Shayna Baszler earns Smackdown Women’s title shot at Clash at the Castle
Liv Morgan’s love affair with the crowd seems to have ended last night on Smackdown as fans chanted “you tapped out” at her while she was trying to explain the actions from SummerSlam.
But the fans were going to be the least of Liv Morgan’s problems as the night progressed because a new number one contender for the Smackdown Women’s title was decided on the show and will take on Morgan in Cardiff next month at Clash at the Castle.
Rousey’s best friend and former NXT Women’s champion Shayna Baszler will get the opportunity to seek some revenge on Morgan after she won a gauntlet match on the show to earn her spot.
Raquel Rodriguez was the star of the match by eliminating Sonya Deville, Xia Li, Shotzi, and Natalya in succession before getting pinned by Baszler. Deville vs Aliyah kicked off the match.
This is the second match announced for the Clash event, joining Reigns vs McIntyre for the title at the top of the card.

Jon Moxley vs Mance Warner, Eliminator Match
Backstory: Warner won a match at Ric Flair’s Last Match PPV
William Regal joined on comms. Warner got a brief promo – not a great one – pre-match.
In a rush to introduce himself, Mox met him in the aisle where they fought around ringside with chops, punches and a snap suplex by the champ through a chair. JR was on his ‘they know how to fall’ ‘ish again.
The setting changed, the action didn’t: more chops and blows to the face leading to some technical wrestling via a dragon screw into a figure 4 from Moxley. Brutal shots to the face which you could both see and hear from the champ saw the action spill back outside, Warner responding by flinging Mox into the steps, crotching then clotheslining him off the rails, a DDT on the steps following as the break beckoned.
Post-break, Mox was brought down by a chop-block, then a spinebuster, kicking out twice at 2, double-birding the challenger as the obligatory blood made its entrance. Looking for toys, Mance had a chair punched into his face as a ‘we want tables’ chant began, as did the blood on Warner’s forehead.
The action nearing its end, Moxley struck with an elbow suicida, superplex, hammer-and-anvil, bite to the bloody forehead, Warner rebounded with a clothesline, ‘kick your head in’, piledriver, ‘kick your head in’, Mance passed out in the choke.
Much like Wednesday’s main event, the likely outcome became all-but guaranteed by the match stipulation.

Konosuke Takeshita vs Ryan Nemeth
Backstory: Takeshita needs one of those ‘win’ things to half-justify his ROH title shot
Nice pop for Takeshita, continuing as he flew out the box with a diving shoulder-block. This guy just has a knack for upping pace and intensity, the crowd loved it. Huge blue thunder bomb, a violent driving knee, 1,2,3. Turns out Avalon was hungry too; Takeshita fed him a knee.

Best Friends/Cassidy promo, gonna go for the trios titles. Danhausen joined in with their ‘hands in, ‘trios’ on three’.
Madison Rayne vs Leila Gray
Backstory: Rayne’s debut, had words w Jade Cargill on ‘a very special’ Dark Elevation
Not sure of Rayne’s exact age – do know I was a lot younger when she was with the Beautiful People – but she looks great. Has a nice presence too. Hathaway’s dancing to Gray’s entrance was superb.
A series of standing switches ended after a hard shot to the face from Leila, Rayne kept things slow with pinning predicaments and arm-drags, Stokely threw a tantrum on the stairs, distracting Rayne – not sure why – who took a spill off the apron. And what does the heel getting the advantage mean EVERY SINGLE TIME? Ads.
A wicked enziguri from Madison brought us back, a northern lights suplex bagged a two count, Leila one of her own with a side effect. Weak looking strikes before a dead crowd ended with Cross Raynes for the victory. The crowd did count along with the pin.
Post-match, Jade came out. ‘This is my show’ (not sure why anyone would want to admit to that). Challenged Rayne to meet her on Weds. Kiera Hogan snuck in but was hit with another Cross Raynes.
The match was very slow.

Swerve in our Glory vs Tony Nese & Josh Woods, Street Fight
Backstory: Nese & co have been trying to get Swerve fired, Woods laid-out Lee last week
Pre-match, even Keith Lee acknowledged that their opponents would be a ‘footnote’ en-route to a proper opponent. Almost makes you wonder why the match is happening. Sterling did at least tell us a bit about Josh Woods.
Starting off with all four brawling around ringside, Lee allowed Woods several shots, then dropped him with the double palm-strike. Nese flung his protein powder at Lee but then ate it, literally and figuratively, when Strickland blasted him with a kick to the face. Lee seemed to legit wash his eyes out. While doing so, Woods drove Strickland into the steps with a sick-looking twisting suplex.
Returning, the heels had Swerve perched precariously on the apron, above a table set-up at ringside. Lee fought them off, then broke up a pin after Nese blistered Strickland with a kick, afterwards running through both heels in the ring, flinging Nese out of the corner into Woods. Impressive sequence, crowd very into the big man.
Distracted by Sterling and double-DDT’d onto a chair, Swerve made the save with a 450 off the top onto all three. A table snuck-in, set-up by Nese, who was dropped via knee from Swerve, only to be struck from behind by Sterling. Meanwhile, Limitless took out both heels on the outside, leaving Sterling alone with Strickland laid-out across the table. Heading up, quickly discovering his mistake, Smart Mark was intercepted by Lee, eating wood as he landed.
A crazy superkick-aided German suplex off the apron through a table followed by Woods on Lee. With both big guys taken out, Swerve soared, nailing a Swerve Stomp on Nese for the popular victory.
Anyway, smart on AEW’s part responding to the ratings drop by using their ace-in-the-hole Tony Nese in the main event.
Fun match though.

Overall impressions
Anyone not predict the winner of every match beforehand? Anyone?
Around this time last year AEW was hot: Punk, Bryan, Cole, NY debut. They drew over a million viewers several times in July/Aug for Dynamite, topped a million both nights of Fyter Fest, and did about 1.4 following All Out. Twelve months on and it feels as if momentum is shifting.
There’s a buzz about WWE. People who stopped watching are watching again (and I’m not even one of them). Hunter enjoys the fans’ goodwill. If HHHe regularly gives fans what they want – and all the signs suggest he will – it won’t be long before more of them stop thinking about AEW as the cute alternative and start noticing its flaws.
The TV hasn’t felt urgent for months. It’s rarely bad; often miss-able. Not enough happens to hook viewers. Essentially it’s ‘here’s a bunch of solid to very good wrestling matches with obvious outcomes.’ Battle of the Belts is Saturday and again seemed to catch them by surprise: they had nothing ready involving any of their champions because none of them are involved in any current feuds (excepting the world title which they’ve saved for Dynamite).
And the epitome of these problems is Rampage. To paraphrase a famous Canadian, it’s where ‘you’d put the hose.’

WWE Women’s Tag Team titles coming back, tournament kicks off on Raw
With the rumored news that Sasha Banks and Naomi have agreed to return to WWE, the company announced yesterday that there will be a tournament to crown new WWE Women’s Tag Team champions starting this coming Monday on Raw.
The titles have been dormant and vacant since mid-May when both Banks and Naomi walked out of WWE before an episode of Monday Night Raw.
Michael Cole had announced on the Smackdown following the walk out that there would be a tournament beginning but that never happened and Vince McMahon scrapped the idea and the titles altogether.
But a new regime means different ideas and the WWE Women’s Tag Team titles will live to see another day.
The question is: will the former champions return as surprise entrants? Or will they target the new champions to claim what is theirs?

It is announced that a tournament will start Monday on Raw to fill the vacant Women’s Tag Team championship.
The Bloodline is out next and Roman asks for acknowledgement and then says they hate Brock Lesnar, respect Brock Lesnar but they hate him because he tried to kill the Wiseman and they have no idea when they will get their counsel back.
Roman is then interrupted by Drew McIntyre who asks the crowd if they wanted him to tear apart the Bloodline right here tonight. Before Drew could move, music hit and out comes the returning Karrion Kross who attacks Drew and leaves him laying on the floor as the Bloodline looks on. Scarlett has returned as well and sits the hourglass in the ring as we go off the air.
Karrion Kross and Scarlett return on Smackdown
Doomsday has returned to WWE as Karrion Kross and Scarlett made their return on Smackdown last night, quickly leaving their mark in the main event picture.
Kross and Scarlett, who were released from their WWE deals in November 2021, made a surprise appearance during the closing segment of the show last night. As McIntyre was addressing Roman Reigns, Kross’ NXT theme song hit and Scarlett appeared at the top of the stage.
With McIntyre’s face turned around, Kross attacked from behind, leaving him motionless. He then turned around and had a stare down with champion Roman Reigns as Scarlett put an hourglass on the apron and turned it around. Tick. Tock.
The former NXT champion, who was booked very strongly in the black and gold brand, had an underwhelming short stint on the main roster and was given a gladiator gimmick, losing his first match against Jeff Hardy in a few minutes.
Dynamite rating for 08/03/2022
Dynamite this week on TBS drew 938,000 viewers, down 38,000 viewers from last week’s broadcast. The show did a 0.32 in the 18-49 demo, down just 0.01 from last week, and reclaimed the number one spot on the top 50 cable chart for the night. The company is loading up next week’s show, headlined by Jericho vs Mox for the AEW World title, so that alone should bump up the viewership. (Ratings credit: Showbuzzdaily.com)
Gauntlet match to determine new #1 contender for Smackdown Women’s title tonight
The number one contender for the Smackdown Women’s title will be decided tonight in a gauntlet match.
Raquel Rodriguez, Natalya, Xia Li, Shotzi, Sonya Deville, Shayna Baszler, and Aliyah will be involved in the match and the winner will get her title shot at the Clash at the Castle premium live event on September 3 in Cardiff, Wales.
In other segments announced for tonight’s Smackdown, Undisputed WWE Universal champion Roman Reigns will also be in the house to address his Clash at the Castle opponent Drew McIntyre while Shinsuke Nakamura takes on Ludwig Kaiser for a shot at Gunter’s Intercontinental title.
With the Clash event now less than a month away, the focus will solely be building towards that show for the next few weeks.

Bound For Glory 2022 set for a Friday night in Albany, New York
Impact Wrestling announced that Bound For Glory this year will take place on Friday, October 7 from Albany, New York.
Originally, Impact advertised the show for Saturday, October 8, but there’s a WWE premium live event on that day so it was inevitable that the show would be moved. This will be the first time that Impact will present it’s pay-per-view on a Friday night.
While the location of Albany was announced, there was no hint as to which venue will host Impact’s biggest show of the year.
Ric Flair’s Last Match draws big numbers in PPV buys and gate money
Ric Flair has proved to be still the man when it comes to drawing an audience as Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer is reporting that his Last Match pay-per-view drew nearly half a million dollars in gate money and nearly 29,000 pay-per-view buys.
The figures puts Jim Crockett Presents: Ric Flair’s Last Match show promoted by Starrcast as the second most successful indie show in modern day wrestling behind All In in 2018.
Close to 7,000 fans packed the Nashville Municipal Auditorium on Sunday night for a total gate money of $448,502. In addition, Ric Flair’s Last Match did around 25,000 buys through PPV.COM and FITE.TV and around another 4,000 through traditional pay-per-view providers.
“Never underestimate yourself! You are capable of more than you know! WOOOOO,” tweeted Flair today following the publication of the impressive numbers.
A card full of wrestlers from different promotions was headlined by Flair teaming up with Andrade to take on Jeff Jarrett and Jay Lethal.

Glenn “Kane” Jacobs re-elected as Mayor of Knox County
WWE Hall of Famer Glenn ”Kane” Jacobs was re-elected as Mayor of Knox County and proclaimed victory after he led his opponent by over 4,000 votes with 63% counted according to the Knoxville News Sentinel.
Jacobs was in the race against Debbie Helsley from the Democratic party. While he identifies himself as a Libertarian, Jacobs runs on the Republican ticket.
“THANK YOU Knox County for electing me to serve a second term as your mayor,” Jacobs wrote in a tweet. “I am so grateful for the support you have shown me and my family throughout my campaign for re-election, and will continue to do all I can to serve you to the best of my ability.”
In comments after being re-elected, Jacobs promised to continue to work hard for the brightest future of Knox County.
Jacobs last appeared on WWE television at SummerSlam in Nashville where he announced the attendance and then set the ring posts on fire in typical Kane fashion.
Bischoff says he’s excited for new WWE regime and slams AEW as “competition”
WWE Hall of Famer and former WCW President Eric Bischoff said he was excited for Stephanie McMahon and Triple H taking the reins of WWE moving forward, even though he’s not close with either of them.
Speaking with Ryan Satin of FOX Sports on Out of Character, Bischoff said that he’s not tight with Triple H, although they do get along and it can be very pleasant and “borderline fun” when they’re in a room together, but they don’t hang out with each other.
“He doesn’t drink anyway,” Bischoff joked. “But if he did, we didn’t go out for drinks. None of that. We don’t chat, so I don’t know him personally.”
Bischoff noted that he did get to work with Triple H for a few months back in 2019 when he was Executive Director of Smackdown and he’s confident that both he and Stephanie will do great things for WWE moving forward.
Meanwhile, Bischoff labeled AEW as “not competition” to WWE no matter how much Tony Khan wants to believe it.
“You’re in the same business, Tony, but that’s not the same thing as being in competition,” Bischoff said. “You’re not taking market share, Tony, you’re just in the same business.”
Bischoff compared AEW to a “little mom and pop hamburger stand on the corner” while they say they’re in competition with Arby’s.
The former WCW President appeared multiple times on AEW but it sounds like he has no interest in going back any time soon!
AEW returning to D.C. for two live broadcasts in October
AEW today announced that it will be returning to Washington, D.C. for a live Dynamite on October 5 and live Rampage on October 7.
The October 7 Rampage will also have the Battle of the Belts IV episode taped which will then air the next day on TNT.
AEW held their first-ever Dynamite at the Capital One Arena in D.C. but the company will return to the smaller Entertainment & Sports Arena located on St. Elizabeths East Campus, in Congress Heights. AEW held TV tapings here in the same location in January of this year.
Tickets for these shows go on sale Friday, August 12 at 10AM ET.
NXT rating for 08/02/2022
This week’s NXT drew 649,000 viewers, up 49,000 viewers from last week’s broadcast. This was the most-watched NXT episode since June 7 and the fourth best number of 2022 so far.
