5 common health issues in professional wrestling

Professional wrestling is a trendy industry with a global following. In fact, its promotional counterpart, World Wrestling Entertainment, has amassed a 1.1 billion revenue in 2021 alone.

But what many don’t see behind the scenes are the immense health risks of being a professional wrestler. They are often required to perform stunts that may lead to health concerns and constantly put their bodies through strenuous activity. As a result, they are more prone to injuries and health problems.

So how do professional wrestlers stay fit despite the health risks? Here are some challenges wrestlers face and how they overcome them:

Acute stress reactions

The wrestlers are constantly under pressure to perform, which can make them feel overwhelmed and stressed out. They may suffer from anxiety, insomnia, and irritability. This mental health condition is a common occurrence in professional wrestling.

If not appropriately managed, acute stress reactions can lead to more severe conditions such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). PTSD can negatively affect a person’s mental and physical health.

Wrestlers typically deal with acute stress reactions by seeking counseling or therapy. This practice allows them to speak to someone about their feelings and learn coping mechanisms. Guidance from a professional can help wrestlers know how to manage their stress better. This way, they can continue to perform without suffering long-term health effects.

Muscle strains and tears

The constant physical demands placed on the wrestlers’ bodies can lead to their muscles being overworked and strained. It can cause pain, swelling, and reduced range of motion. Without the proper treatment, muscle strains and tears can result in permanent damage.

So, how do wrestlers deal with these common injuries? They typically receive immediate medical attention to assess the extent of the muscle injury. After that, they might be placed on a wrestling hiatus to allow their body time to rest and heal.

Depending on the injury, wrestlers might have to undergo physical therapy or even surgery. These treatments can help wrestlers recover from their injuries and get back to performing as soon as possible.

Joint dislocation

The high-impact nature of the sport puts the wrestlers at risk of suffering from joint dislocations. It can happen when a wrestler lands awkwardly or gets hit with a hard object. Joint dislocations can be extremely painful and may require surgery to correct.

Many wrestlers try to prevent joint dislocations by wearing protective gear. This gear can help cushion the blow and reduce the risk of injury. In some cases, though, it might not be enough to prevent an injury from happening. If a wrestler does suffer from a joint dislocation, they will likely receive medical attention right away.

After the joint is put back into place, the wrestler might have to rest and avoid physical activity for some time. This way, the joint can heal properly and reduce the risk of further injury.

Concussions

Constant physical contact between the wrestlers means that there is a risk of concussions happening. Concussions can cause symptoms such as headaches, dizziness, nausea, and vomiting.

Some concussions may require hospitalization for treatment. In severe cases, concussions can lead to long-term health effects such as memory loss and problems with mental function.

To prevent concussions, wrestlers often wear protective gear. This gear can help reduce the impact of a blow to the head and prevent concussions from happening.

When a concussion does occur, the wrestler will likely receive immediate medical attention. They might be treated with ice or given medication to help with the symptoms. And once the concussion has healed, the wrestler will need to take it easy for a while before returning to physical activity.

Broken tooth

While mouthguards can help protect teeth, they are not always enough to prevent them from being broken. In some cases, a tooth might get knocked out entirely. It can happen if a wrestler gets hit in the mouth with a hard object or if they land on their face. This part is where digital dentistry comes in.

Digital dentistry 3D printing is an emerging technology starting to make its name in the dental industry. This technology can help create accurate impressions necessary for custom-fitted mouthguards. These mouthguards can help protect teeth from being broken or knocked out.

On the other hand, if a tooth does get broken or knocked out, the wrestler can use 3D printing to create a replacement tooth. This tooth can be made to match the wrestler’s natural teeth and will function just like a real one.

Although digital dentistry is not yet widely available, it will likely become more common. This technology can help wrestlers protect their teeth and maintain their winning smiles.

Professional wrestling is a physically demanding sport that puts the wrestlers at risk of sustaining injuries. As a result of these factors, professional wrestlers are susceptible to several health issues. But with the above knowledge, you can understand how professional wrestlers stay fit despite health risks.

November 25 episode of Rampage airing at 4PM EST

The November 25 episode of Rampage on TNT will air at 4PM EST instead of 10PM EST due to two NHL games airing on the same network back-to-back.

Bobby Fish wins first boxing match on Mayweather vs Deji PPV undercard

Current Impact star Bobby Fish won a boxing match today against Boateng Prempeh in the undercard for Mayweather vs Deji in Dubai, UAE.

The event, airing on pay-per-view from the Coca-Cola Arena, saw Fish finish his opponent via TKO in the second round. This was Fish’s first professional boxing fight.

At one point, Fish thought he might be in a wrestling ring as he picked up his opponent and seemed to be going for a suplex before the referee stepped in!

Fish, who was not re-signed to an AEW deal this past Summer, is now part of the Impact Wrestling roster. The former Undisputed Era member even challenged CM Punk to a real fight following the All Out brawl.

Fan throws drink at Scarlett during live event, police eject multiple people out

Multiple individuals got ejected from their seats at the non-televised live event in Peoria last night after one person threw their drink at Scarlett.

Scarlett, who was at ringside accompanying her husband Karrion Kross for his match against Drew McIntyre, received a surprise shower and obviously was not happy about it.

She alerted security about the incident and security tried to eject the fan from the seat. But after multiple attempts failed, police were called in and a group of people were taken out after reinforcements came.

“As a classy woman from Chicago, I’m not surprised that something like this would happen in Peoria,” Scarlett tweeted after the incident. “PS. To the granny who threw the drink, your booze was as cheap as your hairdo.”

Shotzi gets Smackdown Women’s title shot at Survivor Series

With the new regime in charge, the Survivor Series will no longer be a Raw vs Smackdown, champion vs champion affair and will return to regular matches plus the WarGames match.

The Smackdown Women’s title will be on the line at the show as Shotzi will get her chance to dethrone champion Ronda Rousey.

Shotzi yesterday won a number one contenders match on Smackdown, defeating Sonya Deville, Raquel Rodriguez, Liv Morgan, Xia Li, and Lacey Evans to earn the shot at Rousey.

Unfortunately for Shotzi, the night didn’t end well for her as she was attacked by Shayna Baszler in a backstage segment and was left choked out. The two wrestle next week on Smackdown.

Impact’s Steve Maclin and Deonna Purrazzo get married

Impact Wrestling stars Steve Maclin and Deonna Purrazzo tied the knot two days ago on November 10.

Maclin and Purrazzo got engaged earlier this year in February and got married at Hewitt Oaks in Bluffton, South Carolina with Hurricane Nicole in the background!

The wedding ceremony was held outside but that did not but a damper on things as umbrellas and raincoats helped cover guests from the rain.

Several co-workers were in attendance including Matt Cardona and Chelsea Green, Tasha Steelz, Britt Baker, and Wendy Choo. Baker and Choo even posted a photo of the two together doing each other’s hand sign.

Two advance in the Smackdown World Cup, more matches next week

Two men advanced in the Smackdown World Cup last night on Smackdown and two more matches will take place on next week’s broadcast.

Santos Escobar of Legado del Fantasma was the first one to advance in the tournament after he defeated Shinsuke Nakamura while Braun Strowman later defeated Jinder Mahal.

Next week’s Smackdown will have Butch vs Sami Zayn and Ricochet vs Mustafa Ali in the remaining first round matches.

The winner of the Smackdown World Cup will earn an Intercontinental title shot against Gunther.

Bloodline and Brawling Brutes with McIntyre end Smackdown with big brawl

Last night on Smackdown we got a glimpse of the men’s WarGames match at the Survivor Series as The Bloodline and The Brawling Brutes ended Smackdown with a massive brawl.

While not officially announced yet, the men’s WarGames will feature all five members of The Bloodline although Sami Zayn was missing from last night’s broadcast.

Smackdown ended with Reigns and the rest of his family gloating in the ring before they were interrupted by Butch and Holland. The two said they’re sick of the Bloodline and they brought backup with them – Sheamus!

Sheamus, who’s been out for a few weeks, returned and a brawl followed. Still outnumbered, the Brutes were joined by Drew McIntyre to make it a four on four affair.

The WarGames match will be a five on five match so with the addition of Zayn to the Bloodline, another member will be added to their opposition.

Sarah Logan returns to WWE with the Viking Raiders

Sarah Logan became the latest released star to return as WWE continues to bolster up their women’s division. Logan returned on Smackdown last night, accompanying the Viking Raiders to destroy Hit Row and Legado del Fantasma.

The former Riott Squad member was let go from her contract in April 2020 in the usual post-WrestleMania firing spree. During her time away from the ring, she became pregnant and gave birth to a baby boy in February 2021. Logan is married to Erik of the Viking Raiders.

Logan made a surprise appearance at the 2022 women’s Royal Rumble match as well, her only WWE appearance since she was let go.

The Viking Raiders have also been out for a few months after Erik had a foot injury. Vignettes have been airing for the past few weeks hyping up their return.

Rampage TV report for 11/11/2022

Arena: Agganis Arena

City: Boston, MA

Last Week’s Rating: 455,000 overall; 0.14 in 18-49 demo

Welcomed by JR, we were quickly hit with Christian Cage’s music, Tony & Excalibur chiming in to acknowledge the crowd’s boos.  Luchasaurus quickly followed.

Jungle Boy’s Challenge for Christian & Luchasaurus

Footage aired of JB & Saurus trying to take each other out as Jungle Boy made his entrance.  Cage quickly took the mic and recalled beating Jungle Boy in ten seconds.  They were done with him until JB cost Luchasaurus his title shot last week.

Jungle Boy responded that while he’d cost them a match, they’d cost him everything: friendship, three years of his life…  They keep stacking the odds against him, so he’s gonna stack the odds against himself, by challenging Saurus inside a steel cage at Full Gear.

Christian accepted, because they weren’t gonna get rid of him til they finished him for good.  ‘Cheap Heat’ Christian Cage, after bashing the locals, made a bunch of references to Jungle Boy’s mum and dead father.  If you have to go there, you’ve already failed.

Luchasaurus chokeslammed his former friend onto a propped-up steel chair.  Really bad landing on his neck.

…..

Lexi Nair with Death Triangle.  Pac interrupted Rey to explain to both he and Penta that there’s a reason they aren’t double champions.  They have to be smart and take every advantage they can, ‘by any means necessary’, tapping the belt with his hammer in time with the words.

Brian Cage vs Dante Martin, Eliminator Tournament 1st Rnd

Backstory: Winner will face Ricky Starks/Lance Archer in semis

It took them this long to tell us the Starks/Archer match has been rearranged due to Archer’s attack on the former (they released it online earlier but that won’t make a dent in the tv audience).  That should’ve been the first thing said when the show started.

Predictably, this began with Dante looking to use his speed, but being caught in a fallaway slam position and bench-pressed.  Slipping out, he fired forearms which staggered the big guy but didn’t knock him down, until a dropkick sent the bigger man outside.

A very scripted looking tope (it was basically in slow motion) ended with Dante being snatched out the air and dropped on the outside via brainbuster.

Cage almost bagged a three count as we returned, stopping to jaw at the crowd, Dante crawling around, snatched up for a DVD which he countered into a ddt, leaving both down.  Though Cage was quicker to his feet, a flurry of forearms from Dante left Cage staggered but an irish whip was a bad idea: Cage reversed it, Dante flipped out to the apron, enziguri, cross body from the top, two slaps of the mat.

A tired crowd getting into it.

Cage blocked a nose dive but was sent through the ropes, hit with a springboard cross body to the outside, splash off the top, count of three.  Dante well on top.

Lastly, Cage was blasted with a step-up enziguri but avoided a 450, hit a huge lariat, spinning slam, close two.  Before quickly hauling Dante up into the Weapon X (kinda like a Gory Special into a ddt, looked great) to advance in the tournament.

WINNER: Brian Cage

‘Lets go to the back!’ yelled Excalibur, in classic TNA style, barely seconds after the ever so important number one contender tournament match had ended.  To go to Lexi with Lee Moriarty & Stokely – it’s time for Lee to collect some gold, any gold will do.  Just as Hook turned up.  Hathaway hid behind Moriarty.

…..

House of Black video package played – all three members plus Julia Hart were shown here.  The idea again that they were being resurrected.

Rush vs Bandido, Eliminator Tournament 1st Rnd

Backstory: Winner will face Ethan Page in semis

JR really put Rush over during his entrance.

El Toro Blanco struck early, launching himself over the ropes at Bandido as he made his way down the aisle.  Then violently flinging him around ringside, into several sets of barricades, then attacked with the extension cord, as he has often recently.  The commentators explained that this was before the match so that’s fine then.

Apparently, Aubrey decided the newcomer was fine to compete. This booking is getting worse by the show.

An aggressive Rush quickly piled Bandido into the corner, launching a stiff kick to the mush before rolling back into his pose as the ads arrived.

Bandido was just fine as we returned: launching a frogsplash and shimmying like Latino Heat.  Rush slipped out of the delayed suplex, chops to the chest, thrust kick, big spinning elbow and a nonchalant cover for barely two.

Trying to fire the crowd up from the mat, Bandido continued to be beaten around the ring – a sort-of dropkick off the top from Rush barely made contact.  Yet they showed a replay.

Bandido then caught Rush up into a military press & slam, then they exchanged Germans which both no-sold, crucifix bomb by Bandido, spinning leg lariat by Rush, both down in the middle.

Bandido stood still for ages playing to the crowd while Rush was apparently paralyzed in the corner, unable to take advantage of the delay, but then hit a piledriver for two.  After which he beckoned for a chair, distracting Aubrey as Jose tried to remove Bandido’s mask.  Bringing John Silver out to knock down Jose with one punch and allow Bandido to bag a win via the most dangerous finish in wrestling – the distraction rollup!

You beat up Bandido at the start presumably in order to set-up a triumphant babyface overcoming the odds; yet he didn’t sell any sort of injury and was being beaten pillar-to-post until bagging a fluke win.  So why even bother with all the stuff at the start!?  Save it for a match that really matters and give it meaning.

This tournament is vomit.

WINNER: Bandido

Of course we have to immediately cut away again from the number one contender tournament to go backstage.  Jake Hager approaching Claudio – they go way back – and Claudio’s a hell of a sports entertainer, implying that he should join the JAS.  Hager lastly noted that ‘I like this hat’ – and I smiled for the first time all night (well, all show, sounds a bit morbid otherwise doesn’t it).

Nyla Rose vs Kayla Sparks, TBS Title open challenge

Backstory: Nyla isn’t the champ but has tossed out this open challenge anyway; Jade’s vowed to get her

Nyla was hamming it up to a ridiculous degree, I guess trying to be Jade, as she won with a pumpkick and Jaded.  Bringing Cargill and the Baddies out straight after.  The Baddies were sent packing but a pump kick of Jade’s own sent Nyla to the outside.  Cargill had to be held back as Nyla escaped again with her title.

Whatever.

WINNER: Nyla Rose

Orange Cassidy vs Lee Johnson, All-Atlantic Title

Backstory: They continued the gimmick where Cassidy just immediately offers/accepts title matches

Lee Johnson hasn’t been on tv for so long that I couldn’t remember which Lee he was when writing out the contest.  They have way too many guys to be using valuable tv time on him.  Particularly if he’s just going to disappear again for a year.

This started fast: the pair exchanging whips, leapfrogs, drop-downs, armdrags… until Cassidy darted out the way of a final armdrag from Johnson, launching the kicks until distracted, allowing Johnson to take over briefly before being run from buckle to buckle by Orange.  Best Friends pulled QT off the apron for the second time in as many minutes, allowing Nick Comoroto to throw Cassidy off the apron as the final break beckoned.

Both guys down in the middle, ref counting as Comoroto sent Chuck Taylor into the barricade on the outside, leading to Cassidy backdropping Johnson outside onto Comoroto before springboarding onto all of the Factory.

Back inside – he came off the top with a cross body and went for a tornado ddt – Johnson countered into a blue thunder bomb for two.  At which point Comoroto interfered AGAIN, dragging Cassidy outside until attacked by Beretta, QT & Cole Carter then attacking him until Chuck flew over the top onto them, then hugged his partner.

Back inside again, Cassidy missed an Orange Punch, Johnson bagged a two with his feet on the ropes, hit a pair of thrust kicks, then Cassidy hit Beach Break for the win to end the worst wrestling show all year.

Or maybe not.  We hadn’t had enough interference so Cole Carter came in after, being blasted with an Orange Punch for his trouble.  QT threatened to join them but bailed instead, leaving Cole Carter in the middle of a Best Friends hug. They then triple powerbombed him.

WINNER: Orange Cassidy

…..

Next Dynamite:

  • Le Sex Gods vs Claudio Castagnoli & Bryan Danielson
  • Ethan Page vs Bandido, Eliminator Semi-Final
  • Acclaimed’s latest music vid
  • Toni Storm vs the Bunny, Women’s Title
  • Death Triangle vs Top Flight & AR Fox (it’s great news for both brothers, the tag division, and us viewers that Darius is back), Trios Titles
  • MJF interview
  • There were more interviews advertised but I couldn’t keep up, apologies

Next Rampage:

  • Presumably the winner of Archer/Starks will face Brian Cage
  • Eddie Kingston & Ortiz vs Jun Akiyama & Konosuke Takeshita

Added to Full Gear:

  • Luchasaurus vs Jungle Boy, Steel Cage

…..

Overall impressions

A show which ostensibly seemed to be really trying to highlight AEW’s latest tournament instead turned into an overbooked blur where nothing had any time to have any impact… and almost nothing was good anyway.  Go down the checklist for bad booking and this’ll tick every box.

Check Out

  • Dante vs Cage was the only acceptable thing on the show because it was the only thing without constant and blatant interference.  But only if you’re wrestling-starved.

Thanks for reading.  Have a great weekend!

The WWE 24/7 championship officially done

The 24/7 title has been officially declared dead just a few days after Nikki Cross won it from Dana Brooke and then threw it in the trash can, missing, and breaking it into pieces on the concrete floor.

The WWE.COM website lists the 24/7 championship of having a run from 2019 to 2022.

The title was introduced by WWE Hall of Famer Mick Foley on the May 20, 2019 edition of Monday Night Raw and had similar rules of the Hardcore title, where it could be defended anytime, anywhere, as long as a WWE referee is present.

The inaugural champion was Titus O’Neil and on day one, the title had three different champions. It was defended in all corners of the globe, even mid-air on a flight and during a wedding.

The likes of R-Truth, Drake Maverick, Akira Tozawa, and others made it fun with several skits but after 195 different title switches, it was time to say goodbye to the 24/7 title.

R-Truth holds the most reigns with 53 and a combined 415 days as champion. Dana Brooke had 15 and so did Tozawa, but Brooke last longer with a total of 335 days as champion.

Celebrities, backstage interviewers, referees, and even Knox County mayor Glenn Jacobs all can be called 24/7 champions.

CM Punk returns to do commentary for Cage Fury Fighting Championships

Former AEW World champion CM Punk resurfaced on television yesterday when he went back behind the commentary table for Cage Fury Fighting Championships.

Punk joined CFFC commentator John Morgan for the event which was broadcast on the UFC Fight Pass streaming service. He had been doing commentary for CFFC since late 2018 but his work didn’t continue when he signed on for AEW last year.

Punk is currently out injured after he tore his triceps at the All Out match and was then suspended and stripped off his AEW title following the explosive post-show press conference.

AEW is in negotiations with CM Punk to buy out the remainder of his contract which would spell the end of his time in the promotion.

Saraya says she texted Sasha Banks first after given all-clear to return

In an interview on The Sessions with Renee Paquette, Saraya said that the first person she texted after she got the news that she was cleared was Sasha Banks.

Banks was the one who delivered the kick to her back in December 2017 which ended her career, until now.

“The first person I texted as well was Mercedes…Sasha. She was one of the first people I texted,” Saraya said. “All that stuff…that can mentally f*ck someone up to end someone’s career.”

She continued, “I just said, ‘Hey sis, I just want to let you know, since I know this whole thing was tough on you mentally, but my doctor just cleared me and told me my neck is 100% ready to go. I haven’t told anyone else but I know this will make you feel good. I’m back, haha.'”

Saraya said that she actually got cleared on Halloween and the doctor, who worked on several NFL, NBA, movie stars, and celebs, gave her the news after receiving the X-rays and CT scans.

“I just burst into tears,” she said when the doctor gave her the good news. He also said that paralysis is very rare and now she has some cushion in her neck and if she feels like she’s not feeling well she should just take time off to recover.

She did reveal that she can only wrestle one match a month for now until she gets 100% back in shape.

NXT rating for 11/08/2022

On a night simply dominated by the U.S. mid-term election coverage, NXT drew 664,000 viewers, down just 6,000 viewers from last week’s broadcast. In the 18-49 demo, the show actually went up 0.02 to 0.15 and placed #40 in the top 50 cable chart for the night. (Ratings credit: Showbuzzdaily.com)
