NXT kicks off their year of Takeovers on Saturday night, with a Royal Rumble warm-up in San Antonio.
As usual, it’s a five-match show – so let’s get going with our preview and picks!
NXT Championship: Shinsuke Nakamura (c) vs. Bobby Roode
Despite losing the title at the last Takeover event in November, Nakamura managed to regain the title a fortnight later on NXT’s tour of Japan – and with Samoa Joe having disappeared from NXT, it’s left Bobby Roode free to claim his title shot.
Of course, Roode won a four-way against Tye Dillinger, Roderick Strong and Andrade “Cien” Almas just before Christmas to get this shot – but thanks to the way NXT’s taped, there’s barely been any interaction ahead of the go-home shows. Save for “I’m the number one contender” there isn’t really any issue here, and since both of these guys really should be on the main roster, it’s hard to pick a winner here. Part of me feels that Nakamura isn’t going up anytime soon, nor should be be losing back-to-back title matches on Takeovers, so this should be a no-brainer. Prediction: Shinsuke Nakamura
NXT Women’s Championship: Asuka (c) vs. Billie Kay vs. Peyton Royce vs. Nikki Cross
Guess the odd (two) out! NXT have really struggled to replenish their women’s division since this summer’s call-ups, and let’s be honest, in the fan’s eyes there really is a yawning chasm between Asuka and the “second tier” of Nikki Cross and Ember Moon. There’s a Grand Canyon between those and Billie Kay and Peyton Royce… and yet again to the perceived “bottom tier” with the likes of Livv Morgan, Aaliyah and Daria Berenato.
So yeah, this really should be Asuka vs. Cross, but the addition of the Aussies makes the finish less assured. If there is going to be a title change, it means that Asuka keeps her unbeaten record alive, and I’m thinking that as Asuka has now eclipsed the period WWE recognises Paige for as the longest reigning NXT champion, there could be a switch. If there is, I can’t see anyone but Nikki taking it… but she’s not been established as a competitor in my mind.
It’s a crap-shoot, but I’ll go for Asuka to retain. Prediction: Asuka
(Note: although Paige’s run was 308 “real” days, WWE only recognised the start as the date her title win aired, which shortens the reign to 274 days; as of Takeover, Asuka’s reign will be 302 days long)
NXT Tag Team Championship: #DIY (Tommaso Ciampa & Johnny Gargano) (c) vs. Authors of Pain (Akam & Rezar)
This is the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic winners vs. the newly-crowned champions in a match that very few are expecting much of… and that’s only for the challengers. The Authors of Pain have only been working as a team for a year – with Akam having the most experience of the two, thanks to his two years in NXT.
The size difference will mean that this will be a fun “smaller guys bounce around, then tie their opponents up in knots” match, but it’s way too early for the Authors to be holding the gold in my mind. Of course, if there’s any plans for Gargano or Ciampa to be called up, that may force a change, but there’s been no rumblings, so I’m predicting that #DIY will retain. Prediction: #DIY
Eric Young vs. Tye Dillinger
Some suspect that this may be Tye’s farewell to NXT, as his high-profile but not unsubtle losing streak seems to be pointing towards him moving up to the main roster. There is a story going into this, as Young offered Tye a spot in SAnitY… but Tye turned it down, and instead we got the former Big Damo (now Killian Dain) getting that spot after the group ejected the injured Sawyer Fulton. Still, Eric’s bitter about it, so we’re getting this blow-off. Given the storyline is “Tye struggles to win”, there’s only one way this can go – with Tye losing and popping up the next day in a certain match. Prediction: Eric Young.
Roderick Strong vs. Andrade “Cien” Almas
This continues the run of well under-built Takeover matches for Almas since his NXT debut. He wasn’t even on the last Takeover card, and his recent matches have been indicative of someone who’s been bobbing along without much direction. Strong, on the other hand, has largely been on the winning side of matches, and given that there’s not much going on for either man on the back of this, I’m going to go for an Almas win to keep things even. Prediction: Andrade Almas.

This episode of Total Divas showcased some important moments for everyone on the Divas roster.
For Renee Young, this episode was especially important because it showed what happened when she brought her boyfriend, WWE Superstar Dean Ambrose home to meet her family in Toronto Canada. In the beginning of the episode, Renee shared her concerns about Dean with fellow Diva Natalya. Renee explained that her family had only met Dean after wrestling events, and therefore may associate him more with his wrestling persona than with the man she had come to love. Natalia suggested that Renee might encourage Dean to be a tad bit less eccentric during their trip to Toronto. Once Renee’s parents arrived, however, it became clear that Dean had no intention of changing his personality for any length of time.
In fact, Dean seemed to act slightly more eccentric than usual, encouraging Renee’s mother, Carol, to drink heavily and suggesting that she try dangerous activities such as bungee jumping. Renee became really concerned one evening at dinner when Dean chased down a man who had stolen her hat forcing him to return it and apologize. Renee may have been embarrassed by Dean, but I found his actions to be noble and even slightly heroic.
Renee’s mother clearly shared my feelings, because after two days of Renee’s giving Dean the cold shoulder, she confronted Renee and accused her of forcing Dean to be someone other than himself I think that Renee’s mother was right when she said, “If you keep trying to stop someone from having fun they won’t want to be around you.” Renee’s mother also said that Renee couldn’t ask for a better man than one who would chase a hat thief down the street to make sure his girlfriend’s property was returned.
Meanwhile, another Diva was getting ready for a big event as well.
Lana and her fiancé, Rusev were busy making the final preparations for their wedding in Malibu, California. Lana decided that she wanted a beach wedding and a circus themed reception. Rusev loves elephants, so Lana thought be nice to surprise him by having a live elephant at their reception.
However, when Lana confided this idea to fellow Diva, Maryse she informed Lana that performing elephants were badly mistreated, and therefore by having them at her wedding Lana would be contributing to animal cruelty. Maryse even sent Lana a video about the mistreatment of performing elephants.
After seeing the footage, it is no surprise that Lana chose not to have live elephants at her wedding. While I understand the need to defend animal rights, I don’t think that Maryse should have tried to change Lana’s wedding. Lana’s wedding day did not seem to suffer because of the lack of elephants though. However, I thought that there might not be a happy bride: on Lana’s wedding day because of the lack of one thing, a flower arch.
Lana kept insisting to Rusev that she had always wanted a flower arch and that her wedding day simply wouldn’t be complete without one. Lana became even more irate when Rusev rented a Lamborghini to use and their getaway car after the nuptials were over. She claimed that the Lamborghini rental cost more than the flower arch. Little did Lana know that Rusev was waiting to surprise her with a flower arch as she walked down the aisle.
I personally think that Lana is being a little too insistent on having her own way, but their wedding flower arch included, made for an excellent mid-season finale of Total Divas. I can’t wait to see what happens next!
In a conference call with reporters yesterday, Triple H addressed the situation where the WWE UK Championship tournament contestants were not allowed to wrestle during events which were being streamed on other streaming services deemed competition to the WWE Network.
Triple H admitted that there seems to be a lot of confusion and misinformation about the whole deal, saying that the talent signed were all signed with the intention of starting a UK-only weekly television show.
He said that everyone knew what they signed up for and what they were allowed and not allowed to do. Triple H said that they’re not banning them from wrestling at other independent events anywhere, but they cannot appear on television or streamed pay-per-views online.
The former WWE champion also said that the plan is to create this weekly show based in the United Kingdom but timing right now is not good. He said that to pull it off, they need to put several people on the ground there and once the television show takes off, there’s an idea to run non-televised live events around the country.
Kenny Omega has revealed that he’s reached a decision over his wrestling future – and he wants to stay with New Japan.
Speaking to Dave Meltzer and Bryan Alvarez on Wrestling Observer Radio, Omega revealed that although he has not yet come to terms, he will be flying over to Japan in mid-February to open contract talks to re-sign with New Japan Pro Wrestling.
Omega, whose match with Kazuchika Okada on January 4’s WrestleKingdom show drew mass acclaim, specifically stated that he won’t be in San Antonio this weekend, nor will be he appearing at the Royal Rumble. The current leader of the Bullet Club went on to say that he felt that New Japan needed him more than WWE’s “stacked” roster, and that “there’s a friend of his that didn’t sign with WWE this year in hopes they do something special together.”
Omega didn’t indicate how long he wished to be with New Japan for, other than saying that he envisaged staying with them for at least a year whilst he sorted out “unfinished business”.
It is worth noting that right now, Kenny Omega and his Bullet Club faction have been phased out of New Japan, thanks to the return of Minoru Suzuki and his Suzuki-gun faction earlier this month. It’s not likely that the Bullet Club being left off of New Japan’s upcoming tour had anything to do with Omega’s contract status, but it’ll be interesting to see how Kenny Omega and the Bullet Club factor into a packed New Japan roster in 2017.
The mid-season finale of season six of Total Divas featuring the wedding of Lana and Rusev drew 696,000 viewers, up 196,000 viewers from last week’s episode. Total Divas returns later in the fall for the second part of season six. (Ratings credit: Showbuzzdaily.com)

The Hollywood Reporter has a story about streaming giant Netflix purchasing the worldwide rights for the documentary Nobody Speak: Hulk Hogan, Gawker, and Trials of a Free Press.

Kenny Omega was brutally honest with the fans during a Q&A session promoted by 4 Front Wrestling in the United Kingdom when he was asked about the chances of him appearing at the Rumble.
“The most I can say right now, and this may disappoint some people, if…some of you guys are subscribers to the Network and you’re looking forward to something happening…or not happening on the 29th, I’m not sure if I can pull a rabbit out of the hat by that date. That’s all I can say for now,” Omega replied, noting that this was the most he has talked about this issue.
“But that doesn’t mean it’s impossible, I’m not saying anything. I’m just…that might be asking too much at this point in time,” he added, before telling fans that if he’s in it, he’s pretty sure he’s winning the whole thing.
The eighth and final match to the Royal Rumble card was announced last night on Smackdown Live.
The Smackdown women will be showcasing their talent in a six-woman tag team match featuring Becky Lynch, Nikki Bella, and Naomi taking on the Smackdown Women’s champion Alexa Bliss, the returning Mickie James, and Natalya.
The Rumble will have three women matches, two on the main pay-per-view card and one on the Kickoff show.
The mid-season finale of Total Divas season 6 airs tonight with episode 10 titled The Big Day, featuring the wedding of Lana and Rusev.
The synopsis for the episode reads, “Renee Young brings boyfriend, Dean Ambrose, home to meet her family and chaos ensues, the big wedding day for Lana and Rusev has finally arrived and some last minute disagreements bring emotions to a high, while Nikki discovers if she’s cleared to return to the WWE in time for the draft.”
22 WWE Superstars are now confirmed for the Royal Rumble after last night, Mojo Rawley from Smackdown entered his name in the match.
There are 13 Raw Superstars in the Rumble – Goldberg, Brock Lesnar, Big E, Kofi Kingston, Xavier Woods, Chris Jericho, Braun Strowman, Cesaro, Sheamus, Big Show, Sami Zayn, Big Cass, and Rusev.
Smackdown is so far represented by 8 Superstars – Baron Corbin, Dean Ambrose, The Miz, Dolph Ziggler, Bray Wyatt, Randy Orton, Luke Harper, and Mojo Rawley.
The Undertaker, who is not attached to any brand, is the other entrant.
The 22 spots, leaning heavily towards the Raw brand, leave 8 surprise entries who will not necessarily be non-WWE Superstars. There are rumors that some NXT and WWE United Kingdom Championship tournament competitors will be in the 30-man Rumble as well.
