Alberto Del Rio returns to WWE and wins the U.S. title

Former WWE champion Alberto Del Rio made his return to WWE at the Hell In A Cell pay-per-view, answering John Cena’s U.S. title open challenge to kick off the show.

Del Rio had a successful WWE stint between 2009 and 2014 which ended with Del Rio getting fired in August for slapping a social media manager backstage at a Smackdown taping after the manager made a racist joke towards Del Rio.

After leaving WWE, Del Rio returned to AAA in Mexico and wrestled for Ring of Honor as well under the name Alberto El Patron. He also moved to Lucha Underground to participate in the first season of the promotion on the El Rey Network.

The two had a nasty break up after WWE tried to prevent Del Rio from wrestling anywhere for a full year but Del Rio sued in return. Eventually both parties came to an agreement with a clause that said none of them can put each other in bad light in interviews, etc.

A few weeks ago there were rumors that WWE has restarted talks with the popular Mexican to bring him back to the company.
