WWE announces the lauch of Network in the UK…again

WWE has announced the launch of the WWE Network in the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland for January 19, its third attempt to launch the over-the-top service in the area.

The Network will be the U.S. version, meaning it will be available on the Internet, iOS, Android devices, gaming consoles, Smart TVs, and other devices rather than a traditional television channel on Sky as it has been rumored. It will include all the pay-per-views as well.

The service will be available for £9.99 in the U.K. and €12.99 in Ireland with no commitment. That is significantly more expensive than the $9.99 price point with the rate converted to around $15.

In a video message on WWE.COM, Chairman and CEO Vince McMahon thanked the UK fans for their patience and said this time they really mean it when they say they will launch on that date.

In comments to British tabloid newspaper The Sun, Chief Brand Officer Stephanie McMahon said, “It is important to note we continue our very strong relationship with BSkyB and we are proud to be their partner. But the WWE Network is exclusively owned by WWE so it is important for subscribers to know they can only sign up via WWE.com.”

Sky this month announced a price increase for the WWE monthly specials on their PPV platform Sky Box Office, raising the shows by £5 to £19.99.

WWE failed to launch the Network in October and November in the UK with Sky denying they had stopped both launches. A Sky source denied to comment on a Network launch on their service at the time.
