Gunther surpasses one year as Intercontinental champion

Gunther’s Intercontinental title reign reached a full year yesterday, having won it originally on the June 10, 2022 episode of Smackdown against Ricochet.

The leader of Imperium is now gunning to overtake the only two WWE Superstars in front of him who have a longer reign than he does on one run: Macho Man Randy Savage at 414 days and Honky Tonk Man at 454 days.

Honky Tonk Man has the record of the longest-reigning Intercontinental champion of all time, with a record dating back to 1988. HTM’s reign came to an end at SummerSlam that year when the Ultimate Warrior came out and beat him in a few seconds.

If he beats HTM’s record, Gunther then has three people more up the chart in combined days as champion. These are Don Muraco with 539 days on two reigns, The Miz with 592 days on eight reigns, and Pedro Morales with 617 days over two reigns.
