Royal Rumble 2017 pay-per-view report

Welcome to the 2017 Royal Rumble live coverage. This is the first non-WrestleMania stadium show since, well, the 1997 Royal Rumble, which also took place from the Alamodome.

KICKOFF SHOW

Renee Young, Peter Rosenberg and WWE Hall of Famers Booker T and Jerry “The King” Lawler are on the panel today. This is Lawler’s first time back on the panel since the Survivor Series.

In the Kickoff matches, Becky Lynch, Nikki Bella, and Naomi defeated Alexa Bliss, Natalya, and Mickie James when Naomi pinned Bliss. New tag team champs were crowned as Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson defeated Cesaro and Sheamus for their first titles. And in the last Kickoff match, Nia Jax destroyed Sasha Banks and pinned her with the Samoan drop.

The stage and everything looks impressive being in a large stadium and WWE will probably announce a 50,000+ attendance.

With 10 minutes to go live on pay-per-view, San Antonio’s own Shawn Michaels came out to massive HBK chants. HBK lets everyone know that 20 years ago he regained the WWE title against Sid. Shawn wonders who’s gonna win the Rumble. Brock? Boos. Goldberg? Boos. Strowman? Boos. Undertaker? Cheers! Mr. WrestleMania then says it’s time to get the party started and if you’re not down with that, he got two words for you…

52,020 fans are inside the Alamodome per Michael Cole.

CHARLOTTE FLAIR VS BAYLEY (WWE RAW WOMEN’S TITLE MATCH)

Charlotte is undefeated in her pay-per-view title matches, 15-0 to be exact. The champion had the advantage for most of the match. The momentum shifted after Charlotte told Bayley that she’s “one of them” – referring to the crowd – and then started slapping her, which woke Bayley up. At one point, Bayley did her best Macho Man impression, and dropped the elbow from the top rope and covered Charlotte, but the champ kicked out in the last second. Charlotte started bleeding from the mouth and then delivered a moonsault, which Bayley met with two knees up and a cover for another close, close count. Charlotte recovers and then delivers the Natural Selection on the apron and covers Bayley for the pin, retaining the title.

WWE Network commercial for Holy Foley. This show is stupid. Not even Noelle Foley’s beauty can save this. The last 5 episode of season 1 airs tonight right after the Rumble.

KEVIN OWENS VS ROMAN REIGNS (WWE UNIVERSAL TITLE NO DQ MATCH)

The shark cage came down slowly from the rafters, complete with its own theme song. Yay. The champ came out first, followed by the challenger, who was booed by the San Antonio crowd for a change! Jericho and Owens attacked Reigns before Jericho was thrown in the cage by Reigns himself and hoisted up like a sexy piñata. Since this is a no disqualification match, the action immediately spilled on the outside. Owens got the chairs, Reigns got the table. Owens delivered a frog splash from the top rope and outside to a waiting Reigns laying on a table. Holy shit moment #1. Jericho had brass knuckles and dropped them to Kevin Owens, who hit the Superman Punch on Reigns, but Reigns kicked out at two. Reigns hit an impressive-looking Samoan Drop on a chair, but Kevin kicks out as well. Lots of close calls as Owens hits a stunner on Reigns, but Reigns survives. Owens, who earlier assembled a pyramid of chairs, ends up going through them after Reigns hit the Superman Punch and Owens crashed from the top rope. Reigns then delivers a power bomb through the announce table and puts Owens back in the ring for the spear. But Braun Strowman comes out and destroys the hell out of Roman Reigns, chokeslams him on the announce table, then hits a running powerslam through a table, and lets Owens pin Reigns to retain the title.

A long KFC commercial with Enzo and Cass airs. And I mean long commercial.

A video package on the statistics of the Royal Rumble is shown. Nice informative little video. No mention at all of Chris Benoit, who won the 2004 Royal Rumble! Hah.

Backstage segment with Stephanie McMahon and Mick Foley, who meet Shane McMahon and Daniel Bryan. Sami Zayn comes in to pick his Rumble number from the tumbler. Dean Ambrose also shows up. “Wake me when my music hits, boss,” Ambrose tells Bryan. Nice! Zayn picks #8. Ambrose didn’t care to open his.

RICH SWANN VS NEVILLE (WWE CRUISERWEIGHT TITLE MATCH)

The WWE Network International broadcast team was introduced. At least they were allowed in the country and not blocked by border patrol! Looks like they used the previous video package to tape up the ropes purple. Mauro Ranallo and Austin Aries join Corey Graves on the announce table. This match was a bit slow, and pretty much killed the crowd. A super kick by Swann on a diving Neville woke everyone up…for a bit. Neville won the Cruiserweight title after he made Rich Swann tap out. No Red Arrow finisher. The crowd was dead for the whole thing.

A Vudu commercial with The New Day airs. Who doesn’t like a good movie? Who? Who? Who? Vudu is a sponsor for the Royal Rumble. Vu-du rocks. Vu-du rocks.

AJ STYLES VS JOHN CENA (WWE CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH)

AJ Styles, the WWE champion, is out first. Kevin Owens was also out first for his match. I thought champs come out second. Oh well. The fans go along with the Smackdown announcer on his introduction to AJ Styles. Crowd is now on fire, with AJ Styles chants, and Let’s Go Cena chants. This was a great match that no text recap can do it justice. John Cena won the title, the 16th one matching Ric Flair, after three AAs. Seriously, one of the biggest matches ever, and even the crowd finally cheered for Cena. Cena hugged referee Charles Robinson after the match and then went in the crowd and put the WWE title on the shoulder of a little kid who was wearing the Make-A-Wish Foundation t-shirt. That, my friends, is class.

Well, good luck topping that!

ROYAL RUMBLE MATCH

WWE Hall of Famer Jerry “The King” Lawler joined Michael Cole and Corey Graves on commentary for the match, his first one in many, many months.

Entries were as follows: 1) Big Cass 2) Chris Jericho 3) Kalisto 4) Mojo Rawley 5) Jack Gallagher 6) Mark Henry 7) Braun Strowman 8) Sami Zayn 9) Big Show 10) Tye Dillinger 11) James Ellsworth 12) Dean Ambrose 13) Baron Corbin 14) Kofi Kingston 15) The Miz 16) Sheamus 17) Big E 18) Rusev 19) Cesaro 20) Xavier Woods 21) Bray Wyatt 22) Apollo Crews 23) Randy Orton 24) Dolph Ziggler 25) Luke Harper 26) Brock Lesnar 27) Enzo Amore 28) Goldberg 29) The Undertaker 30) Roman Reigns

The final four were Roman Reigns, Chris Jericho, Bray Wyatt, and Randy Orton. Reigns eliminated Chris Jericho, then Bray Wyatt, leaving him and Orton as the final two. Randy Orton then clotheslined Roman Reigns to eliminate him, winning the Royal Rumble match and a ticket to headline WrestleMania.

Randy Orton still the overwhelming favorite to win the Rumble, Undertaker in second

With a few hours to go for the start of the Royal Rumble pay-per-view, Randy Orton is still listed as the favorite to win the 30-man over-the-top rope match, with odds at 1/8.

No one is even remotely close to him at this point, suggesting that the plan of him winning is pretty solid. This could obviously change later in the day but the odds are overwhelmingly in his favor.

The Undertaker is the second favorite at 8/1, followed by Bill Goldberg and Finn Balor at 9/1, Strowman and Samoa Joe at 10/1, and Bray Wyatt at 12/1. Brock Lesnar is at 20/1 for the win, Dean Ambrose at 33/1, Kurt Angle at 40/1, and Triple H at 50/1. Kenny Omega is at 50/1 even though he doesn’t even work for WWE.

Live WWE event results from 01/28 in San Angelo, Texas

W-O reader Bob Wilson attended the Smackdown-brand non-televised event in San Angelo, Texas yesterday at the Foster Communications Coliseum and sent in these results.

The Usos defeated Heath Slater and Rhyno, then defeated Breenango, lost to American Alpha, and then American Alpha defeated Bray Wyatt and Luke Harper in a tag team gauntlet match; Kalisto defeated Curt Hawkins; Alexa Bliss defeated Becky Lynch to retain the Smackdown Women’s title; Dean Ambrose defeated The Miz to retain the Intercontinental title; Nikki Bella and Naomi defeated Natalya and Carmella; Dolph Ziggler defeated Apollo Crews; AJ Styles defeated Baron Corbin and John Cena in a triple threat match to retain the WWE World title.

Is Cena winning his 16th World title tonight? Betting odds for the 2017 Royal Rumble

If the bookies got it right, John Cena will tie Ric Flair’s record tonight with his 16 World championships as he’s at 1/6 odds of winning his match against AJ Styles, who is at 7/2 to retain. Kevin Owens is at 1/16 to retain the Universal title while Reigns is at 7/1 to win.

Charlotte Flair is also tipped to retain the Raw Women’s title – and her unbeaten PPV streak – at 1/20 while Bayley is at a distant 8/1 to win the title. Rich Swann’s reign as Cruiserweight champ is also looking to be over with 7/1 odds to retain and his challenger Neville at 1/16 as favorite to win.

Sheamus and Cesaro are slightly the favorites to retain the Raw Tag Team titles with odds at 8/11 while Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson are 1/1 to win the titles for the first time.

Odds are most likely to change later on in the day especially if the script is somehow leaked. These odds are accurate as of 8AM EST.

JBL posts screenshot tweet during Takeover….forgets to close nude search tab

During the Authors of Pain vs #DIY match last night at NXT Takeover: San Antonio, Smackdown commentator John “Bradshaw” Layfield posted a screenshot of Paul Ellering with the AOP saying how much he loves Paul Ellering and how he considers him one of the greatest of all time.

While there was nothing really wrong with that, JBL posted a screenshot of his Safari Mac browser, which had two other tabs opened – the USA Sevens Rugby website and a Google search for “Katka Kyptova nude.” He eventually deleted the tweet and reposted it with a cropped photo, leaving out the tabs.

Kyptova is 33-year-old female bodybuilder, personal trainer, and nutritional consultant from the Czech Republic.

Several WWE Twitter accounts hacked by OurMine

Several WWE Twitter accounts – including the ones of John Cena, Triple H, NXT, WrestleMania, WWE Network, WWE, and WWE Universe – were hacked late last night by elite hacker group OurMine, known for many hacks showing vulnerabilities in major systems.

The group posted, “Hey, it’s OurMine we are just testing your security, please contact us for more information, Thanks” along with their logo on all the hacked social media accounts.

Nothing malicious was posted and WWE eventually regained control of their accounts but it does leave the ones running their social media a bit red-faced.

In 2016, they OurMine group hacked the Twitter accounts of Wikipedia co-founder Jimmy Wales, Pokémon Go creator John Hanke, Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey, and Google CEO Sundar Pichai.

Triple H did come out, but then asked security to eject Rollins to piss off the fans.

2016 NXT Year-End Awards winners announced

The 2016 NXT Year-End Awards were announced during the NXT Takeover: San Antonio Kickoff show today.

Nigel McGuinness to join the NXT broadcast team instead of Corey Graves

Following a very successful debut during the WWE United Kingdom Championship tournament, Nigel McGuinness will be taking over Corey Graves’ spot on the NXT announce table.

Graves has been announcing NXT television shows ever since he had to retire from his in-ring career and started with NXT Takeover: R Evolution.  During the San Antonio Takeover Kickoff show, Graves announced that this would be his last NXT event and would be doing only Raw and 205 Live along with pay-per-views.

Graves did his last work on NXT alongside with Tom Phillips and another Takeover newcomer, Percy Watson.

Trump and Obama… 1000/1 to win the Royal Rumble tomorrow!

Two British popular betting websites – Paddy Power and Coral – have put the President of the United States Donald Trump and his predecessor Barack Obama at 1000/1 each to win the Royal Rumble tomorrow!

While both appeared on WWE television before and Trump is also a WWE Hall of Famer, we’d like to think that President Obama prefers to enjoy his holiday than being one of the 30 men tomorrow while President Trump seems like he’s busy signing one executive order after the other!

Other crazy bets offered include Floyd Mayweather, Ronda Rousey, Lex Luger, Jeff Hardy, Hulk Hogan, and many other former Superstars. People do actually bet on such options believe it or not. At least these bookmakers still didn’t list Chris Benoit!

NXT Takeover: San Antonio live on the WWE Network tonight

Live tonight from the Freeman Coliseum in San Antonio, Texas, WWE presents NXT Takeover: San Antonio exclusively on the WWE Network. The full card is as follows:

Shinsuke Nakamura vs Bobby Roode for the NXT title; Asuka vs Nikki Cross vs Billie Kay vs Peyton Royce in a fatal 4-way match for the NXT Women’s title; #DIY vs The Authors of Pain for the NXT Tag Team title; Eric Young vs Tye Dillinger; Roderick Strong vs Andrade “Cien” Almas; and No Way Jose vs Elias Samson in the pre-show.

WWE pulls Kurt Angle from Wrestlecon appearances

WWE has pulled Kurt Angle from appearing at Wrestlecon during WrestleMania weekend.

Angle was being advertised for Wrestlecon by Martin Damato of Tmart Promotions, and he announced the news on Facebook. “Unfortunately have some bad news. Kurt Angle had to cancel his appearances @wrestlecon due to obligations that we now all know. We are working very hard to find a replacement for Kurt Angle but not that many names are like Kurt Angle,” Damato wrote.

Angle is scheduled to do Axxess signings apart from headlining the Hall of Fame and then appear at WrestleMania. “We at Tmart Promotions wish Kurt the best on his journey back with the WWE and trust me as I spoke with Kurt a lot over the last year this is something he really wanted,” Damato continued.

Those who bought a ticket for a photo op and autograph with Kurt Angle will be getting refunded next week.

Nikki Bella promoted to Executive Producer on Total Divas

When Total Divas returns on E! in a few months, former Divas champion Nikki Bella will join the behind-the-scenes team and will be serving also as an Executive Producer.

“I am honored and excited to have been made an executive producer on Total Divas,” said Nikki in a statement. “As a pioneer of the show, I want to use my expertise and creativity not only in front of the cameras but behind as well and my goal is to continue to make Total Divas one of the best reality programs on television.”

Nikki has been an integral part of the show ever since Total Divas was created and even got a spinoff show along with her sister last year, Total Bellas. “I’m very focused on my journey to inspire and empower women and I look at this as another step forward in doing so,” Nikki said of her involvement in the coming episodes. “I am grateful to WWE, E! and Bunim Murray for giving me this amazing opportunity.”

WWE also announced that Total Divas will return on the air sooner than expected, with the second half of season six starting on Wednesday, April 5.

Six-woman tag team match moved to the Royal Rumble Kickoff show

The six-woman tag team match that was announced for the Royal Rumble pay-per-view was given the boot off the PPV part of the broadcast and will now be part of the Kickoff show.

The match – featuring Nikki Bella, Becky Lynch, and Noami taking on Alexa Bliss, Mickie James, and Natalya – was announced as a match on the card during Tuesday’s Smackdown.

Today, WWE.COM confirmed that the match was moved to the Kickoff show, which already had two matches with Sheamus and Cesaro vs Gallows and Anderson and Sasha Banks vs Nia Jax.

This will be a two-hour Kickoff show which will be hosted by Renee Young, Booker T, Shawn Michaels, Peter Rosenberg, and the returning Jerry “The King” Lawler. It starts at 5PM EST.

Impact rating for 01/26/2017

Yesterday’s episode of Impact which saw Bobby Lashley crowned as the new TNA champion drew 307,000 viewers, down 3,000 viewers from last week’s show. (Ratings credit: Showbuzzdaily.com)

Randy Orton the current favorite to win the 2017 Royal Rumble

Randy Orton is currently the bookies’ favorite to win the Royal Rumble, with odds at 10/11.

Orton surpassed other favorites over the past few days to be in the driving seat among online bookmakers. You could say that this year’s Rumble created some issues for those in the industry as unlike previous years there are no obvious winners or someone who is easily identified as the winner. The fact that there are still eight open and unannounced spots adds to the mystery.

The former WWE champion already won the Royal Rumble in 2009, eliminating the Big Show for the win. Orton entered that Rumble match at #8 and lasted just over 48 minutes.

The Royal Rumble will air on the WWE Network and fans who have not subscribed yet can get NXT Takeover: San Antonio, the Royal Rumble, and Elimination Chamber for free if they subscribe today. Go to http://w-o.it/wwentwrk to start your subscription.
