Sami Zayn wins the WWE Championship in shock ending on Smackdown in Mexico City

A shock result in Mexico City saw Sami Zayn defeat CM Punk for the WWE Championship last night on Smackdown, kicking off his second title reign, one which he hopes lasts longer than the previous.

In the main event of Smackdown, Punk had to fend off interference from Candace LeRae and Johnny Gargano before Kevin Owens put the final nail in the coffin by mistake…or not!

During the closing stages of the match, LeRae had the referee distracted as Zayn tapped out to the Anaconda Vice. When Punk let go to go get the referee, Gargano came in and tried to hit Punk with the title, only to get a GTS for his trouble. Zayn was about to get the title himself but Kevin Owens slid in the ring and grabbed the belt.

With Zayn positioned in between Punk and Owens, Owens went for the kill shot on Zayn but he ducked, and planted Punk instead. Owens acted shocked first, but then smirked, and turned around to hit Zayn with the title, only to get low-blowed.

Punk at this point was in the corner and Zayn followed with the Helluva Kick and the cover, with a new champion crowned at Arena CDMX.
