When WWE started using the Greatest Wrestling Match Ever tag line for the upcoming Edge vs Randy Orton match at Backlash, everyone raised their eyebrows because in professional wrestling, tagging something the “greatest ever” usually always disappoints.
One of those who also thought it wasn’t the greatest idea ever – pun intended – was Edge. Speaking to ESPN.COM, Edge said that he laughed when they told him the tag line because he did not think they were serious about it. “Then I realized fairly quickly it was,” he said.
Edge spoke how anytime you say something is the “greatest ever” beforehand, you’re setting yourself up for failure as most of the time it’s hard to live up to expectations from fans.
“And I don’t ever want to think that way. I need to think the opposite of that. I can’t control the court of public opinion. I need to do and be proud of the work that I put in,” Edge continued. “All I can do is take it as if this is all just a bonus and in a weird way, a compliment. Or it’s a giant rib. I don’t know.”
The WWE Hall of Famer said that there’s no such thing as the greatest match ever simply because it’s impossible to judge, just like you can’t say which is the greatest song or movie ever.
“It’s impossible, because there’s no general consensus – you can have great matches, but what is the greatest is going to be different to almost everybody. Vince is a promoter, and he’s promoting, but it’s like hyperbole. I mean, to me [the greatest match is] not possible. So that takes that pressure out of my mind immediately,” Edge said.
