Night of Champions name makes way for Clash of Champions

The Night of Champions pay-per-view seems to have gotten the axe WWE is replacing the name with a familiar one: Clash of Champions. Ticketmaster has also replaced the name to reflect the new one although it’s still displaying the old Night of Champions logo.

Originally Night of Champions replaced the Vengeance pay-per-view and made its debut in 2007 under the Vengeance: Night of Champions name. However the following year WWE opted to drop the Vengeance part of the name and Night of Champions has been a regular WWE pay-per-view ever since.

The Clash pay-per-view had a slight change in the name as back in the day it was known as Clash of the Champions. It started in March 1988 on TBS as a way to provide competition to WrestleMania. The first Clash broadcast was promoted under the NWA name and featured Ric Flair taking on Sting in a 45 minute draw as its main event. The name Clash of the Champions was used by WCW up until the last event in August 1997 which had a main event of Scott Hall and Randy Savage vs DDP and Lex Luger.

The WWE Clash of Champions will be held at the Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Indiana on September 25 and is marked as a Raw brand pay-per-view.
