WWE drops the term Diva completely, unveils new Women’s title

WWE has opted to completely drop the term Diva to distinguish their women athletes and will now instead call them Superstars just like they refer to their male athletes.

In an editorial on ThePlayersTribune.com, WWE Chief Brand Officer Stephanie McMahon said that their female performers are “world-class athletes, actors, public speakers and philanthropists,” and that they dedicate themselves to WWE, achieve great success and earn the same respect as their male counterparts.

“Therefore, from this point forward, all of our performers – male and female – will be known as ‘Superstars,’” McMahon wrote.

Taking a page out of the UFC, the WWE Women’s title was also drastically changed from the Divas title and made it look exactly the same as the WWE World Heavyweight title, with the only difference being it’s on a white strap rather than a black strap. The UFC uses the same titles for men and women.

“This title belt represents the pinnacle of achievement in pro wrestling – and shows that in WWE, it isn’t about gender, race or ethnicity. It is simply about being the best at what you do,” McMahon added.
