidden Door card and a few more are expected to be added in the next week. The show takes place on June 26 so AEW has two more shows – Dynamite and Rampage – to announce further matches.
