Could CBD prove beneficial for combat sports?

CBD has been growing in popularity for some time, and recent evidence is highlighting particular benefits for contact sports, including pain-relief and anti-inflammatory qualities. CBD can also help to reduce anxiety and improve sleep, both of which can ultimately aid performance.

In this article, we’re going to deep-dive into why exactly CBD is gaining such traction in the combat sports world right now, and whether or not you could benefit from joining the trend.

CBD:  Your New Recovery Companion?

Recovery from combat sports can be long and painful, which leaves you out of action when you would rather be training. While proper rest and nutrition can help with this, many wrestlers will avoid strenuous training for at least a week after a fight.

By interacting with the endocannabinoid system in the body, CBD supplements play a crucial role in pain regulation, immune system responses, and even sleep quality during those recovery periods.

As a result, many more athletes are now adding CBD to their recovery strategies, especially those within the hard-hitting world of combat sports. While more research is definitely required, there’s even some emerging evidence that CBD can be beneficial for muscle recovery and regeneration. While you should always include CBD as part of your existing recovery plan, it could, therefore, end up reducing the time you need to take between fights or matches.

Understand CBD Products Best Suited to Combat

There are now various different CBD products, including CBD gummies, oils, tinctures, and heat activation. Each of these can be beneficial for combat sport athletes, but some products are undeniably better suited at different stages of the combat journey. For instance, side effects including drowsiness mean you probably won’t want to take a gummy right before a fight, while CBD energy drinks certainly won’t help you to sleep better!

Ultimately, incorporating different CBD products for different times of day is your best option for getting the most from each product, and can be broadly broken down like this –

  • Pre-game products: Pre-game products might include CBD energy drinks or THC-free oil tincture for anxiety and stress relief.
  • Post-game products: Post-game products should include CBD inflammation relief gel and CBD deep-freeze or heat-activation products.
  • Recovery period: During the recovery period, beneficial CBD products include CBD muscle recovery oil, as well as CBD gummies and oils for general comfort and wellbeing.

Famed Proponents of CBD in the Combat Sporting World

There are some famed proponents of CBD for combat sports, and their experiences further highlight the benefits that CBD products could offer. For instance, ex-MMA fighter Joe Rogan has highlighted the health and wellness benefits of CBD across various platforms, specifically speaking about its potential to aid athletic performance and recovery. Other proponents include MMA’s Nate Diaz, Sean O’Malley, and even Mike Tyson.

While more evidence is needed to highlight definitive benefits of CBD in the combat sporting world, everything we know so far certainly points towards the fact that fighters could benefit from incorporating CBD products into at least some elements of their routine.

Lawsuit against WWE, Fanatics, and Cody Rhodes over American Nightmare term settled

The 2024 lawsuit against WWE, Fanatics, and Cody Rhodes over the use of the term “American Nightmare” has been settled out of court.

Wesley Eisold of the band American Nightmare, who filed the lawsuit, had claimed that Rhodes broke their 2019 settlement agreement when Rhodes trademarked the term for merchandise and he was allowed to use it as long as the term is used in conjunction with his name or likeness and imagery has to be at least 75% larger than the American Nightmare text.

Rhodes originally paid $30,000 for the agreement and Eisold was looking for nearly $1 million in damages, trademark infringement, and legal fees, after he tried to contact WWE, Rhodes, and Fanatics in 2022 with cease and desist letters.

It was not revealed how much money exchanged hands to make the lawsuit disappear.

Joe Hendry signs WWE contract

Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful is reporting through his Select service that Joe Hendry can now be called a WWE Superstar after the Scottish star signed a new full-time deal with WWE.

Hendry, 37, reportedly had months left on his TNA deal but somehow they managed to get him over before it was expected.

The former TNA champion has not wrestled for TNA since September and has made more appearances on NXT since then. He is set to appear on NXT Gold Rush in a mixed tag team match, his first match officially as a WWE wrestler.

Hendry had two great opportunities this year with WWE, appearing at the Royal Rumble and then having a match against Randy Orton at WrestleMania, replacing Kevin Owens who was injured.

Frankie Kazarian wins the TNA World title live on Impact

After spending months chasing the TNA World title and finally winning it at Bound For Glory last month, Mike Santana lost the title in his second title defense last night on the live episode of Impact from Full Sail University in Winter Park, Florida.

The first title defense also came yesterday, with Santana defeating Ryan Nemeth via a disqualification after NXT stars invaded the ring and beat down the champion.

That’s when Frankie Kazarian, who had the Call Your Shot Gauntlet trophy, came out and cashed in on Santana, who was being tended by medical personnel.

Kazarian wasted no time and hit his Fade to Black finisher but Santana managed to kick out. A chicken wing attempt by Kazarian also failed as Santana escaped and tried the rolling lariat, but Santana’s arm gave out and Kazarian rolled him up for the three count.

Santana’s reign lasted just 32 days and this is Kazarian’s first run with the gold.

Nikki Bella discusses turning heel on Raw

On today’s episode of SiriusXM’s The Nikki and Brie Show, Nikki Garcia addressed her headline-making heel turn on Monday Night RAW where she blindsided her tag partner, Stephanie Vaquer. She also discusses the hateful chants directed towards her at Monday Night RAW, the sacrifices she makes for her career and more.

Nikki Garcia discusses her headline-making heel turn on Monday Night RAW (3:01-4:29)

Brie Garcia: I think something that was cool is you and John were the top trending out of Monday Night RAW in Boston, so you know, it definitely caught everyone’s attention and everyone’s loving it. It’s fun to see the debates online, you know, because I think people were sad that you decided to turn, but I think a lot of people are excited to see heel Nikki.

Nikki Garcia: I think there’s more excitement.

Brie Garcia: Yeah. We all know heel Nikki is probably one of our favorite.

Nikki Garcia: I agree.

Brie Garcia: But then, you know, I was thinking, I don’t disapprove. You know, a girls gotta do what a girl’s gotta do.

Nikki Garcia: You know what I mean?

Brie Garcia: You know, and nowadays, there’s just, you know, it’s-

Nikki Garcia: It doesn’t always pay to be the nice girl, Brie. Doesn’t always pay to be the nice girl.

Brie Garcia: So this coming Monday night, when you’re at Madison Square Garden, are we going to be able to hear why?

Nikki Garcia: Yes, and so that’s why I’m not going to really say anything here, because I’m going to wait. I’m going to wait for a live mic and it should be in front of that MSG crowd and I’ll explain myself, because I got a lot I want to say, and there’s no better crowd to do it in front of them than MSG.

Nikki Garcia on hateful chants at Monday Night RAW & giving her all to her career (5:35-7:23)

Nikki Garcia: The hate’s so gross. Even some of the chants that I got last night, like it’s the same-

Brie Garcia: Okay, I thought I heard some chants I didn’t like when I was watching.

Nikki Garcia: But honestly, I think they got picked up more on TV because, or I was just too in my moment, but I didn’t even know. I didn’t even hear it, to tell you the truth, till I think mom told me.

Brie Garcia: No, mom didn’t even know.

Nikki Garcia: Oh, or then was it you? I don’t know. Maybe it was you guys on the group text, but Boston, I mean, Boston’s an amazing crowd. It was so fun.

Brie Garcia: No better crowd.

Nikki Garcia: Yeah, but it’s nice for these people with credibility that are speaking up, because I think at the end of the day, they all know. They all know how much I love this business, how much passion I have for wrestling, they know the work that I put in. You know, it’s not like I come on here and always say like, “Oh, when I had two days free where I didn’t have my son, I flew to Orlando just to get in the ring for five hours to fly straight back.” You know, I don’t talk about all that stuff all the time, but the people that know that know, and I truly love this business and I want to give it my all and I really loved what Biggie said because yeah. I don’t need to just sit around and always put people over. I know what I can do now. I know what my worth is and you’re going to start to hear it a lot more, and so you’ll wait for Monday for that, but what’s nice is I didn’t even, I haven’t even said a word and I love the recognition people are already giving. If you’ve seen it on social media or to talent, and so, girl, that’s all I’m going to say.

The Nikki & Brie Show hosted by Nikki & Brie Garcia is available anytime on the SiriusXM app. New episodes every Monday and Thursday. Listen to the full episode here.

Dwayne Johnson talks The Smashing Machine in cover story for Variety magazine

The Smashing Machine

In a new cover story for Variety, Dwayne Johnson, Emily Blunt, and Benny Safdie speak with Chief Correspondent Daniel D’Addario on The Smashing Machine.

Johnson discusses how the film allowed him to be vulnerable, dig deeper than he had in previous roles, and its box office performance. Safdie talks about the perceived rift with his brother Josh, Blunt discusses what happens when a film doesn’t do well at the box office, and more.

Johnson on digging into his “The Smashing Machine” character:

“I was in a comfort zone for quite some time,” Johnson says. “Making these big films — they’re hard to do, but they are comfortable. What I was scared of was exposing myself and exploring the deepest, darkest traumas.”

Johnson on what he was feeling when he burst into tears during the film’s standing ovation at the Venice Film Festival:

“It’s hard to find the language for it, because it’s so emotional,” he says. “It was just validation of this seemingly once-in-a-lifetime journey. Not only for us, but also for the man who actually lived it.”

Johnson on his experience of making the film:

“[It has] completely changed everything,” he says. “In ways that I could expect, perhaps in ways that I was hoping. But it completely changed the way I look at stories…From ‘Smashing Machine’ forward,” he says, “I will make movies for me. Because they’re my dream. Not anyone else’s.”

Safdie on the conjecture that there was a rift between him and his brother Josh after not thanking him during an acceptance speech:

“In that moment, I was thinking about this movie…I was talking about this movie. That’s where that came from.” The gossip about a rift, he says, “was shocking. Like, Oh, wow, that’s weird.

“We did great things together, and we learned in that process, and it just came to a place where it’s like, What do you want to explore, and what do I want to explore? And you just do that.”

Blunt on what happens when a movie doesn’t well at the box office:

“You also know that if the movie doesn’t work, they’re coming for you, and it is personal — and it hurts that it’s personal. But there’s a myriad of other reasons why a movie might not work, but they would come swinging for you. Exposure to that is not really for the faint of heart.”

Johnson on his relationship with audiences:

“I used to have this motto — ‘Audience first. Emily [Blunt] said, ‘I love that. It’s worked for you for decades now. But if you want to take care of the audience, show them a mirror of yourself. Isn’t that taking care of the audience too?’”

Johnson on how “The Smashing Machine” has allowed Johnson to be vulnerable:

“What this has allowed me to do — and perhaps I didn’t realize this in the past — is, when I find something, whatever it is, I can give my complete heart and soul,” he says. “And I want and need them to be different from each other. I’m not looking to deliver more of the same. For decades, it was audience first. But the thing that sets my soul first is an idea of audience first as my full self. My complete self.”

Johnson on how he didn’t think about how “The Smashing Machine” would do at the box office:

“Opening week. This is opening week. I had not experienced this until this film — I have not thought about box office once. Not once.”

Paul Walter Hauser talks Cobra Kai, turning to wrestling, MLW, and more in new interview

Actor and pro wrestler Paul Walter Hauser sat down with Chris Van Vliet at West Coast Creative Studio in Hollywood, California to discuss his roles in “Cobra Kai” and “I, Tonya”, why he turned down the opportunity to be in a movie with John Cena, having wrestling as a side quest, not being discussed in the celebrity wrestling conversation, taking bumps through glass and onto thumbtacks, working with AEW and MLW, which spot hurt the most, his upcoming role as Chris Farley, potentially starring in a Mick Foley biopic, and more!

On wrestling being a side quest:

“My pay differs based on the company too. If I were to do something with TNA, and they were like, ‘Hey, come do a match with AJ Francis, or a tag match, you’re gonna be paired with the Rascalz against three heels.’ I would want 10 grand for that match, because, to me, you’re also getting eyeballs and press and whatever else comes with it, and I’m going to go out of my way to make it as good as it possibly can be, at the risk of hurting myself. But if Action Wrestling down in Georgia is like, ‘Hey, do you want to come fight, take an L to Adam Priest or tag with your buddy Darian Bengston, I’m not going to charge them more than three or 400 bucks. I still got to drive down there and drive back. I don’t know if I’m selling merch or not. I don’t know if they’re not going to have catering, there’s X amount of things that you give up to just wrestle and have fun.”

On not being considered a celebrity wrestler:

“I know, and it’s frustrating. I’m not gonna pretend it doesn’t bother me a little bit. I’m working really hard, and I’m, you know, not every match is a banger for goodness sake. I’ve had some smelly ass matches. There’s probably six or seven of those 22 that I would like to hide somewhere and never show anyone. But there’s probably four or five, even six that I’m very proud of. You should watch me and Joey Janela at DEFY, you should watch me and Steve Maclin at Revolver. You should watch this promo I cut in MLW.”

On what his wife thinks to it:

“She does not like it at all, but I also tell her the truth. I take calculated risks. There was a time when I was taking edibles and drinking scotch and partying around this city in Hollywood, and that was way more dangerous than wrestling.”

On the conversation that if he gets injured, it could delay shooting:

“100% [I’ve had that conversation]. I did a pre-tape in 2024 for MLW. We did a match that was famously panned by the online community. They despised it. I had a match with Tom Lawlor, and it was cinematic. Re-watching it, there were a couple of things I would do differently. I would shave off three or four minutes, and I would also make it more 60 or 70% him, I would change the ratio a little bit on who takes what. But that match, we had already shot, and I was doing whatever I was doing that summer. It must have been the Wahlberg movie, because I was in Australia, and they’re like, Is Paul fighting a match tonight? Because they saw it on Instagram or something. And my manager is like, no, he already taped that. They’re just gonna air it. But they were freaking out, ready to read me the riot act, because they thought I was wrestling while I was shooting.”

Blood and Guts lives up to its name as AEW men and women tear it down on Dynamite

Blood and Guts

AEW had two Blood and Guts matches last night on Dynamite, including the first-ever women’s match.

The highly-anticipated broadcast did not disappoint, as both the women and men brought it, showcasing athleticism, violence, and everything in between. The women’s match, which kicked off the broadcast, lasted 46 minutes in total while the men’s match went even longer and clocked 54 minutes.

In the women’s match, the team of Mercedes Mone, Megan Bayne, Marina Shafir, Thekla, Skye Blue, and Julia Hart defeated Kris Statlander, Toni Storm, Mina Shirakawa, Willow Nightingale, Harley Cameron, and Jamie Hayter. This was a six vs six match, unlike the men’s match which was the traditional five vs five.

The heels got the win after former AEW Women’s champion Toni Storm surrendered to save Shirakawa, who was locked in Shafir’s Mother’s Milk and getting whacked with the TBS title by Bayne.

Later in the the broadcast, the team of Darby Allin, Roderick Strong, Mark Briscoe, Kyle O’Reilly, and Orange Cassidy defeated Jon Moxley, Claudio Castagnoli, Pac, Wheeler Yuta, and Daniel Garcia of The Death Riders.

Just like the women’s match, this had a ton of violence, amped up just a little bit more and it was former champion Jon Moxley who tapped out after Kyle O’Reilly got him in an ankle lock knee bar.

Ric Flair does not appear on Dynamite, but makes it out briefly for arena audience

AEW advertised an appearance by Ric Flair and Ricky Steamboat for last night’s Blood and Guts Dynamite but it was only Steamboat who made it live on television.

While he did not appear in front of cameras, the “Nature Boy” appeared very briefly for the audience as he did make it to Greensboro for the show. Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer reported that Flair was in pain due to a recent rotator cuff tear and could not be included in the planned angle, prompting re-writes for the show.

Steamboat worked an angle with FTR during the broadcast where he was confronted by the former AEW Tag Team champions and was about to get on the receiving end of a spike piledriver, only for Brodido to save the day. The Hall of Famer did eventually get some few chops in and the faces reigned supreme by the end of the segment.

Steamboat did mention Flair during his in-ring promo but did not refer to him as being there.
