Rampage TV report for 07/15/2022

Arena: Enmarket Arena
City: Savannah, Georgia

Assuming we are getting Bucks/FTR III at All Out, Wednesday’s title change was… interesting.  With the Bucks being initially penciled in to win the IWGP belts at Forbidden Door, the best guess is that each side would’ve had two sets of belts to brag about, two claims to be the best in the world, and one win against the other: perfectly matched, let’s see who the true champs really are.

But to set up such a clash of the titans, both needed to be at the top of their games.  Despite not taking the pinfall, Wednesday’s loss damages that.  Guess we’ll see what happens between now and then.

And now…

It’s Saturday morning, and you know what that means…  it’s time for our Rampage Review!

John Silver & Alex Reynolds vs Kings of the Black Throne

Backstory: Faces made the challenge on Wed (incl Hangman) but changed from trios to tag on Thursday.

This was the 50th ep and we had the old Dynamite trio of Tony, Jim and Excalibur, plus Jericho on comms.

This one began with very slick chain wrestling, including a quick pin attempt from Reynolds.  Until a vicious kitchen-sink from Black changed things, Brody blind-tagging in but Reynolds avoiding a chop in the corner and tagging in Silver.  Who squared-up to King, tried a shoulder charge which Brody laughed off, then several more with the same result, leading to a diving one which took the big guy to the mat.  Very briefly.

Popping right back up, King knocked Silver right back down.

Some slick double-teaming from the Dark Order saw them briefly take control, dispatching Malakai with a slam and King with an enziguri.  But Reynolds was then caught mid-dive by Brody and spiked outside just as the break began.

We returned with Reynolds in trouble, finally getting the tag as Silver attacked Malakai with a running uppercut, an Angle slam, 1, 2, kickout.  Silver’s offensive flurries are great.  After quickly tagging back in, Reynolds ate a boot running in on Malakai in the corner, then another right into a huge clothesline from King.

After Black missed with a moonsault to the outside, Silver and Reynolds hit their usual double-team flurry to Brody, culminating in the flip-over pin from Reynolds but at the last second Malakai came off the top for the save.  Blasting Silver to the outside with a heel kick, Malakai then fed Reynolds to King for Dante’s Inferno: arrivederci.

Very good opener.  Fun to watch; not so fun to take notes on.

After the inevitable victory, Darby Allin attacked Brody, and Sting had a looooong stare-down with Malakai while the other two brawled.

WINNER: The House always wins

Miro promo – asked if he should tear out the ‘pagans’ spines’ (H.O.B.).  Wondered if Malakai spat the mist to destroy him… or recruit him.

Jonathan Gresham vs Lee Moriarty, ROH World Title

Backstory: Gresham turned on Moriarty last week because he’s tired of sitting at home, presumably his couch sucks

Caprice Coleman joined on comms.  The champ ‘hasn’t returned my phone calls.’  So Gresham’s gone up in my opinion.  On the subject, he came out with all of Tully Blanchard Ent.

Offering a handshake with a sarcastic smile, Gresham quickly bailed to the outside.  Returning briefly, Moriarty blasted him with a knee and he bailed again.  This time the youngster pursued him, introducing him to the guard rail, flinging him back inside and stalking his prey.

Good stuff from Moriarty who came across as genuinely pissed.

With the ref’s back turned, Gresham hit a backhand to the balls and kind-of? took advantage, beginning with slow mat-work in the middle, then repeated headlock takeovers to go to break with a bang.

We returned to the ref counting 2 on a Gresham pin, Moriarty then exploding with a rebound boot to the face and knees to the face before Gresham again targeted the arm, as he’d done from the start.  Moriarty hit a beautiful dropkick and a ‘Tiger-Mask-style suplex’ for a close 2.

A bunch of chain wrestling bought Gresham a 2, the pair then exchanged two-counts.  Then the Octopus-Stretch-out-of-nowhere (not as fun as the RKO) led to the tap.

An impressive outing for Moriarty who was excellent against Danielson earlier in the year.

However, the prestige spots on Rampage are the opener and the main event.  This went on second.

Add to that the fact that the guy-who-does-a-weird-dance-down-to-the-ring-before-he-loses is considered a legitimate challenger for their World Championship and those wallets’ll be opening themselves come the 23rd.

Post-match, Tully proclaimed Gresham the best technical wrestler in the world; Claudio had a problem with that, and we’ve got our presumed main event for the ppv (this was confirmed later).  Hard to see Gresham holding onto his belt given Castagnoli’s stature since his arrival.  Not to mention the idea of two world champs in the same faction.

WINNER: Jonathan Gresham

Christopher Daniels promo on Samoa Joe’s behalf.

Athena & Statlander vs Renegade Twins

Backstory: Athena & Stat continue their quest for Jade & the TBS title

Squash time.  Launching immediate stereo dropkicks, Athena and Statlander had this won before the bell even rang.  It did just in time for the O-Face and the victory.

Leila Grey started talking trash and was about to get obliterated until Jade and Kiera Hogan attacked in what must’ve been the most devastating five-second moves in history given how quickly and completely the good girls were laid out.

I speculated last week about tag titles for the ladies.  It’s equally possible they’re bringing back the tag tourney they’ve done in the past, but something’s cooking with all the pairings they’ve set up.

WINNER: Athena & Statlander

Stokely Hathaway interrupted Sydal and Moriarty backstage, said Moriarty should be doing more.  Sydal countered by announcing Lee would face Dante Martin next Friday, Dante then entered and the two shook.  Moriarty could do worse than take Hathaway up on his offer; he’s an excellent talker.

Then the Gunn Club were in the ring to explain why they ‘turned’ on the Acclaimed.

The better question would be why Billy prevented his boys from laying a beatdown twice only to then just do it anyway.  There’s a term for tales with red herrings which don’t make sense, existing only to ‘fool’ the audience: SWERVE BRO!

Anyway, the Acclaimed arrived sans promo, beelining to the ring and only afterwards laying the verbal smackdown, challenging the ‘Ass Boys’ to a match, which they declined.  Acclaimed were as over as anyone before a crowd that was either dead over both nights, or very small.

And after all was said and done, we never did find out why.  Guess it’ll go down with whoever raised the briefcase on Stone Cold in ‘99.  Or who drove the white hummer.

Lucha Bros vs Private Party

Backstory: Continues the LB vs Andrade/Rush feud w Andrade sending his underlings at the Bros

There was a little disunity between PP and Andrade in the pre-match promo, as he hadn’t been returning their messages.

From the get-go, Private Party tried to double Penta but after a brief spell in their corner, he ducked and dodged, tagging in his brother for a thrust kick party and the ‘uno, dos, tres’ kicks which PP ducked, following-up with stereo dives to the outside.  Quen then went topside but missed, Fenix striking with the rolling, leaping cutter for the first pin and a count of 2.

Another thrust kick party and this time the ‘uno, dos, tres’ landed but Cassidy distracted the Bros.  PP then hit silly string and Cassidy a cutter to Fenix, causing him to fall from the apron, leaving Penta alone as the final ads arrived.

Still isolated as we rejoined, the crowd were behind Penta as he finally got the tag and Fenix exploded with speed and grace only Nick Jackson and Dante Martin can hope to match.  Then he showed his vicious side with brutal slaps and chops in the corner to Cassidy, who pushed him off but Rey rebounded with an enziguri, bringing in Quen who hoisted Fenix onto his shoulders for Cassidy to dive off with a cross body for another count of 2.

Quen tagging in legitimately, PP hit a weak looking inverted atomic drop/enziguri combo and then Penta slipped trying a cross body from the top.  The crowd booed.  Penta tagged in with a thrust kick to Quen and DVD’d Quen onto Cassidy in the corner, then got a close 2 with made in Japan.

While trying to distract Penta, Jose was dragged down by Alex Abrahantes and the two brawled, Penta then struck with a thrust kick to Andrade on the apron and with the ref distracted, Rush’s interference backfired, leading to Fenix hitting the Black Fire Driver for the win.

Hit and miss.  Never felt like it got into a flow.

Afterward, Andrade and co. bickered.

WINNER: Lucha Bros

On Dynamite:

  • Jericho vs Kingston, barbed wire ‘everywhere’ & JAS in shark cages
  • Varsity Blondes vs Christian & Luchasaurus
  • Brody King vs Darby Allin
  • Best Friends vs Mox & Yuta (interesting pair)

On Rampage:

  • Moriarty vs Dante

To sum-up succinctly: a solid show, but nada mas.

Check Out…

  • The opener was fun but nothing to go out of your way for

Thanks for reading.  Have a great weekend!

Cody says he almost hemorrhaged during torn pec surgery

Cody Rhodes revealed during an appearance on Busted Open Radio today that he almost hemorrhaged during his torn pec surgery last month because of the amount of blood he had following his injury.

“People have seen the picture of it in the match, so it was pretty gnarly,” Cody said.

The American Nightmare, now in recovery, noted how doctors don’t want to give him a timeline for his return yet because they’re afraid if they give him a specific date, he will overdo his work to try and return a month or two earlier than he is supposed to.

But when he does return, you can expect a documentary to be released afterward. Cody said that WWE cameras are following him, and have been following him, since WrestleMania. He said that the documentary originally had a different “storyline” but now that he got injured, the work of the documentary “changed greatly.”

Tickets for All Out 2022 week now available

Single and combo tickets for the All Out pay-per-view week events went on sale this morning on Ticketmaster.com.

AEW is selling four different kind of tickets – single tickets to the live Dynamite on Wednesday, August 31, single tickets to the live Rampage on Friday, September 2, single tickets to the All Out pay-per-view on Sunday, September 4, and combo tickets for all three events.

Single tickets for the All Out pay-per-view are gone except for some platinum tickets which are going well over $1,000 in price. Around 1,000 combo tickets remain for all three shows and they start at $135 for all events. Many more tickets for Dynamite and Rampage are available as well and they’re not close yet to sell out.

All three shows will be held at the NOW Arena in Hoffman Estates, Illinois. The same location hosted the 2019 and 2021 All Out shows. This is the second time in a row that Illinois gets an AEW pay-per-view following Forbidden Door in June.

Eric Bischoff announces second autobiography titled Grateful

Former WCW President and WWE Executive Director Eric Bischoff announced his second autobiography, titled Grateful.

Available now for pre-order at BischoffBook.com, Grateful, the follow-up to 2006’s Controversy Creates Cash, is slated for an early November release. It is produced in partnership with NITRO author Guy Evans and covers Bischoff’s post-2006 career, including his WWE return, AEW involvement, TNA experience, and much more.

“If you were to talk to me in 2006 or 2007,” said Bischoff, “I fully believed that my days in pro wrestling were over. If you had asked me what the next 15 years of my life would look like, it would be nothing like what ultimately transpired.”

Bischoff said that over the past 15 years, he had some wonderful successes and some spectacular failures along with some really difficult times for his family.

“In fact, far from being grateful, there were years in which I was frequently angry – and mostly angry at myself, by the way,” Bischoff continued. “But here I am, and as of today…I’ve made a comeback. Not a complete comeback – but close. I’ve learned that it’s one thing to achieve success, but another thing to achieve it, lose it, and then achieve it again. I’m on my way – and Grateful tells that story in its entirety.”

Dwayne Johnson turns down offer to host The 2022 Emmy Awards

In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson revealed that he was offered the spot to host the 2022 Emmy Awards in September but he had to turn down the offer due to a scheduling conflict.

“It was just schedule. I was really, truly honored when they came to me and asked, but it was just a scheduling thing,” he told ET. “That’s all. That’s really what it comes down to.”

Currently promoting the DC League of Super-Pets, Johnson’s schedule is jam-packed and does not joke when he says he’s the busiest man in entertainment at the moment.

A source told ET that Johnson’s reason for declining the offer was because he’s currently “in the middle of his tour and is preparing for the taping of his comedy special, which will be taping this fall.”

His next movie, Black Adam, is released on October 21 and a major publicity tour is planned for the release.

The Forbidden Door documentary streaming on NJPW World

New Japan Pro Wrestling has made a documentary about the recent Forbidden Door pay-per-view which is now available to watch on NJPW World.

Titled The Forbidden Door, the documentary explores NJPW’s past with WCW, how the pay-per-view came to be and what lies beyond. It also features exclusive interviews shot specifically for this doc with Sting, William Regal, Chris Jericho, and more. A subscription is required to watch it.

The Forbidden Door pay-per-view was a successful one for both AEW and NJPW with over $1 million in gate money and millions more in PPV revenue. AEW President Tony Khan is looking at making this a yearly event but said that the show will have to be held in North America rather than going back-and-forth to Japan due to time difference.

Dynamite rating for 07/13/2022

The show was #1 in the top 50 cable chart for the night among the 18-49 demo with a 0.32 rating, also down from the 0.36 the show did over the past two weeks. (Ratings credit: Showbuzzdaily.com)

How to boost business with Google Reviews

Google reviews have become paramount today for the survival and excelling of any business. Customers rely on online reviews on word of mouth and personal referrals. Around 90% of customers search for online reviews before shopping. How can you use it too to boost sales? Let’s find out.

Improved Search Rankings

SEO holds utmost importance in retail reputation management. To enhance your ranking on the search engine, the uniqueness and relevancy of keywords play a crucial part. You will be surprised to learn that these depend not only on the content you are putting out but also on the content being written about you by the customers. The SEO rankings factor in your keywords in the comment section. Google prioritizes higher-rated websites and makes them appear higher in the search results. It automatically increases the chances of customers picking your business over the rest.

Think about this, when was the last time you opened the fifth or sixth link that showed up with your query? Users going to the second or third pages is very less probable. Hence, you want to be among the top three, so try engaging your customers as much as possible.

Make The Review Process Easier

Customers today use online reviews as an accurate indicator of the credibility and quality of a business’s offerings, and why wouldn’t they? With transparency on the internet, it has become easier to compare and contrast different substitutes. Customers want the best value for their money and do a thorough investigation to find a solution to their problems.

A filled-out review section is significant for personal reputation management and prospects to turn into real customers. One way you can do so is by making it easy to leave a review. Customers usually perceive it to be a hectic process and opt out of doing so even when satisfied. You cannot afford to miss out on the valuable insights of these customers.

Heighten the chances of these customers to rate your business by:

  • placing clear CTA buttons on the web page and emails
  • Easy to follow instructions
  • include an easy instructional video
  • provide an option to attach pictures

Ask For Reviews

Sometimes customers need a push in the right direction. They might be completely content with your business and its offerings, but adding a review might never cross their mind. You highlighting the importance of their feedback can be an easy way to get them going. Customers that are satisfied and loyal tend to rate your business highly.

Reach out to them, and let them know that their feedback is valued and will help you continue the service with utmost dedication. Take your personal online reputation management up a notch by bringing in a touch of customization. Follow up with the customers with a tailored email or a one-to-one call. Convincing a customer directly increases their chances of agreeing to give a review. Nonetheless, ensure that you are not being pushy in any way.

Add Pictures

A picture speaks a thousand words. You can get customers to write paragraphs upon paragraphs about how amazing your product is, but it can never match the impact a standalone picture can bring. Encourage customers to attach pictures with reviews so that future potential customers can look closely at what they will be getting. Customers are still skeptical about online purchasing as many sites are scams and provide pictures of their products that look nothing like what gets delivered. Hence, having a picture of your products on your website is necessary, but that alone might not suffice. Customers will be more convinced when an existing user uploads a picture in the reviews. Always add a section for picture attachments in your review section. It is a very effective tip for personal reputation management online.

A Referral Campaign

Kill two birds with one stone. Incentivize customers to leave feedback but do so that they are encouraged to come back to you in the future. For example, providing them a certain percentage off on their next purchase as a reward for a review will tie them up with your business, and they are more likely to make a purchase again later to avail of the discount. This way, you get to manage google reviews as well as boost sales. Other ways of incentivizing can include providing customers with a referral code for their friends and family. If they make a purchase using it, the person of reference gets a discounted price. Again, more sales!

More and better reviews lead to enhanced SEO rankings, which help a business stand out among the sea of competitors. Google reviews are one very effective tool that, if utilized correctly, can change how customers engage with your business. The aforementioned tips should be great to start with.

Raw’s move to TV-14 put on hold after USA Network memo sent prematurely

WWE logo

The apparent move to TV-14 for Monday Night Raw came to a screeching halt the same day it was leaked after a memo at USA Network was sent out prematurely according to Andrew Zarian of Mat Men Podcast who originally broke the news.

“This is a wild situation,” Zarian wrote. “There’s a lot happening behind the scenes. WWE Raw won’t be going to TV-14 on July 18th, but still in consideration for a later date.”

The news of the switch was met with joy online, including from several WWE Superstars who addressed the issue. One particular Superstar, Natalya, wrote that she’s been bad lately and needed to be “spanked,” adding #PG14Nattie to her tweet.

Raw has been carrying a TV-PG rating since July 2008 after the company decided to do more family-friendly programming to attract a wider audience and more corporate sponsorships.

Jim Ross discusses switch in AEW commentary duties

During the latest episode of his Grilling JR podcast, Jim Ross discussed the recent change in commentary pattern on Dynamite and Rampage.

Ross, who has been part of the Dynamite commentary team since day one, is now doing only the second hour of the show and then stays on to do the one-hour Rampage TV tapings that follow the conclusion of Dynamite.

Ross said that it was purely a Tony Khan decision after he thought that Dynamite needed a “boost” half-way through the broadcast. JR now gets an entrance, hypes up the crowd at the top of the stage, and joins the commentary team for the remainder of the broadcast.

“So I come out in the middle of the show. Still going to call the main event,” JR said. “Then we all take a bathroom break with the crew and then we go right into taping Rampage.”

The WWE Hall Of Famer added that he did not have any issues or objections to the change and he’s happy to give Rampage a boost with his commentary, noting that they need to “get the ratings up” and the change was one of the reasons for that.

WWE Raw switching to TV-14 rating, ditching TV-PG for good

WWE logo

Andrew Zarian of the Mat Men Podcast broke the news today that Monday Night Raw will be ditching its TV-PG rating starting from the July 18 episode and will return to TV-14.

This effectively ends the “PG Era” of WWE which started on July 22, 2008 in a bid to attract a wider audience and more corporate sponsors with family-friendly programming.

While WWE is not going back to it’s “Attitude Era” days, especially since the majority of that type of stuff won’t fly in today’s woken world, a TV-14 rating will allow everyone to be a bit more edgy, both when it comes to on-screen presentation as well as on the microphone.

The transition to PG in 2008 did not go down very well with wrestling fans but as society moved more towards being politically correct throughout the years, it was certainly a decision that made sense business-wise.

Smackdown has always been rated TV-PG since its inception in 1999 and Zarian only mentioned that it will be Raw which moves to TV-14.

The Toxic Attraction leader defended the title this week against Roxanne Perez, retaining the title after Cora Jade turned on her partner and provided some assist for Rose.

None of the participants in the battle royal have been announced yet.

UFC FIghters who have crossed over to pro wrestling

Traditionally, athletes have changed their sports to try something new. It happened a lot before the 20th century when sports were less commercialized.

The world of fighting sports can be one in which athletes crossover from one sport to another. This happens for various reasons: some may want to test themselves in other disciplines and prove their dominance across the board.

In the UFC’s nearly three decades of existence, there have been many crossover stars that have tried their hand at Pro Wrestling. Here are some of the individuals who shifted to the world of pro wrestling.

Brock Lesnar

Before Brock Lesnar became a UFC heavyweight champion, he competed in and dominated the world of collegiate wrestling. Lesnar, who represented the University of Minnesota in wrestling, became NCAA heavyweight champion in his senior year, echoing Olympic gold medalist Kurt Angle’s path in combat sports; who he defeated at WrestleMania 19 for the WWE Championship.

In 2008, Lesnar quit wrestling and tried his hand in the more diverse environment of mixed martial arts. After losing his debut fight to Frank Mir, he defeated Randy Couture to become the UFC heavyweight champion in his third fight.

As we know, he has since returned to the WWE and has become an even bigger star than his original push and his experience in the UFC. While he only appears to be a part-time performer, there is no denying that he still holds the same star appeal that he did when he first arrived as a young man.

Ronda Rousey

In 2011, the UFC made headlines by purchasing the promotion Strikeforce, home to several elite fighters and champions such as Ronda Rousey. The most important story of the purchase was that for the first time in Ultimate Fighting Championship history, women would finally have the chance to compete in UFC.

Rousey’s dominance in the UFC was unrivaled, as she successfully defended her title six times. In fact, during her time in the sport, she was always heavily favored by those searching for UFC odds to take advantage of, as she was always a surefire bet for many to come out victorious whenever she entered the octagon.

Of course, we know that this did not last long, though, as the Australian decided to hang up her gloves and retire from MMA before signing a full-time contract with the WWE, where she has become a key part of the wrestling promotion and perhaps a driver in helping to further push women’s wrestling.

Matt Riddle

Matt Riddle got the chance to compete in the seventh season of “The Ultimate Fighter” when he was just 22 years old. He had an impressive debut, winning his first fight nine seconds into the second round. Riddle beat Dante Rivera unanimously in his debut for UFC after being signed, winning four of the next five fights he had for the promotion.

Riddle looked to a career in professional wrestling and started training in 2014 as he looked for new opportunities, and following more than four years of competing on the independent circuit, the star finally reached his goal of breaking into the WWE, where he has been receiving a number of pushes, including one alongside one of the biggest stars to have existed in professional wrestling, Randy Orton.

Paige VanZant

Paige VanZant showcased her talent in her octagon debut, beating Kailin Curran by TKO in the third round. Rose Namajunas snapped VanZant’s four-fight win streak in December 2015.

She subsequently became one of the biggest names in the sport, but as recently as 2021, she decided to try her hand at professional wrestling after signing with AEW and competing for them on regular basis, having only recently made her debut with the company at May’s Double or Nothing event in 2022 as part of American Top Team alongside Ethan Page and Scorpio Sky.

Final Thoughts

The world of pro wrestling is filled with stars who are familiar faces to UFC fans. The above stars are the top UFC fighters who switched to pro wrestling after retiring or being forced out of their sport. Most of them have had success, whereas others have struggled to find their footing in the world of sports entertainment.

Strickland and Lee win AEW Tag Team titles on Dynamite

The Young Bucks’ second reign as AEW Tag Team champions came to a close already as last night on Dynamite, Swerve Strickland and Keith Lee became the new champions after they defeated The Bucks and Powerhouse Hobbs and Ricky Starks in a three-way match.

This is the first gold in AEW for both Strickland and Lee, who each joined the company this year after getting released from WWE.

The win caps off a rough few days for Lee, who wrote on Tuesday that he received some bad news about his “two brothers.” Tony Khan, appearing on Busted Open Radio, did not want to reveal any information but said that AEW would support Lee.

Lee did elaborate on the situation after the victory, saying a very close friend of his was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer and he dedicated the match to him and to another friend.

You can check out the post-match speech below.

All Out 2022 announced for NOW Arena in Hoffman Estates, Illinois

AEW yesterday announced that All Out is returning to the NOW Arena in Hoffman Estates, Illinois, during Labor Day weekend.

The company will also have a live Dynamite on Wednesday, August 31, and live Rampage on Friday, September 2, before the actual pay-per-view on Sunday, September 4.

Tickets for all the shows will go on sale this Friday morning at 10AM ET at AEWTix.com.

The 2019 and 2021 All Out pay-per-views were also held at the NOW Arena and while they were praised for the crowd, the location of the NOW Arena makes it a less desirable option for fans as it’s really in the middle of nowhere with not much transportation available.

Sasha Banks announced for Chicago Comic & Entertainment Expo under her real name

The Chicago Comic & Entertainment Expo announced today that former WWE Raw and Smackdown Women’s champion Sasha Banks will be appearing at their event on Saturday, August 6, and Sunday, August 7.

This will be Banks’ first public appearance ever since she quit WWE along with Naomi back in May.

Banks is being advertised under her real name of Mercedes Varnado.

“Please join us in welcoming our next #C2E2 guest, Mercedes Varnado (Sasha Banks)!Whether you’ve seen her in the ring or as Koska Reeves in The Mandalorian, you are not going to want to miss out on this photo and autograph opportunity,” the announcement said.

A photo op will go for $90 while an autograph is being sold for $70. They are available to pre-order now.

Both Banks and Namoi have been removed from the internal WWE roster although they still appear on WWE.COM as active. The two are believed to be gone from the company completely but WWE never made an official announcement.
