John Cena makes history with 16th World title reign at the Rumble

John Cena made history last night at the Royal Rumble, becoming the second man to win 16 World heavyweight titles, tying the record of 2-time WWE Hall of Famer Ric Flair.

Cena defeated AJ Styles at the Rumble in an epic 24-minute match, delivering one of his best – if not the best – performances in a WWE ring.

Out of these 16 title reigns, 13 of them were carrying the WWE Championship, while the other 3 were with the World Heavyweight title.

It all started at WrestleMania 21 when Cena beat JBL for his first major title. At the 2006 Royal Rumble, he regained the title from Edge and at Unforgiven 2006 he once again won the title from Edge in a TLC match. In June 2009 he won it from Randy Orton in an I Quit match, and again at Bragging Rights that year in a 60-minute Iron Man match. In February 2010, he won the sixth title in an Elimination Chamber, and in March at WrestleMania he beat Batista for his seventh. At Extreme Rules 2011, he won a triple threat steel cage match and on Raw a couple of months later won his ninth. At Night of Champions that same year he beat Alberto Del Rio for his tenth. At WrestleMania 29 in 2013 he went head-to-head with The Rock for the second time in a row to win his eleventh and in June 2014 he won his twelfth title at Money In The Bank. It’s been a two and a half year wait for Cena to put his hands back on the WWE title.

When it comes to the World Heavyweight title, Cena won his first one in November 2008 at the Survivor Series beating Chris Jericho, then defeated Edge at WrestleMania XXV in 2009 for his second, and in 2013 he beat Del Rio at Hell In A Cell for his third and final WHC reign.
