Monday Night Raw TV report for 04/23/2018

Hey everybody! It’s @TheMagnumDA with tonight’s Raw report. My computer hit the fritz last night, so thanks for your patience while I get this to you guys a little late.

The Results:

– Show opens with a 10-bell salute and video tribute to the late Bruno Sammartino. Wrestlers have taken their place on the stage for this tribute.

– Brock Lesnar & Paul Heyman came to the ring. They promise to win on Friday at the Greatest Royal Rumble, but Roman Reigns interrupts them and says he will leave Saudi Arabia the Universal Champion.

1. Elias defeated Bobby Roode when Elias rolled Roode up for the pin. (**1/4)

2. Bray Wyatt & Matt Hardy defeated The Ascension with the elevated Twist of Fate. (*1/2)

– Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn were in the ring for the first Sami and Kevin Show. They state that they will win the Greatest Royal Rumble, and then bring out Kurt Angle as their guest. Angle warns them that many foes will be gunning for Owens and Zayn.

3. Dolph Ziggler & Drew McIntyre defeated Apollo Crews and Titus O’Neil. McIntyre pinned Apollo after a Claymore/Zig-Zag double team finisher. (*)

4. Chad Gable defeated Jinder Mahal in a rehash of the Austin/Bret Survivor Series 1996 finish. Gable pulled himself up over Mahal to catch him for the roll-up. (*3/4)

5. Braun Strowman & Bobby Lashley defeated Kevin Owens & Sami Zayn. Strowman pinned Zayn after a running powerslam. (**)

– No Way Jose was supposed to have a match against Baron Corbin, but Corbin refused to wrestle Jose, saying that he wasn’t taking this seriously. Jose said even though there’s no match, that doesn’t mean the party has to stop. Jose leads his conga line around the ring once more. Corbin reappeared to attack Jose and gave him a chokeslam backbreaker on the stage.

6. Finn Bálor and Seth Rollins defeated Curtis Axel and Bo Dallas. Rollins hit a stomp and then Bálor hit the Coup de Grace and pinned Axel. (*3/4)

7. Mickie James, Alexa Bliss, Sarah Logan, Ruby Riott and Liv Morgan defeated Nia Jax, Sasha Banks, Bayley, Ember Moon and Natalya. Mickie, Alexa, and the Riott Squad worked on Natalya’s knee during the match until Ronda Rousey came to her aid. Mickie James gave Ronda a baseball slide, so Rousey got in the ring and locked in an armbar on James, resulting in a disqualification victory for James’ team. (**1/2)

The Good:

Classy Tribute to Bruno: I really thought that the video, the 10-bell salute, and the documentary that followed Raw were fantastic. Great show of respect for one of the legends of WWE lore.

Sami & Kevin Show: These guys were hysterical. The “six kids” line on Angle had me rolling. I thought this was a great way for these guys to continue to get heat as they work their way up the ranks on Raw.

Alexa’s PSA: The anti-bullying PSA, where Alexa accuses Nia Jax of eating a homeless woman’s burrito bowl, was pretty damn funny.

The Bad:

“The Show” – I am not feeling that tag team moniker for Drew & Dolph.

The Main Event – I firmly believe that the women of Raw should deserve a main event spot. I don’t, however, believe that it should be a 10-women tag team match that goes over 15 minutes with a DQ finish. I understand what it all led to, but it was just too long. I was already burned out, at this point.

The Ugly:

The New Shield – Sorry, Bo and Curtis…it’s not happening.

That’s it for me, see you later tonight when I’ll be live-tweeting Smackdown Live! Be sure to look out for the TV report tomorrow. Until then, @TheMagnumDA signing off!

Raw rating for 04/23/2018

Monday Night Raw drew an average of 3,104,000 viewers this week, down 558,000 viewers from last week’s broadcast. It was the least-watched Raw since the February 5 episode.

Hour one had 3,283,000 viewers, followed by 3,210,000 in the second hour, before dropping to 2,819,000 viewers in the third and final hour. Raw lost 464,000 viewers from hour one to hour three.

Raw was #3, #4, and #6 in the top 50 cable chart among the 18-49 demographic as the NBA Playoffs on TNT took the night. It was #4 in overall viewership for the night. (Ratings credit: Showbuzzdaily.com)

Former Knockouts champion Katarina Waters returning to Impact Wrestling

Impact Wrestling announced that Katarina Waters, the artist formerly known as Winter, will be returning to the company in the coming weeks.

The 40-year-old German wrestled for TNA for two years between 2010 and 2012, winning the Knockouts title twice and the Knockouts Tag Team title once with Angelina Love. She left the company in mid-2012 and resumed working the independents.

Prior to joining TNA, Waters wrestled for WWE under the name of Katie Lea Burchill and then dropped the last name after her association with Paul Burchill came to an end. She worked for WWE between 2008 and 2010.

Ronda Rousey wrestling Mickie James in the upcoming European tour

Mickie James will be the first individual to have a singles match against Ronda Rousey in front of a big audience as the veteran Superstar was picked to take on Rousey in her four dates in Europe.

Rousey and James got involved in an angle that closed Raw last night after James continued to beat up an injured Natalya as part of the 10-women tag match main event. For the second week in a row, Rousey came to the aid of Natalya and after she got kicked from the back by James, Rousey stepped in between the ropes, took down the former champion and locked her in an armbar to cause the DQ.

Ever since signing with WWE, Rousey has appeared on the majority of the Raw shows and will now be thrown in the ring alone for her first one-on-one matches. Rousey will be at the May 16 show in Geneva, Switzerland, the May 17 show in Vienna, Austria, the May 18 show in Turin, Italy, and the May 19 show in Paris, France.

Zack Ryder suffers another knee injury

Zack Ryder suffered a knee injury last night during the Main Event television tapings in a match against Mike Kanellis.

Ryder posted on Instagram saying that while the roster will be flying to Saudi Arabia, he will be flying to Orlando to get an MRI. Ryder was featured in the advert for the Greatest Royal Rumble so obviously WWE now has an open spot to fill.

The former Intercontinental champion was out of action for six months last year after he suffered a knee injury in December 2016, forcing his team of The Hype Bros to surrender their #1 contender’s spot for the Smackdown Tag Team titles after they won a battle royal.

Miz TV returns tonight on Smackdown with guest Daniel Bryan

The Miz returns to Smackdown tonight for the first time since last year’s Superstar Shake-Up and he will be hosting Miz TV with Daniel Bryan as his guest.

The two share a long history and rivalry together going back to the first season of NXT where The Miz served as Bryan’s “pro.” The two continued to feud over the years which led to some great television including a fantastic segment on Talking Smack where The Miz absolutely ripped Bryan in an unscripted segment which led to Bryan walking off the show. Since Bryan got cleared again, WWE has teased that these two will cross paths very soon and it looks like they’re pulling the trigger early on this one.

Two matches have already bene announced for tonight’s Smackdown, with Jimmy Uso taking on Erick Rowan and Asuka and Becky Lynch versus Peyton Royce and Billie Kay.

Triple H addresses criticism of WWE choosing money over values and performing in Saudi Arabia

WWE’s push with the women’s evolution has been welcomed by the majority – if not all – wrestling fans. But now, the company is getting flack for taking the money and performing for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia when one of the requests was that no women can be part of the show.

Last year, Sasha Banks and Alexa Bliss made WWE history by becoming the first two women to wrestle in Abu Dhabi in the UAE. They were the only two on the roster and even had custom-made suits that showed no skin apart from their face and hands. But this time around, there will be no such thing.

WWE signed a mega multi-million dollar deal with the Kingdom to perform shows in the country over the next ten years. WWE has been criticized for taking the money and do shows in the very-strict country that only last year allowed women to drive.

But Triple H has defended the move, saying that every culture is different and just because not everyone agree with certain parts of it, it does not mean that it’s not a relevant culture.

Speaking to the UK Independent newspaper, Triple H said, “You can’t dictate to a country or a religion about how they handle things but, having said that, WWE is at the forefront of a women’s evolution in the world and what you can’t do is affect change anywhere by staying away from it.”

He said while the women will not be competing this Friday at the Greatest Royal Rumble, the company did have discussions about it with the Saudis and they believe and hope that in the next few years, the women will be part of their shows there as well.

“The country is in the middle of a shift in how it is dealing with that – the position is changing, and rights are changing, as are the way women are handled and treated in society. We think that’s a great thing and we’re excited to be at the forefront of that change.”

Jim Ross and Jerry Lawler now to be part of the Greatest Royal Rumble Kickoff panel

It looks like the previous plans for Jerry “The King” Lawler and Jim Ross to provide commentary for The Greatest Royal has been changed as WWE is advertising the duo in a different role.

The two WWE Hall of Famers will join fellow Hall of Famer Booker T on the Kickoff panel, a panel which will be anchored by Byron Saxton since Renee Young is not traveling with the crew. No women from WWE are making the trip unfortunately. Lawler and Ross last did commentary at WrestleMania earlier this month, calling the Andre The Giant Memorial Battle Royal which coincidentally was also part of the Kickoff show that day. No announcement was made on who will be calling the five-hour event this coming Friday.

The Greatest Royal Rumble is sold out and over 60,000 fans will be in attendance for the show.

Dwayne Johnson and girlfriend Lauren Hashian welcome second baby girl

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and his girlfriend Lauren Hashian welcomed their second child together today, a baby girl named Tiana Gia.

Johnson was present when the baby was born and wrote in a post on Instagram that it’s hard to express the new level of love, respect, and admiration he has for his girlfriend and all the women out there for going through labor.

The former WWE champion posted a photo holding the newborn and had one message for her: “Your crazy dad has many responsibilities and wears many hats in this big ol’ world, but being your dad will always be the one I’m most proud to wear.”

This is Johnson’s third daughter. His oldest one is named Simone Alexandra and she’s often seen ringside at WrestleMania with her grandmother. His second one is Jasmine Lia.

Congratulations to the couple!

Latest look inside the King Abdullah Sports City Stadium and the Greatest Royal Rumble stage

The latest footage from inside the King Abdullah Sports City Stadium in Jeddah shows the developments of the Greatest Royal Rumble stage which is looking more impressive every day that passes by.

The video, posted by user abdulrahman_arshad shows the big lighting rig and big screens being readied to go up in place with the four corner steel pillars supporting the canopy having an embedded screen in them.

The big ramp is also in place and multiple arches and what seem to be large screen displays on either side of the ramp are up as well.

Meanwhile, WWE and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia took a full page ad on the Wall Street Journal to promote the event. The show will certainly have an “important feel” to it and the stadium-look will also add to the grandeur of it all.

Taking place on July 22, Slammiversary will be held at The Rebel Complex in Toronto, Canada. Toronto is the home of Anthem Sports & Entertainment, the parent company of Impact Wrestling. This will be the 14th annual of the show and with the exception of Bound For Glory, it’s the only pay-per-view that has survived since 2005.

The Rebel Complex launched in October 2016 and is an entertainment venue that can be a nightclub and hosts live concerts as well. The video walls surrounding the perimeter of the club and its layout will surely give a unique look to the show.

Impact Wrestling unveils new title belts designs at Redemption

Eight months after redesigning all their titles, Impact Wrestling yesterday debuted their brand new belts which sport the Impact Wrestling logo.

The previous titles all were originally designed with the Global Force Wrestling logo but they were badly altered after the whole Anthem/GFW partnership fell through.

During one of his promotional appearances for the movie Rampage in the United Kingdom with KISS FM, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson said that he was indeed approached by Vince McMahon to team up with Ronda Rousey at WrestleMania 34.

The answer popped up when The Rock was asked if he would go back to professional wrestling and WWE specifically. “Oh yeah, absolutely, sure,” The Rock replied. He said that two months ago, he and Vince McMahon were discussing what he would do if he was able to come back at WrestleMania.

He said the idea pitched was the mixed tag team match of him and Rousey taking on Stephanie and Triple H. Rock said that he’s very proud of Ronda and what she’s doing.

“We couldn’t make it work this time because I was in Shanghai, but who knows down the line?” Johnson said.

Greatest Royal Rumble will run for 5 hours!

Just because a seven-hour WrestleMania wasn’t enough two weeks ago…WWE will have a five-hour Greatest Royal Rumble next Friday!

The WWE Network schedule was updated with the running time for the show and it’s listed as starting at Noon EST and running till 5PM EST. There will also be a one-hour Kickoff show before which starts at 11AM EST. The start time will be a bit “weird” for those living in the United States but it’s a welcome change for those on the other side of the world, especially those in Europe and the Middle East. The show starts at 7PM local time.

There seems to be no more tickets available for the show which will be held at The King Abdullah Sports City Stadium. All five sections which were available for purchase now have a “will be available later” notice. If WWE manages to fill the 60,000+ seater stadium it will be a big achievement and a good start to the 10-year relationship between WWE and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

The Greatest Royal Rumble will air on the WWE Network and on traditional pay-per-view on select providers around the world.

Raw brand wraps up tour in South Africa

The four-day WWE tour in South Africa wrapped up today with a final show at the TicketPro Dome in Johannesburg.

WWE Superstars performed twice in Cape Town and then a show in Pretoria yesterday before the final event in Johannesburg. A different main event was presented each time although some matches were the same throughout the tour. As expected, Roman Reigns was the only constant in the main events. The only Superstar advertised who didn’t travel was Alexa Bliss who is rumored to have undergone minor cosmetic surgery last week.

But those who did go looked like they had a great time, posting photos on their respective social media which include the widely-popular safari tours. Titus O’Neil also posted a hilarious video of one super excited Uber driver who picked him, Seth Rollins, Bayley, and Sasha Banks one day. The driver was a big WWE fan which led to a lot of laughs from the Superstars riding with him.

The Raw crew will be back in the United States tomorrow in time for Monday’s show before departing again for Saudi Arabia with the Smackdown folks for the Greatest Royal Rumble event.
