Minneapolis hosted WWE SummerSlam on August 1 and 2, 2026, at U.S. Bank Stadium, and night two’s headline, no surprise really, was Roman Reigns beating Seth Rollins. Reigns retained the World Heavyweight Championship, and for the first time, rather strangely given how many chances he’d had, he got past his old Shield partner in a singles match, a feat that had eluded him in every previous try. U.S. Bank Stadium is home to the Minnesota Vikings, but for two nights running the organizers handed it over to wrestling instead. On the WWE calendar, SummerSlam ranks second only to WrestleMania, at least by attendance and buzz. It’s carried the nickname “the Biggest Party of the Summer” for years now, and for good reason. A two-night show in a brand-new city was, in its own way, arguably as big a statement as anything that happened in the ring.

How the show was broadcast

Both nights got underway at six in the evening, Eastern time, right on schedule. In the United States, SummerSlam aired exclusively through the ESPN App. Access was narrowed further still, to viewers on an ESPN Unlimited plan. Outside the country it was simpler. Netflix carried the international feed, having held the global rights to WWE broadcasts since last year.

ESPN treated the coverage like a serious commitment. Each night opened with a three-hour Countdown to SummerSlam and closed with a post-show breakdown, and on July 28 the network ran a separate special ahead of the event. That’s an unusual amount of airtime to hang on one wrestling card, especially from a network that has spent recent years easing further into the sport. ESPN usually saves that kind of expanded coverage for the major American leagues, not a WWE weekend.

A $100 million bet

Organizers were banking on 30,000 fans a night across the two shows. Minnesota Sports and Events put the combined economic impact of SummerSlam and the events built around it at $100 million for the city, not just for WWE itself.

Afterward the two shared a respectful fist bump, a small nod to everything they’d been through together as Shield brothers.

New champions crowned

The same night produced another title change. Chad Gable beat Penta with an ankle-lock submission, about as clean a finish as the night had to offer. That win got him the Intercontinental Championship, his first singles title. He landed it in his hometown of Minneapolis too, which only sharpened the moment. Gable had built his reputation mostly on tag-team work up to that point, so a singles win felt personal, and honestly overdue. Penta’s reign as Intercontinental Champion had run 153 days.

A ladder match hangs the title above the ring. Whoever climbs highest and grabs it first wins, simple as that. Chelsea Green beat four other women to claim it this time, Charlotte Flair, Jade Cargill, Tiffany Stratton and Lash Legend among them. The title itself only exists, as far as fans were told, because reigning champion Rhea Ripley is out with an injury; officials apparently created the Interim WWE Women’s Championship for the night just to cover the gap. Having five competitors in one ladder match is close to a guarantee of chaos, and this one, by most accounts, delivered on that promise in full.

For Minneapolis, SummerSlam doubled as a stress test. Could the city host a show of this scale? Going by Minnesota Sports and Events’ numbers, the bet paid off, and WWE now has a reason to bring the show back.
