Samoa Joe surrenders NXT title due to injury

The relaunch of NXT already hit a big bump in the road as champion Samoa Joe has relinquished his NXT title due to an injury.

In a video recorded by Joe and released on social media, the now former champ said that the WWE medical department informed him of an injury and they want him on the sidelines.

“Recently, WWE medical informed me that due to certain injuries they would like me to step away from the ring for a brief, but yet undetermined set of time,” Joe said.

Joe added he knows that they are on the cusp of a new NXT, a new era in NXT, and the new NXT deserves a fighting champion, which made a difficult decision easier to make.

He then announced that effective immediately, he is relinquishing the NXT title and offered sincere condolences to that person who wins it because one’s he is healed up, he’s coming back to collect what’s his.

Joe won the NXT title at Takeover 36 on the night after SummerSlam in what was his first match since February 2020. A concussion-related injury kept him out of action for 18 months and since winning the title, he has not wrestled again.
