Few heavyweights have built a career out of nights this strange. Tyson Fury has been floored and written off more often than any champion of his era, and he has come back from both, which is part of why the Fury Odds for his meeting with Anthony Joshua have been picked over so closely. His professional record reads 36 wins, two defeats and one draw, with 25 wins inside the distance. Those numbers hide how far several of the fights travelled.

Beating Wladimir Klitschko in Germany

On 28 November 2015, Fury went to the Esprit Arena in Dusseldorf to face Wladimir Klitschko, who had held a version of the world heavyweight title for more than nine years. Fury switched stances, took the centre of the ring and never let the champion set his feet. The judges returned 116-111, 115-112 and 115-112, all for the challenger. He flew home with the WBA, IBF and WBO belts, having won them in an away corner.

Rising from the canvas against Deontay Wilder

The first fight with Deontay Wilder, at the Staples Center in Los Angeles on 1 December 2018, ended in a split draw. One judge had Wilder by 115-111, one had Fury by 114-112, and the third scored it level. What most people recall is the 12th round. Wilder landed a right hand followed by a left hook, Fury went down flat on his back, and he was upright again before the count finished. He had been dropped in the ninth as well.

The rematch and the trilogy fight

The rematch at the MGM Grand Garden Arena on 22 February 2020 reversed the pattern completely. Fury walked forward from the opening bell, put Wilder down in the third and fifth rounds, and forced the corner to throw in the towel in the seventh. The WBC title came with it.

The third meeting, at the T-Mobile Arena on 9 October 2021, was the wildest of the three. Fury dropped Wilder in the third, was floored twice himself in the fourth, knocked Wilder down again in the 10th and stopped him in the 11th. The Ring named it its fight of the year.

A record crowd at Wembley

A crowd of 94,000 watched Fury stop Dillian Whyte at Wembley Stadium on 23 April 2022, the largest attendance for a boxing match in Europe. Five rounds of careful work gave little away. Then Fury landed an uppercut in the sixth that dropped Whyte and finished the contest. Fury announced a retirement in the ring afterwards, the first of several that did not hold.

The Francis Ngannou scare

Fury met Francis Ngannou, a former UFC champion with no professional boxing fights behind him, at the Kingdom Arena in Riyadh on 28 October 2023. Ngannou put him down with a left hook in the third round. Fury took the split decision on cards of 96-93 and 95-94, with the third judge scoring 95-94 the other way. Two defeats to Oleksandr Usyk

Both losses came in the same building. Oleksandr Usyk beat Fury on a split decision in Riyadh on 18 May 2024 to become the first undisputed heavyweight champion of the four-belt era. The scores read 115-112 and 114-113 for the Ukrainian, with 114-113 the other way. Usyk had him held up on the ropes in the ninth round, and the referee gave a standing count. The rematch on 21 December 2024 was less tight, with all three judges scoring 116-112 for Usyk.

Fury retired again in January 2025 and stayed out for 16 months, then beat Arslanbek Makhmudov on points at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in April 2026 on his return.

What the fights add up to

His best performances share a shape. Fury is usually behind the story, often behind on the cards, and he wins by outlasting a puncher rather than outpunching him. Klitschko gave him the belts, the Wilder trilogy made his name in the United States, and Usyk remains the only man to have beaten him.
