Dwayne Johnson’s live-action Moana movie disappoints in the box office

The live-action adaptation of the 2016 hit Disney animated movie Moana failed to replicate the box office opening weekend success of its two prequels.

Boxofficemojo.com is reporting that the movie, featuring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson in the leading role, drew $43 million domestically and an additional $52 million in international receipts, for a total of $95 million worldwide.

The movie still landed in the #1 spot on the box office chart for the weekend.

Disney had projected to do at least $60 million in the United States and $130 million worldwide in its opening weekend. Estimates now show that the movie is set to lose over $100 million based on the approximately $250 million budget it had.

The original Moana in 2016 had $56.6 million in the U.S. and Moana 2 followed with a $139.7 million opening weekend in the U.S. alone. Both movies ended up doing $643 million and over $1 billion worldwide respectively.
