Takedown tactics: the science behind wrestling success

There’s something primal about wrestling – two grapplers locked in a tense struggle, where raw strength meets cunning strategy. It’s a dance of leverage, momentum, and the will to win. And the key to mastering that dance? The takedown.

A well-timed takedown in wrestling can turn the tables in an instant. It’s both a powerful offensive weapon and a key way to avoid dangerous positions. But beyond brute force, what makes a takedown truly effective? Let’s break it down.

The Anatomy of a Takedown

A successful takedown isn’t just one move. It’s a series of actions, each setting up the next:

  • Setup: Creating an opening through feints, movement, or disrupting your opponent’s balance.
  • Penetration: Driving into your opponent with focused power, getting your body into position.
  • Finish: Explosively completing the takedown, securing control on the ground.

Power vs. Precision: A Takedown Taxonomy

Many takedowns fall into two broad categories, but the best wrestlers master a mix of both:

  • Power Takedowns:
    • Double leg: The classic blast double, driving through the opponent’s legs.
    • Single Leg: Grabbing one leg, using leverage and speed for the takedown.
    • Body lock: Powerful throws using upper body strength and control.
  • Technical Takedowns:
    • Arm drags: Using your opponent’s momentum to pull them off balance.
    • Ankle picks: Swift movement to sweep an opponent’s foot.
    • Throws (Judo-style): Using leverage and technique to turn an opponent’s weight against them.

The Role of Defense

Just as important as launching a takedown is knowing how to stop one. Sprawls, whizzers, and strategic movement are your arsenal for staying on your feet. Good defense means forcing your opponent to work even harder for the takedown.

Drilling for Takedown Dominance: Turn Practice into Progress

Practice makes perfect, but targeted practice makes a takedown machine. Here’s how to turn sweat into success:

  • Solo Drills:
    • Shadow wrestling: Visualize and execute takedowns perfectly (100 reps per type)
    • Penetration step drills: Explosive footwork is the basis of a powerful shot (50 reps per leg)
  • Partner Drills:
    • Chain takedowns: Mix up single leg, double leg, snapdowns (10 min, focus on seamless transitions)
    • Situational wrestling: Start in specific positions (start on knees, collar tie, etc.) to hone your go-to attacks (15 min)
  • Cooldown: Light wrestling, emphasizing takedowns without full force, builds muscle memory and refines technique under fatigue.

Takedown Trouble: Common Mistakes and How to Fix Them

Even experienced wrestlers make mistakes that can give their opponent the upper hand. Here are a few to watch out for:

  • Telegraphing your shot: Subtle head drops or posture changes signal an incoming takedown. Keep your setup as subtle as possible.
  • Abandoning your setup: Failing to chain feints and disrupt your opponent’s balance makes your shots predictable and easier to defend.
  • Getting stuck mid-shot: If your initial penetration fails, don’t freeze! Adapt your attack, switch to a different takedown, or bail out defensively.

Wrestling-Specific Conditioning: Fueling Your Takedown Engine

Wrestlers don’t train like other athletes. Here’s why:

  • Explosive bursts: Takedowns require intense power for short durations. Train with sprints, plyometrics, and weightlifting focused on power, not just endurance.
  • Wrestling in the lactic zone: Wrestling pushes your body into extreme fatigue. Conditioning should mimic that feeling (hill sprints, high-rep circuits).
  • Core strength that translates: Sit-ups alone won’t cut it. Focus on functional core exercises that train your body to transfer power from your legs through your torso.

Betting Picks and the Takedown

If you’re a fan of MMA, understanding the takedown strategy makes you a better bettor, and you can spot a winner among a sea of MMA betting picks. Look for fighters with these takedown traits:

  • Explosive Shot: Can they cover distance quickly and powerfully?
  • Technical Prowess: Do they have a variety of takedowns to surprise opponents?
  • Takedown Defense: How good are they at staying on their feet?

Beyond Brute Force: The Mental Game of Takedowns

Wrestling isn’t just physical. Top wrestlers have a mental edge too:

  • Overcoming fear: Hesitation is your enemy. Train to react, not overthink, your shots.
  • Setting traps: Feints and fakes draw out opponent’s reactions, creating openings for well-timed takedowns.
  • Staying relentless: Even if the first shot fails, the best wrestlers chain attacks, adapting on the fly.

The Takedown in Competition: It’s Not Just About the Move

The best wrestlers understand that takedowns aren’t isolated events. Here’s how to integrate them into your overall match strategy:

  • Dictate the pace: Aggressive takedown attempts force your opponent to react, disrupting their own game plan.
  • Tire them out: Even failed takedowns can drain an opponent’s gas tank, making them easier to control later in the match.
  • Open up other attacks: The threat of a takedown makes your opponent focus on defense, potentially creating opportunities for strikes or submissions (in the MMA context).
  • Score points: Obviously, a successful takedown directly earns points, giving you an edge on the scoreboard.

Conclusion

Wrestling is a complex sport, but the takedown is its heart and soul. Whether you’re a seasoned competitor, a dedicated fan, or just starting to appreciate the sport, understanding the nuances of takedowns makes it all the more compelling.

Four matches plus a Rock appearance announced for Smackdown tonight

Smackdown is live from the FedEx Forum tonight in Memphis and will be headlined by another appearance from The Rock. It’s going to be a special night for The Rock as he called Memphis his home during his early wrestling career so it will be interesting to see what he’s going to be cooking for the crowd!

Advertised matches for tonight’s show include Bayley vs Dakota Kai, Randy Orton vs Grayson Waller, Dragon Lee vs Santos Escobar, and New Catch Republic vs Pretty Deadly in a WrestleMania qualifying match.

Also, Hall of Famer Rey Mysterio returns to Smackdown as well!

The Rock lays the smackdown on Cody Rhodes and his mother in new online promo

It’s Friday and you know what that means…another Rock promo on social media! Ahead of tonight’s Friday Night Smackdown, The Rock dropped an eight-minute promo directed at Cody Rhodes and his mother following last week’s events where Cody slapped The Rock.

The Rock said that he had been waiting for Cody to “man up” and give The Rock a challenge worthy of the great one.

“That was a good slap, too. What did The Rock do? He didn’t pretend like he was angry. He didn’t get a bunch of goofs and jabronis trying to hold him back,” Rock said. “No, no, no. The Rock took your slap like a man. As a matter of fact, The Rock started smiling. Because The Rock likes pain. But that’s a whole other conversation!”

He then ripped Cody for crying during his promo on Monday Night Raw when he said that while he couldn’t present the title belt to his father, he could give it to his mother.

“Are you f*cking kidding me,” Rock told Cody. “You start f*cking crying? You start crying? That’s how you respond? No wonder all your fans are crybabies. Cody Crybabies!”

But Cody wasn’t the only target in his promo as Cody’s mother Michelle also got a smackdown from the People’s Champion.

The Rock said that Cody’s story will end at WrestleMania crying in a pool of his own blood and his weight belt sitting on his mother’s lap.

“And Mama Rhodes, don’t worry, there’s two things that you can do about it: Nothing and like it,” The Rock continued. “Cody Rhodes, at WrestleMania, your story is going to end courtesy of Roman Reigns and courtesy of your nightmare: The Rock. The Final Boss. If ya’ smell what The Rock is cooking. Now Mama Rhodes, don’t go crying too much now. See you at WrestleMania.”

Shayna Baszler to compete in Josh Barnett’s Bloodsport X show during Mania week

In what is probably a first, WWE Superstar Shayna Baszler will be appearing at Josh Barnett’s Bloodsport X event on Thursday, April 4 during WrestleMania week. The show is promoted by Game Changer Wrestling.

Barnett hyped Baszler’s appearance with a message on X, writing, “What does it mean when a Queen takes up the sword and marches to war? Blood. Victory. Glory.”

Barnett listed Baszler’s credentials and added, “The Warmaster’s disciple, ‘The Queen of Spades’ Shayna Baszler, comes to Josh Barnett’s: Bloodsport X.”

Reacting to the news, Baszler wrote, “You people merely adopted Bloodsport. I was born in it, molded by it. From Billy Robinson the the gene seed of the Warmaster himself…..BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD GOD!! #LimbByLimb.”

Letting wrestlers compete at other promotions is usually a big no-no for WWE but a new regime is in town and rules have seemed to be relaxed, at least in this case.

Rebellion 2024 main event set

The Rebellion pay-per-view main event was made official last night as TNA champion Moose will defend his title against Nic Nemeth.

Nemeth made his TNA debut at Hard to Kill by super kicking Moose in the closing moments of the show and now the two will get to go toe-to-toe on the second TNA PPV of the year, also happening at the Palms Casino in Las Vegas where Hard to Kill took place.

Since departing WWE, Nemeth went on to win the IWGP Global title but that will not be on the line come April.

This will be the first time that the two will meet in the ring for a match.

A guide for betting on WWE and pro wrestling in the U.S.

From WrestleMania to the weekly drama of Monday Night Raw, WWE, and pro wrestling events have become entertainment fixtures in the U.S. Betting on WWE and pro wrestling adds an extra layer of excitement to the experience for fans. Whether predicting the outcome of a championship match or speculating on surprise appearances, placing bets on these events has grown in popularity.

While sports betting and online casinos are still a legal grey area in many states, offshore platforms have filled the void for bettors. For example, in Texas, where sports betting remains illegal, many savvy bettors opt for international offshore sites and apps in order to wager on their favorite sports and wrestlers (source: https://bestsportsbettingtexas.com/betting-apps/). Alabama, California, Alaska, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Minnesota, Missouri, Oklahoma, South Carolina, and Utah have similar restrictions. This guide is a practical resource for those interested in WWE betting in the U.S.

Understanding the Legality of WWE Betting in the U.S.

Betting on WWE and pro wrestling in the United States is unique compared to other sports, primarily because WWE events are scripted.

WWE betting presents an exciting avenue for fans. Navigating its legalities requires a clear understanding of federal and state regulations, the implications of the scripted nature of WWE events, and factors affecting your betting experience.

  • Federal regulations. No specific laws directly address betting on scripted events like WWE.
  • State regulations. Each state in the U.S. has its own gambling laws and regulations despite a Supreme Court ruling legalizing the activity nationally. Some states have legalized some sports betting, but this doesn’t automatically include WWE betting. Bettors should check their state’s specific laws regarding betting on scripted sports events.
  • The scripted nature of WWE. The pre-determined, scripted outcomes of WWE events mean that insiders can potentially know outcomes in advance, which poses challenges for maintaining betting integrity.
  • Legal age for betting. Typically, 18 or 21 years old in most U.S. states.
  • Betting site regulations. Use only licensed and regulated betting sites to ensure legal compliance and the safety of your funds.
  • Responsible gambling practices. Betting comes with risks. Set limits on your deposits, wagers, and playing time. Different sportsbooks may use different formats for odds. Understanding these formats is essential for informed betting.

Events You Can Bet On in WWE

Not all WWE events are available for wagering. Here’s an overview of the key WWE events that typically attract betting interest:

  • WrestleMania. The “Super Bowl of professional wrestling.” WWE’s flagship event usually features the most significant matches and storylines.
  • Royal Rumble. Famous for its 30-wrestler match, this event offers unique betting opportunities, such as predicting the winner or the order of eliminations.
  • SummerSlam. A major event in the WWE calendar, often featuring high-profile matches, is a popular betting event.
  • Survivor Series. Known for its team elimination matches. Presents different betting dynamics than other events.
  • Money in the Bank: Includes the ladder match, where wrestlers compete to retrieve a briefcase that grants them a championship match at their chosen time.
  • Elimination Chamber: A unique contest inside a large steel structure offering various betting options.
  • RAW and SmackDown: Not as commonly featured in betting, some sportsbooks may offer betting options on weekly WWE shows, particularly for special episodes or matches.

Strategies for Success in WWE Betting

Betting on WWE requires a different approach compared to traditional sports betting. Here are some strategies that can increase your chances of success:

Understand the Storylines

WWE outcomes are driven by storytelling. Understanding ongoing storylines, character developments, and feuds can provide insights into likely outcomes.

Research Wrestler Momentum

Look at recent match outcomes, win-loss records, and performance in big events. A wrestler’s recent trajectory can be a good indicator of their chances in upcoming events. Their track record can guide betting decisions. Follow news about wrestlers’ fitness and injury status, as this can impact match outcomes.

Manage Your Bankroll

Given the unpredictable nature of WWE, it’s wise to bet smaller amounts consistently rather than large sums on single events, just like you would at an online casino. Sometimes, the odds set by bookmakers can provide clues about the likely outcomes. Significant changes in odds can indicate shifting expectations.

Conclusion

WWE betting in the U.S. is an exhilarating activity that combines the thrill of sports betting with the dramatic flair of professional wrestling. While it offers unique challenges due to its scripted nature, informed and responsible betting can make it a rewarding experience.

Mercedes Mone says she’s the “happiest she’s ever been” following AEW debut

Mercedes Mone did the media rounds in Boston yesterday following her AEW debut at Big Business which was held at the TD Garden.

Speaking to NBC10, Mone said that she’s the “happiest she’s ever been” in AEW and her debut went incredible.

“My fans from all over the world, it wasn’t just fans from Boston. They came from all over the world, legit, to celebrate such a beautiful and amazing moment,” Mone said. “To have it here in Boston was so incredible. To be out in the crowd and to see my brother’s face, my mom, it’s so crazy to see how far I’ve come.”

Mone was invited for the Boston Celtics game yesterday which aired on TNT and was shown on screen while commentators plugged next week’s Dynamite.

She also did an interview with Sports Illustrated where she said that 10 minutes before the show she was in gorilla position and could feel the energy from the crowd.

“When my music hit, I felt the energy and I knew I was home,” Mone told SI.

Mone revealed that when she had her ankle injury last May, the surgeon told her that it was career-ending, which was the biggest shock of her life.

“But I always knew I would be back, and I told that to my surgeon,” she said. “Now I’m healthy and my surgeon is calling his mentor saying, ‘Look at what happened here, it’s incredible.’ I don’t like being told no. I always believed I would be back, and now it’s true.”

Mone even sat down with Renee Paquette for a 12-minute interview to discuss her debut which you can see below.

Dynamite rating for 03/13/2024

Dynamite logo

Dynamite: Big Business with the debut of Mercedes Mone drew 798,000 viewers this week, up 19,000 viewers from last week’s episode and ties the third least-watched Dynamite of 2023 so far. The show had a 0.27 rating in 18-49, the same number of last week and was #3 on the top 50 cable chart for the night. (Ratings credit: SpoilerTV)

8th consecutive TV sellout tonight for WWE with Smackdown in Memphis

WWE logo

WWE is heading into tonight’s Smackdown from Memphis keeping the sold out streak alive with an eighth consecutive full house for a television taping.

The FedEx Forum in Memphis had a big uptick in sales over the last several days with both The Rock and Roman Reigns advertised to appear on the show. Over 12,000 fans are expected to be at Smackdown.

The streak is likely to continue into next week as Raw in Raleigh, North Carolina is also less than 1,000 tickets away from a sellout.

Mercedes Mone delivers the big business for Dynamite in Boston

A big walk-up ahead of the Dynamite: Big Business show boosted the attendance to over 9,300 last night at the TD Garden according to Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer.

The final figure, not official yet, will surpass the Dynamite Blood & Guts episode from the same location in July of last year which was 8,956.

The reported gate for the show last night was $345,660. That indicates either a lower ticket price average, which works out to $37 per ticket, or a heavily-comped show. As of two days before, Big Business was hovering around 7,500 tickets distributed.

Mone’s arrival has led this to become the most-attended Dynamite of 2024 so far, doubling and almost tripling the attendance of previous shows.

AEW is off to Canada next week, with shows in Toronto and Vancouver, and both are doing considerably well compared to usual AEW shows in the United States, with the Toronto one hovering around 5,000 and Vancouver at around 5,400 according to @WrestleTix.

Randy Orton and Rhea Ripley added to WWE World VIP Superstars line-up

Randy Orton and WWE Women’s World champion Rhea Ripley have joined the VIP Superstars line-up at WWE World during WrestleMania week.

The Viper will be appearing on Saturday while Mami will be there on Sunday and just like the others, they will each cost a cool $200 to meet.

WWE yesterday announced that Rey Mysterio and Becky Lynch were also being added for Thursday and Friday respectively. All other VIP Superstars scheduled – Cody Rhodes, Seth Rollins, Charlotte Flair, CM Punk, and Bianca Belair – are sold out.

Add-on tickets for both Superstars go on-sale tomorrow at 12pm ET at fanaticsevents.com/wwe/tickets. A separate general admission ticket is required.

Four professional wrestlers who made a name for themselves in the UFC

Look at any of the athletes in the UFC betting online markets, and you will discover that most specialize in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, a martial art based on grappling, ground fighting, and submission holds. While being able to punch, kick, and strike with power and accuracy is a sure-fire way of stopping opponents in their tracks, being able to dominate a foe and dictate the pace of a fight is where jiu-jitsu and, to some degree, wrestling comes into its own.

Over the years, many UFC fighters have appeared ringside at WWE events. Some have even stepped into the ring, but who has enjoyed the most success? Have any former wrestlers excelled in the UFC and made a name for themselves in the elite-level combat promotion while being revered in wrestling circles? You can bet your bottom dollar that they have.

Dan Severn

You younger readers are forgiven if you are unaware of Dan “The Beast” Severn, a former professional wrestler and retired mixed martial artist. Severn stands 6ft 2in and weighs 253 pounds, so it is easy to see why people call him the Beast.

Severn started an amateur Greco-Roman and freestyle wrestling career in high school, where he gained a reputation for being a formidable wrestler. His wrestling talent was such that the Arizona State University Wrestling Hall of Fame inducted him at the end of his collegiate career.

Unsurprisingly, Severn embarked on a professional wrestling career, competing in the UWF International in Japan, the National Wrestling Alliance (NWA), and the then-World Wrestling Federation (UFC). Severn also competed in the early days of the UFC back in 1994, becoming the first-ever UFC Triple Crown winner. He was the first man to compete in the UFC and WWF simultaneously, and he held UFC and NWA titles at the same time, too.

Severn was a prolific MMA fighter who entered the ring in 127 matches, ending his career with a 101-19-7 record. The UFC inducted Severn into its Hall of Fame in 2005.

Ken Shamrock

Ken Shamrock made his WWF debut during an episode of Monday Night Raw in February 1997. Wrestling fans’ first real glimpse of Shamrock came at WrestleMania 13, where he refereed a submission match between Bret “The Hitman” Hart and “Stone Cold” Steve Austin.

Shamrock was involved in many feuds during his time in the WWF, including Bret Hart, The British Bulldog, Vader, and most famously, The Rock. He eventually departed the WWF in 1999 following another running feud, this time with Chris Jericho. During his time with the WWF, Shamrock was a one-time Intercontinental Champion, World Tag Team Champion, and the 1998 King of the Ring.

Although Shamrock looks back at his professional wrestling career with much love, his heart was always with MMA and the UFC. He was part of the newly formed UFC, although he initially signed up thinking the UFC was wrestling and not MMA. He only realized his error when he saw Gerard Gordeau knock out Telia Tuli in the first fight! Shamrock won his first bout but lost to eventual UFC 1 champion Royce Gracie in his second fight.

Shamrock became the first UFC Superfight Champion, defeating the aforementioned Dan Severn at UFC 6 before losing it to Severn at UFC 9.

Shamrock is regarded as a UFC pioneer and one of the charter members of the UFC Hall of Fame.

Brock Lesnar

Brock Lesnar is one of combat sports’ most prolific athletes. He is currently the only person in history to have won the primary heavyweight title in WWR, UFC, Inoki Genome Federation (IGF), National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), and New Japan Pro-Wrestling (NJPW).

Lesnar signed with the World Wrestling Federation in 2000 but did not make his debut until March 18, 2002. Despite being a newcomer, he became the WWE Undisputed Champion after defeating The Rock at SummerSlam. It only took Lesnar 126 days after his debut to become champion, the second-fastest in history behind Ric Flair (113 days).

Lesnar left the now-WWE after WrestleMania XX in 2004, citing burnout, injuries, rigorous travel schedules, and an addiction to alcohol and painkillers as his main reasons.

The man mountain competed in Japanese promotions from 2005 until 2007, when he became an MMA fighter. First competing in the Hero’s promotion, Lesnar switched to the UFC in 2008 in a one-fight deal. Although Lesnar lost that fight, the UFC offered him a new contract.

He defeated Heath Herring in his second UFC battle and became the UFC Heavyweight Champion with a TKO victory over Randy Couture. Lesnar successfully defended his title against Frank Mir and Shane Carwin before Cain Velasquez knocked him out at UFC 121. Lsenar lost his comeback fight 14 months later. He returned to the UFC in 2016 but was disqualified after providing a positive drug sample after his fight with Mark Hunt at UFC 200.

Lesnar returned to the WWE twice before retiring and was meant to compete again in 2024. However, The Wall Street Journal named Lesnar one of the parties in the Vince McMahon scandal, and he has since been removed from the WWE.

Ronda Rousey

Ronda Rousey was the first American woman to win an Olympic medal in judo when she captured the bronze medal at the 2008 Summer Olympics. Rousey enjoyed another first when she was involved in the UFC’s first-ever female fight at UFC 157, defeating Liz Carmouche with an armbar in the first round. Rousey successfully defended her UFC Women’s Bantamweight title six times before losing to Holly Holm at UFC 193 in November 2015. She returned 13 months later and faced Amanda Nunes in a championship bout, but Nunes knocked her out in the first round, enough for Rousey to hang up her gloves.

While competing in the UFC, Rousey made sporadic appearances in the WWE, becoming a full-time wrestler in 2017. She won the Raw Women’s Championship in August 2018 and held it until April 2019.

In January 2022, Rousey won the Women’s Royal Rumble match before becoming the SmackDown Women’s champion the following month. Rousey retired from WWE in June 2023, returned in July, but retired for good in October.

Jim Ross says this is “more than likely” his last year as commentator

During the latest episode of his podcast Grilling JR, Jim Ross admitted that this could be his last year behind the commentary table.

Ross signed a new, one-year deal with AEW this month and he said that realistically, this could very well be his last year and “more than likely will.”

“That’s to be determined. That’s between me, my health, and Tony Khan seeing how much to utilize me. Right now, it’s a good plan because I’m essentially working, as I understand it, pay-per-views only,” the 72-year-old Hall of Famer said.

“We all know that in pro wrestling things change on a fly and things could be different, but I don’t think so on this occasion,” he said, referring to if he could be appearing on other shows.

Ross previously said that it was the deal he wanted and financially-wise it was also everything he asked for.

Bayley, Naomi, and Tamina Snuka attend Dynamite to support Mercedes Mone

Bayley, Naomi, and Tamina Snuka were in Boston to support their best friend Mercedes Mone and her debut in AEW at Big Business yesterday.

The trio were pictured together during the day and fans even managed to get a photo of Bayley in one of the suites at the TD Garden when Mone came out for the opening segment.

On social media, Naomi uploaded a funny video before heading to the TD Garden with all three trying some masks and wigs so “they don’t know.”

They did the same for Mone when she went to Japan and wrestled for New Japan Pro-Wrestling and Mone was also present for Naomi’s debut with Impact Wrestling. Bayley and Mone were at the TNA Hard to Kill pay-per-view as well to support Naomi.

Mone and Naomi share a special bond together ever since they walked out of WWE in May 2022 and Mone and Bayley have been best friends ever since their WWE Performance Center days.

Is there any chance of a Tyson Fury return to the WWE?

Standing 6’9’’ and seeking to grow his American fan base, Tyson Fury made the bold move to step into professional wrestling. This wasn’t a mere cameo, either. The towering Brit worked hard to build up a grudge with Braun Strowman, which culminated in a match at WWE Crown Jewel – which Fury won.

When the WWE came to Manchester, UK, Fury appeared to align to team up with Strowman for a tag team match, but that was in 2019. He did make his return to the wrestling scene in September 2022, being in the audience and intervening in the WWE Clash at the Castle rumble between Roman Reigns and Drew McIntyre.

The larger-than-life boxer has one of the biggest boxing events since the turn of the millennium on the way, but given his draw and clear affinity for pro wrestling, is there a chance that we’ll see Fury return to the WWE?

Two more boxing bouts, regardless of the outcome

In the first fight to decide an undisputed heavyweight king with four belts on the line, the experts just can’t split Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk. Both come in at 1.90, which is as close as you can get in the odds. Such a close contest has fans lapping up the bet365 bonus code NZ to back one of the two incredibly talented boxers.

Graded in review as an excellent welcome bonus, it grants up to $100 in Bet Credits to apply to the great odds that help to make it a five-star betting site. In the ring, The Gypsy King certainly has the physical advantage with his 85’’ reach – a seven-inch advantage – but many consider Usyk to be the most technically skilled heavyweight boxer around.

It’s very easy to see either one of them winning, perhaps more along the lines of Fury via a form of knockout or Usyk on points, but whatever the result, the May 18 bout won’t be the last. As reported by DAZN live at AJ’s fight against Francis Ngannou, Fury confirmed that there is a rematch clause for the battle to become undisputed.

Will Fury have enough in the tank after Usyk?

After the second fight, if Fury comes away with the belts, it would seem likely that he’d try to defend the crown in a big-money bout against a fighter like Anthony Joshua. Should he lose the second fight, and even the first one for two losses in a row, he could try to rebuild for another title shot, but that could take years, and he’ll be 36 years old by then.

So, perhaps losing his title would open The Gypsy King up to more WWE action. In October 2023, before he fought Ngannou, Fury said, “There is still a lot of opportunity [in the WWE].” Shortly after making that claim, ESPN’s interview with Fury revealed that he doesn’t intend to return to the wrestling arena.

He’s quoted as saying, “WWE’s too hard for me… It’s very physical and taxing on the body.” However, Fury’s plans change like the wind. He’s been retired more than once and had title clashes set in stone not to come to fruition. So, him saying he won’t return to the WWE now could very easily switch by the end of 2024 after two fights with Usyk.

The Gypsy King’s foray into the WWE was headline-grabbing and good fun, and while he may currently be against returning to pro wrestling, that could all change very quickly.

Mercedes Mone closes Dynamite, comes out to help Willow Nightingale

Mercedes Mone made her presence felt at the end of Dynamite last night after she came out to the rescue of a familiar face in the form of Willow Nightingale.

After successfully defeating Riho in the main event of the show, Julia Hart and Skye Blue attacked Nightingale as the crowd booed and chanted “CEO.”

It didn’t take long for Mone to come out, in a different outfit, to level the playing field. Blue rushed to take out Mone but she got taken out in the aisle and then Hart was on the receiving end of the Mone Maker finisher.

Willow, who defeated Mone to become the inaugural NJPW Strong Women’s champion, then raised Mone’s arm in the middle of the ring and left it all for her. Mone celebrated with members of her family at ringside and the fans before the show went off the air.

Minnesota officials “hopeful” that WrestleMania 41 is coming to the city

The Minnesota Star Tribune is reporting that Minneapolis is a finalist to host WrestleMania 41 in 2025 and is “within weeks” of finding out if the bid has been chosen.

Wendy Blackshaw, Minnesota Sports and Events President and Chief Executive Officer told the Star Tribune that its pitch included hosting the event at the U.S. Bank Stadium and was invited by WWE to participate in the battle for the show.

“We are hopeful, and I hope we get it,” said Blackshaw. “It would be amazing.”

The Tribune said that the winning city will find out next month of the result, a few days before WWE reveals the 2025 host city to the public.

Blackshaw attended WrestleMania last year for a first-hand look at the craziness that surrounds the multi-day event and said it was nothing like she ever saw in her whole life, calling it “unreal.”
