Jerry “The King” Lawler gets his name on a Memphis street sign

WWE Hall of Famer Jerry “The King” Lawler got his name on a Memphis street sign yesterday, as a portion of Homer Street at Given Avenue near Treadwell Elementary was honorarily renamed in a ceremony.

The 76-year-old grew up nearby and walked through the neighborhood to Treadwell High School.

“There were so many memories on this street,” Lawler told WREG News Channel 3 at the ceremony, which also had a wrestling ring set up for the occasion.

“Nice to look at, but I’m not going to get into it today,” he joked.

Lawler is still recovering from strokes he suffered a few years ago.

City leaders praised the former wrestler for his accomplishments and called him an ambassador for Memphis.
