Tomorrow’s Smackdown almost moved by two hours to accommodate WNBA Finals

Ramona Shelburne from ESPN is reporting that Smackdown was almost changing its start time this week to accommodate for the WNBA Finals.

Shelburne wrote that Steve Koonin, the Atlanta Hawks and State Farm Arena CEO, reached out to WWE President Nick Khan to ask if they would be willing to move the broadcast to a later start time so the final match could go in the 7PM to 9PM time slot. The game also airs on USA and CNBC.

Koonin has a history with WWE, having served on its Board of Directors under the leadership of former Chairman Vince McMahon and is also part of the current TKO Board of Directors.

According to ESPN, Khan was ready to accommodate Koonin’s request for Smackdown to air at a later hour but the idea of having a WNBA game on Friday night was eventually shot down by WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert who said that if they play Friday and a potential game 7 is needed, it would fall on election night next Tuesday.

Game 6 of the WNBA Finals between the Atlanta Dream and Golden State Valkyries airs today at 12:30PM instead.
