UFC fights fans hope to see in 2022

With 2022 in full swing, UFC fans are eagerly anticipating announcements for a number of fights that have been years in the making. After a couple of years of uncertainty with enforced cancellations and postponements, die-hard UFC spectators will be hoping that they will finally see some of the fights they’ve been crying out for. One such fight which has been recently confirmed is the Julianna Peña vs Amanda Nunes rematch. No date has been established yet for this, but the event will be covered by OddsChecker, with many fans taking advantage of their no deposit free bets to back one of the fighters. These fans will hope that other fighters follow suit and sign on for the contests that the fans want to see.

Shevchenko vs Nunes

Amanda Nunes’ defeat to Julianna Peña in December of last year is one of the biggest shocks of recent years since most fans and pundits didn’t think Peña even had the slightest chance of winning before the fight. While Nunes’ defeat by choke submission shocked the sport, she has built up such a strong reputation over her career meaning many look on the loss as a fluke. A mouth-watering rematch has been agreed and Nunes won’t be able to fall back on her reputation if she loses again. Should she come through this test, die-hard fans will resume the call for a trilogy fight with her long time rival Valentina Shevchenko. Nunes has already beaten Shevchenko twice, first at UFC 196 by unanimous decision and then at UFC 215 in a split decision. However, the fact that both fights went the distance means fans are desperate for the trilogy.

McGregor vs Anyone

Conor McGregor is probably the most popular and influential fighter the UFC has ever seen. He has played a huge part in the growth of the sport over the last ten years, making him a fan favourite and huge pay-per-view draw. Many fans believe he has taken his eye off the ball with other interests recently, and it’s hard to dispute this opinion when you consider that he has only fought five times since his 2016 rematch victory over Nate Diaz. Of those five fights, he has only won two, losing to Khabib Numagomedov and Dustin Poirier twice, which has led to many suggesting his time in the sport may be coming to an end. He certainly doesn’t need the money anymore, but fans are still hoping to see him in a few more big fights before he leaves the octagon for good. Hopes are high as he recently stated that he is close to a return, with Dana White talking up his chances of a title fight or a trilogy fight with Nate Diaz, although Diaz has rejected these rumours. The truth is, McGregor could draw a crowd shadow boxing in the cage by himself, so fans are hoping to see him back there at least one more time.

Leon Edwards vs Jorge Masvidal

Originally scheduled for December 2021 as part of UFC 269, the welterweight clash between Leon Edwards and Jorge Masvidal was cancelled in a controversial fashion. Masvidal pulled out amid a cloud of uncertainty, citing an “undisclosed injury” as the reason for leaving fans disappointed. Criticism of Masvidal increased when it was announced that he would be fighting Colby Colvington, with many fans believing he purposely pulled out of the Edwards bout in order to take a fight with a more prestigious opponent. While this may be enough for Dana White, fans aren’t letting him off the hook and continue to demand the fight with Edwards, so hopefully we’ll see it later this year.

Jon Jones vs Anyone

Like McGregor, Jon Jones is one of the fighters who can genuinely claim to have boosted the profile of UFC. He hasn’t fought since February 2020, when he defeated Dominick Reyes at UFC 247, due to several personal issues. While he isn’t getting any younger, at 34 he still has a big fight or two left in the tank. Tongues have started wagging regarding a huge comeback fight with Francis Ngannou, which would be a noteworthy pay-per-view event.
