AEW Double or Nothing 2021 PPV Pick’em report

Hello everybody! It’s @TheMagnumDA with yet another PPV Pick’em report! Today, the WOPC Championship will be on the line, as the Editor of WO (our very own Colin Vassallo) will take the title he won at WrestleMania: Backlash and defend it here TONIGHT at AEW: Double or Nothing. His opponents? The usual suspects: Tricky Don, Heel Turn Tom, the former WOPC Champion Brother Bull, and yours truly.

Three things to keep in mind:
1. Tonight’s picks are not “Confidence Pool” style picks – with the exception of title matches, each correct pick is one point.
2. We have a Bonus for tonight: Championship matches are worth DOUBLE the points. Seems appropriate, given the name of the show!
3. Most Important: If there’s a tie for first place (in any capacity between two or more contestants), the champion keeps their title no matter their score – hey, they don’t call it the champion’s advantage for nothing!

WITHOUT FURTHER ADO, ON WITH THE PICKS!!

“The American Dream” Cody Rhodes vs. Anthony Ogogo

Tom: I feel like this is a match to get a new heal over. Sadly, the American Dream will lose on Memorial Day for a future rematch with the American Nightmare. Anthony Ogogo gets the win.

Don: I am going to go with Ogogo. I think this match might result in Cody taking some time off to spend with his first child and family. Ogogo wins with the TKO punches.

Bull: If they’re going with “The American Dream” as his nickname, he’s not going to lose. Right? Right…? Anyways, Cody wins.

Magnum: I think, if Cody was going to roll with the “American Dream” moniker, he’d do it for longer than one night. For some reason, when he said that it was a “One Night Only” thing, a lightbulb went off in my head saying, “He’s going to lose this match.” In a huge upset, I’m going to take Anthony Ogogo.

Colin: Ogogo winning this would be huge for his career. But no, I don’t think he has a chance of winning it clean unless there’s some screwy finish, which AEW doesn’t do. Cody’s honoring his dad with the American Dream tonight so Cody wins.

AEW Tag Team Championship – The Young Bucks (c) vs. Jon Moxley & Eddie Kingston – worth TWO points!

Tom: Moxley and Kingston could being tag champs eventually, but tonight I see the Bucks winning this superkick party.

Don: My prediction is this will lead to a rematch at All Out. I am even thinking the first tables, ladders, and chairs match. To set this match up the Young Bucks will retain the title, but will lose by DQ or count out. Jon Moxley & Eddie Kingston get the win.

Bull: Hopefully the Bucks will be able to go on with tonight’s performance working through an injury (their ego’s were bruised when Wade Keller reported infighting amongst the AEW EVP’s). Young Cucks, er…I mean, Young Bucks retain!

Magnum: This has to be Cody and Tony K. placating the Bucks here, right? Bucks aren’t part of the main event picture, so they get a win over Jon Moxley to keep everyone happy. That makes enough sense to me – I’ll take the Bucks to win and retain.

Colin: Mox and Kingston are wasted as a tag team here. They should both be running singles. Young Bucks are great heel champions and I can’t stand them! The Bucks retain, somehow.

Sting & Darby Allin vs. Ethan Page & Scorpio Sky

Tom: AEW doesn’t have HHH in the match, so the first official match in AEW will have Sting and Darby going over with the win.

Don: In WWE Sting did not pick up a lot of victories. In fact, when he wins this match, he will have more victories in AEW than WWE. Sting & Darby Allin get the duke.

Bull: I’m also going to go with Sting and Darby getting the win – it’s a good program for Scorpio and Page, but I can’t see Sting losing in front of the fans.

Magnum: This is one I am very interested in – I honestly don’t know who will win. I know it would benefit Page and Sky to win, but I just can’t confirm if that’s the direction they’re going to go. I can’t go against Sting here – I’ll take Sting and Darby to win.

Colin: Sting’s first in-ring match since 2015. Looking forward to see how he does. Would be awful if he loses LOL but hey, it would be great for Page and Sky. Still think Sting and Allin will win though.

Adam “Hangman” Page vs. Brian Cage

Tom: I was hoping the FTW title would be part of this match, but it isn’t. I see Page hitting the buckshot lariat for the win against Cage, starting Brian Cage separating from Team Taz.

Don: Hangman will get his win back from the loss to Brian Cage on Dynamite. I’ll take Adam “Hangman” Page for the win.

Bull: Feel the rage! Page vs. Cage! Or something like that. Anyways, I see Hangman getting the victory here.

Magnum: Again, this is another situation where a victory would catapult Cage as a major player. That said, this is another situation where I can’t go against an established player. I’ll take Adam Page for the win.

Colin: I like Hangman. Terrific wrestler. I feel this one and the Cody/Ogogo match are the two least-important matches on this card, with no disrespect to any of the four involved. Page wins.

Casino Battle Royale — Christian Cage vs. Matt Sydal vs. Powerhouse Hobbs vs. Penta El Zero Miedo vs. Jungle Boy vs. Matt Hardy vs. Marq Quen vs. Isiah Kassidy vs. The Blade vs. Evil Uno vs. Colt Cabana vs. Preston Vance vs. Griff Garrison vs. Brian Pillman Jr. vs. Max Caster vs. Anthony Bowens vs. QT Marshall vs. Nick Comoroto vs. Dustin Rhodes vs. Lee Johnson vs. “The Joker”

Tom: This is a hard pick since I don’t know who The Joker is. If it is someone like Bryan Danielson, then I will wish I picked him. But of the names I know, I have to go with the wrestler who will out work everyone – Christian Cage.

Don: A lot of names make this match interesting! Harry Smith, Daniel Bryan, Okada, etc. I am going to go in a different direction and pick Paul Wight. He will be the last one to enter, and eliminate around ten people really quick. He will then be the first person to win the Andre the Giant memorial Battle Royal and Casino Battle Royal.

Bull: Interesting field here, but I gotta roll with the consensus pick – Christian Cage. He’s the next #1 Contender for the World Championship.

Magnum: I went into this telling myself, “Don’t pick Christian – way too obvious. Don’t pick Christian. Don’t pick Christian.” Then I take a look at the field, and I honestly wonder who is the next #1 Contender. I think the Hobbs/Cage angle on Friday was teased as a possible finale for this match. Could Hobbs eliminate Cage? It’s possible, but not likely. I have to go against my gut here – Christian wins it.

Colin: Who will be the joker? I figure a big name would not be #21 as this match wouldn’t have that much big of an effect. The winner of this match gets a future title shot and out of all of them listed, I would probably go with Christian Cage. After the big hype, he hasn’t really done anything, right? Maybe this will be the match to move him to a program with the champ.

TNT Championship – Miro (c) vs. Lance Archer – worth TWO points!

Tom: Odd to see two monster heels against each other. I see Archer making Miro more of a monster as Miro makes him tap out.

Don: On Friday the crowd rejuvenated Miro. I believe the crowd will declare Sunday, and thereafter…to be Miro Day. Miro retains.

Bull: Miro Day indeed! He JUST won the title – no way they’re taking it off him tonight. Miro wins.

Magnum: Loving the “Miro Day” references – but I think the past is going to be left in the past. Today is a new day, and Miro is THE MAN in AEW right now. He’s legit scarier right now than he ever was as Rusev. I’ll take Miro to retain tonight over Archer.

Colin: Should be an interesting match. WWE f’d up with Miro and thankfully now he is doing much better over at AEW. I can see him with the TNT title for a very long time. Miro wins.

AEW World Championship — Kenny Omega (c) vs. Orange Cassidy vs. PAC – worth TWO points!

Tom: There is no way the title is coming off Kenny. I see Kenny stealing the victory from Orange after he knocks out PAC. Kenny is still the champ at the end of the night.

Don: If this was a Mimosa Mayhem match, Orange would be our new champ. Instead, I’ll go with Kenny Omega – he is on fire, and it will be a while before he loses the title!

Bull: I like both challengers, but I gotta stick with Omega retaining the title.

Magnum: I’m also going to take Omega to retain the title – I think that a storyline with Cassidy could continue down the road, but I don’t see anyone other than Omega walking out with the belt.

Colin: I can’t see Orange Cassidy as a heavyweight champion of any major promotion to be completely honest. I don’t “get” his gimmick. I think it’s lame. Not denying he’s a great wrestler, but the whole gimmick just doesn’t work for me. Pac, yeah, he’s awesome and deserves it, but no one is beating Omega for now. So Kenny retains.

AEW Women’s Championship — Hikaru Shida (c) vs. Dr. Britt Baker D.M.D. – worth TWO points!

Tom: While Hikaru Shida had a great run and gets to wear the new and better-looking title its first defense, Baker will make her tap out to be the new women’s champion.

Don: Dr. Britt Baker has been phenomenal during the last year with no crowds. Tonight, is her night, and this will be the only title change of the PPV. Dr. Britt Baker D.M.D. wins the gold.

Bull: Yeah, I know they gave Shida that new title to celebrate holding the title for one year, but the celebration ends right there. Britt Baker D.M.D. is your new Women’s Champ.

Magnum: This is Britt’s defining moment. She’s done everything possible to make a name for herself without holding the gold…but you can’t deny her for another second. I think this could be the best match of the night – give me Britt Baker D.M.D. for the win.

Colin: I think it’s time to pull a title switch here. Shida has held the title for over a year. Surprised Thunder Rosa was not involved somehow because she beat Baker in that gory match on Dynamite and all of a sudden Baker is the number one contender. Wassupwiddat? But anyway, Baker new champion tonight!

Inner Circle vs. The Pinnacle (Stadium Stampede) – Inner Circle must disband if they lose

Tom: If I was booking this, I could see a way where someone like Sammy turns on his team to make Jericho get pinned and force the team to break up. But I hope that doesn’t happen and both stables get to continue on. The Inner Circle will get the win with Jericho pinning Spears.

Don: The Inner Circle lost the Stadium Stampede match last year to The Elite, and they also lost to The Pinnacle in the Blood and Guts match. The Inner Circle is long overdue for a big win.

Bull: I don’t know how, and I’m not sure what crazy antics are going to happen tonight, but I can’t bet against The Inner Circle here. I think they’re going to have an all-out, balls out match with stunts and high spots that we would have never imagined. Can’t wait for this match – Inner Circle gets a huge win.

Magnum: Man, the Inner Circle has been put in a corner here. I can’t see them breaking up just yet – I know Jericho is supposed to be touring with his band soon, but what would the other guys do if this group was broken up? That’s the big question. You know what? I can’t have the same picks as everyone else – I gotta go against the grain to win the belt. Give me The Pinnacle in a huge win. Goodbye Inner Circle!

Colin: The Inner Circle are not disbanding. And after losing the Blood & Guts match, there’s no way they will lose this one too, right? Wondering if this match will be live or cinematic, but either way, I’m picking Jericho and company to win.

There you have it folks! That’s our picks for tonight’s show. For all of our USA fans, we hope you have a safe and enjoyable Memorial Day Weekend! See you next time for the PPV Pick’em report! @TheMagnumDA signing off.
