Alex McCarthy of the UK-based TalkSPORT is reporting in an exclusive story that WWE is looking at hosting SummerSlam 2022 in the UK at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff, Wales.
McCarthy said that WWE held meetings with the venue while they were in town for the UK tour and former WWE champion Drew McIntyre was also part of those meetings. McIntyre told fans in London that they’re working on giving the United Kingdom a major pay-per-view next year. 2022 will mark the 30th anniversary from the 1992 SummerSlam in Wembley.
While hosting a SummerSlam in London would be the most expected considering the landmark anniversary, Wembley Stadium does not have a fully-closing roof while the Principality Stadium has a retractable roof that closes in case of bad weather. McCarthy also added that the venue is not a lock, but obviously it’s being highly considered.
The stadium, formerly known as The Millennium Stadium, has a capacity of 74,500 in a football and rugby setting and could host more for a wrestling show.
