What will Ronda Rousey bring to the WWE?

The hottest rumor in professional wrestling became official in late January, when it was announced legendary UFC star Ronda Rousey would be joining the WWE.

Rousey in effect put her once promising MMA career behind her with the announcement that she would be signing a contract with the biggest professional wrestling company in the world.

The news came as less of a surprise after Rousey lost back-to-back title matches to ruin a perfect start to her mixed martial arts career.

For the longest time you had to choose where to bet carefully to snag real value ahead of Rousey fights. In the blink of an eye, the most dominant force in the female MMA scene was completely knocked off her pedestal and forced to think about her future.

Fans and experts alike had been either hoping or predicting Rousey would ditch the UFC for the bright lights of the WWE and that’s finally become a reality.

In fact, while Rousey’s deal with the WWE was probably fully agreed upon behind closed doors, the two parties will “officially” sign on the dotted line as Rousey is set to appear in the Elimination Chamber pay-per-view event.

Elimination Chamber, which arrives on February 25th, is an extension of the Raw brand, which Rousey is reportedly latching on with. Rousey made her commitment to WWE and Raw official in an appearance at the Royal Rumble and it was quite the spectacle:

This was just the start of what promises to be a brilliant WWE career for Rousey.

The UFC superstar is already set to appear at Elimination Chamber and could soon after headline the WWE’s SummerSlam event. From there, it’s anyone’s guess just how big of an impact Rousey will have in one the greatest sport genres in the world.

A marriage that has truly been over three years in the making is finally here, but as interesting as Rousey joining the WWE sounds, what does it really mean? More importantly, will Rousey be more than just a name?

To prepare for a whole lot of Rowdy Ronda Rousey in the near future, I’m breaking down precisely what Rousey brings to the table:

Star Power For Days

There is something to be said for the lack of polish Rousey has as an actor and performer. She was a stud in the brutal UFC, but it’s fair to say she has some work to do on “selling” to an audience.

That being said, I’m not even sure how much true work there is to do when everyone has already decided that they 100% love or hate her.

A personality that popular and polarizing has already ignited and divided a fan base so much that her reach and hype probably protects her and the WWE from her actually being a bad wrestling character.

In turn, even if Rousey comes off stale or forced, it might not matter.

Besides this, Rousey is going to have plenty of time to earn her keep, while her MMA following is going to help make her extremely relevant immediately.

It’s very rare that the WWE can just drop a new character in and get instant results. I think everyone already saw her staying power at the Royal Rumble and if she can improve at selling herself, the sky is really the limit.

She’s a real fighter

Not every former pro fighter turns into an elite WWE performer. You need star power, showmanship, the physique, personality, dedication and a budding fan base to really climb the ladder.

Rousey certainly has the fighting chops, though. There’s no getting around how poor Rousey’s exit from the “real” fighting scene was, but when she was at her best, there was literally nobody that could touch her.

While Rousey was never an elite striker, she has a wrestling background and knows how to work a canvas, both standing up and on the ground. Her experience as a fighter will only help her as she molds her new skill-set in the WWE, while it also immediately legitimizes her.

The fact that she’s been there, done that and has bumped heads with championship level talent in the UFC makes her a legit force to be reckoned with. The women of the WWE might not be scared, but they probably should be.

Floor queen

The Rowdy One was a dominant floor fighter in the UFC and successfully defended her bantamweight title six straight times.

While Rousey proved to have a fairly versatile skill-set in the toughest fighting league in the world, she was largely known for her floor game and Judo skills.

Her Olympic background helped transform her into one of the most dangerous floor assassins in the game and nobody can bat an eye at a remarkable nine submissions across 12 career wins.

The point? Rousey doesn’t just come in with a big name and marketability. She also comes in with a distinct shtick.

Rousey can work with a plethora of canvas moves and may even bring her coined armbar to the WWE as her “finisher”. Just as importantly, though, Rousey’s uncanny ability to react and adapt to other fighters on the fly could also be a trademark of her Rowdy persona.

She’s not scared

I know this is the WWE and it’s notorious for not being “real” fighting, but anyone who watches this sport and suggests these people aren’t putting their lives on the line simply isn’t paying attention.

Rousey already did this at a higher level, so she won’t be afraid to pull out all the stops. Even deeper, her character will come in without any fraudulent cracks in the armor and she won’t back down from anyone.

Taking one look at Rousey’s entrance at Royal Rumble, you can see an expressive individual that seems genuinely excited to be part of the WWE family. Rousey may end up channeling this combination of pride, joy and bravery into becoming one of the best WWE fighters we’ve ever seen.

Overall, Rousey has a lot to offer and this is a very exciting time in the WWE. There are still some amazing characters in the lineup, but the WWE has grown stale in some regards and spicing things up with a new character that people are still familiar with is an amazing move for the company’s overall brand.

It remains to be seen precisely what Rousey will do and how she’ll do it. However, on paper, she brings a ton to the table and could potentially exceed the lofty expectations she and the WWE are currently setting themselves up for.

Remembering the “Texas Tornado” Kerry Von Erich 25 years after his suicide

Today marks the 25th anniversary of the death of one of professional wrestling’s biggest stars, Kerry Von Erich, who was also known as the Texas Tornado.

Von Erich killed himself with a single gunshot to the heart with a .44 caliber gun on February 18, 1993, on his father’s ranch in Texas. His suicide was the culmination of a lot of injuries and drug, painkillers, and alcohol problems that dented his promising wrestling career.

In June 1986, Von Erich was involved in a horrific motorcycle accident which led to the amputation of his right foot. Whenever you saw him in the ring, he was wrestling with a prosthesis, something that to this day not a lot of fans are aware of. He kept his amputation a secret throughout his career, even from most wrestlers he worked with.

His life went in a downward spiral after the accident and was arrested a couple of times. When he violated probation and was set to get jail time, he ended his life. Two of his brothers also committed suicide before him and many believe that the family is jinxed. There’s only one surviving member of the Von Erich family, and that is Kevin Von Erich.

Kerry wrestled for the NWA, WCCW, USWA, and WWE, winning several titles along the way. His WWE career led him to the Intercontinental title, a title he won from Mr. Perfect at SummerSlam 1990. He was released from the company in August 1992.

His feud and matches with the Fabulous Freebirds and the one with Ric Flair remain some of the best the sport of professional wrestling has ever seen.

Von Erich has two daughters, Hollie Brooke and Lacey. Lacey wrestled for TNA and was part of The Beautiful People for a year.

Named The Saraya Store, it will feature merchandise from her new brand that sport her real name. This is a non-WWE venture from the young British star. But with the store located in Anaheim and WWE in town on Monday, it was the perfect day to set the grand opening on February 26.

That means that it’s back to one pay-per-view per month moving forward, although the length of each pay-per-view will probably increase to four hours instead of three to accommodate all the matches.

The pay-per-view calendar post-WrestleMania sees Backlash on May 6, Money In The Bank on June 17, Extreme Rules on July 15, SummerSlam on August 19, Hell In A Cell on September 16, TLC on October 21, Survivor Series on November 18, and Clash of Champions on December 16.

Payback, Great Balls of Fire, Battleground, and No Mercy were all dropped from the schedule moving forward.

Hundreds of floor tickets still available for WrestleMania 34

Hundreds of floor seats are still available for WrestleMania, with six sections only about 25% full, two roughly 70% full, and six others close to being 100% full.

The Mercedes-Benz Superdome has been configured to have 14 floor sections and the ones which are configured to be seated at an angle are the ones which are having more problem selling. The two sections on each side of the aisle are at approximately 70% full with a few ringside seats also available. Those seats are selling for a whopping $9,000 each on Ticketmaster. The section facing the camera and the one where the cameras will be are pretty much full.

The rest of the Superdome looks full, with only some pockets available in the corners of the south side of the stadium. WWE has less than two months to move more floor tickets before the show takes place on April 8.

SummerSlam 2018 collectors ticket features apparent roster brand changes

The collectors ticket for this year’s SummerSlam might be a spoiler for an upcoming draft that will see some changes coming to both brands.

The 3D ticket features Braun Strowman, Naomi, The Usos, Charlotte, Roman Reigns, Shinsuke Nakamura, and Ronda Rousey on one side in front of a red background and then if you tilt it, it reveals The New Day, Randy Orton, Samoa Joe, Seth Rollins, AJ Styles, and Sasha Banks on a blue background.

Another draft is rumored to be taking place following WrestleMania 34. If that is the case, Naomi, The Usos, Charlotte, and Nakamura would be moving to the red side while Joe, Rollins, and Banks would be going over to blue.

You can see the ticket below.

Rich Swann released from WWE

Rich Swann has been let go from WWE three weeks after all charges against him stemming from a December arrest were dropped.

“Rich Swann and WWE have mutually agreed to part ways as of today, February 15, 2018. WWE wishes Swann the best in all of his future endeavors,” a statement on WWE.COM read.

Police dropped all charges against Swann citing insufficient evidence after he was arrested in early December and charged with battery and false imprisonment following an incident with his wife. The original police reports states that Swann was critiquing his wife’s performance after a show in downtown Gainesville just hours earlier. He began to get angry with her and she got scared and got out of the car on the way to home. “The Def stopped his vehicle in the middle of traffic and the vic jumped out. The Def gave chase and yelled for the Vic to get back in the car. The Vic told the Def she did not want to get back in the car and she continued to walk away,” the report states.

Swann was supposed to wrestle Enzo Amore for the Cruiserweight title before he was arrested.

Former star Billy Jack Haynes claims he witnessed two murders of a cold case 30 years ago

Former WWE star Billy Jack Haynes is claiming that he was a witness to the three-decade murder of the ‘Boys on the Tracks’ in Alexander, Arkansas, and is now coming forward with his story and what he saw.

Two teenagers – Kevin Ives and Don Henry – were brutally killed on August 23, 1987 and the case went cold after the killer or killers were never found.

Now, the local KARK 4 News NBC affiliate in the area is reporting that Haynes has reached out to the parents of one of the boys and teamed up with an investigator to raise money to fund a private investigation into the murders.

“I come with no hidden voice. I come to you straight face-to-face, because this is reality, man,” Haynes said in a video posted on YouTube. “Don’t hide nothing!”

Haynes, who apart from being a WWE star also transported and trafficked cocaine through the United States, said that while on one of his jobs as a security for a drug money drop, he witnessed the two murders. Haynes said that they were murdered by people who were working for the same Arkansas “criminal politician” he was providing security services for.

“I’m standing here putting my life on the line, telling you that I could very well be killed,” added the 64-year-old in the video. “They have to be taken down.”

You can read the full story on ArkansasMatters.com.

Three years ago, Haynes sued WWE for “egregious mistreatment of its wrestlers for its own benefit, as well as its concealment and denial of medical research and evidence concerning traumatic brain injuries suffered by WWE wrestlers.”
