Monday Night Raw TV Report for May 16th, 2016
Introduction Segment: Welcoming and Arena Promo
The regular Raw video plays, the pyro goes off, and we are live in Greensboro, North Carolina! Tonight, The Usos will battle The Club – Karl Anderson and Luke Gallows!
A.J. Styles makes his entrances and takes the microphone. He talks about WWE World Heavyweight Champion Roman Reigns being a “liar,” because of the accusations that A.J. has orchestrated The Club so he can win the WWE World Heavyweight Championship. Reigns promptly joins him and declares that he will be in his cousin’s corner tonight, (A.J. confirms that he will too be in The Club’s corner), and what he will do to Styles at Extreme Rules, which is to beat him and retain his title.
The Club walk out, but The Usos back up Roman. A.J. is given a punch by Roman that knocks him to the floor where Anderson and Gallows collect; the two sides stare-down.
Later tonight, Dean Ambrose will call out Chris Jericho in response to Smackdown’s events! Intercontinental Champion The Miz and Maryse walk to the commentary table, to announce the first bout between Sami Zayn and Cesaro!
Match #1: Single – Sami Zayn VS. Cesaro
(Note: Kevin Owens is now out on commentary too!) They lockup and Cesaro grabs with a standing side-headlock. He catches Sami with a big powerslam for two, but Sami counters with a flip over the ropes and a headscissors. Cesaro is on the outside and sits on the barricade, taunting Sami and Owens. This breaks down right away, as Kevin chucks Miz into the ring apron then they both brawl with Sami and Cesaro, inducing a double-DQ!
Winner: None due to Double-Disqualification
Post-match, all four continue to fight until Shane McMahon prances out. He announces that the combatants will instead be in Tag-Team action, with Owens and Miz facing Cesaro and Zayn – a rematch from Smackdown! Stephanie McMahon joins and switches it up, making Owens and Sami tag together against Cesaro and Miz!
Match #2: Tag-Team – Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn VS. Cesaro and Intercontinental Champion The Miz (with Maryse)
Owens has Cesaro in a standing side-headlock, then knocks him down with a shoulder-block. Cesaro hits back with an uppercut and goes for The Swing, but Kevin struggles to the ropes. He looks at Sami and yells, then harshly tags him in. Cesaro clutches Sami and Zayn counters with a wristlock. Cesaro kip-ups multiple times out of it, and turns Zayn around, but Sami grabs him in an armbar.
Miz is in and works over Zayn, but Sami come back, however is switched out with Kevin, who hits a running senton-splash! Owens yells at Zayn for not being quick on Miz. He tags Sami back in, but Miz gains advantage quickly after shoving Sami off of the apron.
Miz is still in control with a clothesline in the corner. Zayn flips out of a backdrop and stumbles into Owens for the tag. Kevin hits a missile dropkick from the second turnbuckle, and Cannonballs Miz for a near-fall! Cesaro is tagged and uppercuts Owens numerous times! Sami’s back and launches for a crossbody, but Cesaro catches him and gives him a tilt-a-whirl backbreaker.
Miz tagged himself in during the above, and throws Cesaro to the outside while he was going for a Swing! Miz goes to Swing Sami, but Cesaro plants him with his own Skull-Krushing Finale! Owens pulls Cesaro out and chucks him into the barrier. Sami gives Miz the Helluva Kick and gets the 1 – 2 – 3!
Winners via Pinfall: Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn
Post-match, Owens superkicks Zayn and proclaims “I won too!”
Segment #2: Locker Room Promo
Rene Young asks Chris Jericho about Dean Ambrose’s comments; Jericho speculates that Dean will apologize for destroying his jacket last week, and if not, then “Y2J” promises to make him “very, very sorry.”
Up next, the debut of The Shining Stars!
Match #3: Tag-Team – Scott Jackson and Brian Kennedy VS. The Shining Stars (Primo and Epico)
Predictably, the Puertorican cousins take this one quickly with their Shining Star finisher (legsweep and spinning heel-kick combo)!
Winners via Pinfall: The Shining Stars
Dean Ambrose is shown chatting with Shane McMahon; he will be out next!
Segment #3: Arena Promo
“The Lunatic Fringe” comes to the ring among “Ambrose” cheers. He says he “didn’t like” being trapped in the straight-jacket that Chris Jericho put him on last week on Smackdown. He calls Jericho out, and is replied. “Y2J” orders him to say sorry for ripping apart his light-up jacket; Ambrose denies the demand, and instead issues a test for a match at Extreme Rules. They babble back-and-forth until Dean reveals the type of match – an Asylum Match!
The concept of the Asylum Match is a Steel Cage Match that is topped with various weapons, including a fire extinguisher, straight-jacket, and a barbed-wire 2×4. Ambrose declares that there is “no way out!”
Replays of Roman/A.J’s confrontation from the start of Raw are shown.
Dana Brooke is walking through the halls and berates an assistant for how he looks. She is wrestling Becky Lynch next!
Match #4: Single – Becky Lynch VS. Dana Brooke
Becky controls early with armdrags but misses a dive from the apron. Brooke takes advantage, chucking Lynch into the corner of the barrier. In the ring, she stretches Becky with a bow-and-arrow lock, which Lynch kicks out of.
Dana catches Becky off a run with a scoop-slam, but Lynch hits back with clotheslines and a running-forearm in the corner! She spin-kicks Brooke and tosses her with an exploder-suplex for a near-fall! Lynch ascends the top turnbuckle, but is tripped by Dana. Becky counters with a sunset-flip, but Brooke reverses into a hurricanrana-pin for the 1 – 2 – 3!
Winner via Pinfall: Dana Brooke
Segment #4: Video Promo
The same “Make Darren Young Great Again” promo from Smackdown re-airs.
Segment #5: Office Promo
Stephanie and Shane are discussing renovations to their office when The Dudley Boyz walk in. They want the siblings to recall how good they were in the “Attitude Era,” and want to take on some local boys. Steph refuses, and instead makes them pick who will face Big Cass!
Segment #6: Video Promo
A montage of the saga between Goldust and R-Truth airs, which leads to their first team-up tonight!
Goldust and Truth make their entrance, and are now known as Golden Truth!
Match #5: Tag-Team – Golden Truth (Goldust and R-Truth) VS. Breezango (Tyler Breeze and Fandango)
Truth and Breeze are going at it, with Truth getting the better for a while. Fandango is in, and he and Truth double-clothesline each other. Goldust and Tyler tag in, but Truth accidentally hits Goldust with his jumping calf-kick. Breeze capitalizes and takes the W!
Winners via Pinfall: Breezango
Truth is chasing Goldust in the hallway, trying to make-amends. They have a disagreement about the finish and being a tag-team, with R trying to convince Goldust to be one. Fandango and Tyler Breeze poke fun at them, which encourages Goldust to accept him and Truth as Golden Truth.
Segment #7: Arena Promo
A giant, mysterious item is in the ring. Tag-Team Champions The New Day dance out. They talk about The Vaudevillians and their “bygone era.” Kofi Kingston, Xavier Woods, and Big E. unveil the item, which is a Time Machine. They all get in it and, after a quick mishap that leads them back to Kofi’s “Jamaican” days, land in “The Bygone Era.” They walk out in faux-mustaches and can’t believe what is lacking in the “Bygone Era.”
Gotch and English abruptly attack from behind and leave the trio out-cold.
Match #6: Tag-Team – Karl Anderson and Luke Gallows (with A.J. Styles) VS. The Usos (Jey and Jimmy) (with WWE World Heavyweight Champion Roman Reigns)
Jimmy and Karl begin, with Jimmy taking control. He tags in his brother, and Jey does the same, dumping both Anderson and Gallows to the floor. Both teams have a strategy conversation, then Gallows enters with Jey. He is it with a couple of uppercuts, but powers back with a couple of scoop-slams and three elbow drops!
Luke headbutts Jey then switches with Karl. He and Gallows govern for a while, tagging back-and-forth while working over Jey and Jimmy.
Anderson and Jimmy are wrestling until Jimmy manages to toss Karl over the ropes. He gets the hot-tag to his twin, who soars over the top rope onto both Anderson and Gallows! Jey follows with a top-turnbuckle crossbody onto Karl for a near-fall! He uppercuts and Samoan Drops, then runs at Anderson in the corner with a rear-bump! Jey goes to the top again, but Karl stops him and sets up for a superplex. Jey fights off, but is planted with a big spinebuster for two!
Karl measures Jey and hits the Rocket Kick (running front-dropkick), and goes for another, but gets a superkick from Jey instead! Both Usos double-superkick Anderson and Gallows, then Jimmy dives off the top with a Splash; he covers for the finish!
Winners via Pinfall: The Usos (with WWE World Heavyweight Champion Roman Reigns)
Post-match, Luke and Karl hit Reigns and take out The Twins. A.J. sees the chair in the ring and takes a swing on Roman, but the WWE World Heavyweight Champion interjects. He hits Styles instead with the object, and Superman Punches both Gallows and Anderson. Reigns turns around into a chair-shot from A.J., then is laid-out with the Styles Clash onto the chair!
“The Phenomenal One” looks frustrated at his actions as he walks away.
Match #7: Single – Big Cass VS. D-Von Dudley (with Dudley Boyz partner Bubba-Ray)
D-Von slides out of the ring and Bubba grabs a table from underneath the ring; this turns Cass’ attention, allowing D-Von to hit him. This doesn’t last long though, as Big boots Bubba hard off the apron, then drives D-Von to the canvas with his East River Crossing spinning-side-slam, and covers to get the victory!
Winner via Pinfall: Big Cass
Match #8: Single – United States Champion Kalisto VS. Alberto Del Rio (Non-Title)
Kalisto whips Del Rio off the ropes, but Alberto hits back with a shoulder-block. Del Rio props Kalisto backward atop the turnbuckle, then hangs him upside down. He kicks and punches on Kalisto’s gut, and we are shown Sin Cara watching backstage. Kalisto gets a little momentum, but is caught off an apron-hurricanrana and spun into the barrier.
Alberto is still in control, dropping Kalisto with a tilt-a-whirl backbreaker, then diving off the second turnbuckle with a single-axe-handle. Backstage, Cara is suddenly hit with a chair by Rusev, who challenges Kalisto for the U.S. Championship Sunday at Extreme Rules. Del Rio continues to direct until he is crotched on the top turnbuckle!
Kalisto springboards onto Del Rio with a seated-senton, then a springboard-corkscrew-elbow. He drives Alberto to the canvas with a hurricanrana-facebuster for two, then sees Rusev continuing to attack Cara. This allows Alberto to give Kalisto the Backstabber and get the 1 – 2 – 3!
Winner via Pinfall: Alberto Del Rio
Post-match, Rusev slides in the ring and gears up to punish his opponent at Extreme Rules. He kicks him hard in the head, then clamps on The Accolade. Referees have to beg him to stop, and Rusev eventually does. He takes the championship from the timekeeper’s area, swings it around, and smacks Kalisto with it.
Up next is the contract signing for the Women’s Championship Match at Extreme Rules between Charlotte and Natalya!
Segment #8: Arena Promo
Shane and Stephanie are in the ring, and both compete for the fans’ attention first. Steph then goes to announce Charlotte, but Charlotte’s father, Ric Flair, interrupts and introduces his daughter himself. The Women’s Champion struts out with her father. She takes in the adoration of “Flair Country” from the fans, and wants to get going, but Shane informs her of the other person who needs to be involved.
Natalya is brought out, and she criticizes Charlotte for the ways she has kept her Women’s Championship lately. Natalya says that she is not the Charlotte she first met in NXT, where Charlotte won their Women’s Championship against Natalya in a fair-finish. Natalya signs the contract, and Charlotte goes to, but objects.
She and Ric notices another stipulation that was added by Shane and Stephanie; Ric is not allowed at ringside at all, and if he even tries, then Charlotte will be stripped of her Women’s Title right then and there! As well, if Charlotte does not sign it, then she loses her championship immediately!
Shane asks for security to take Ric away, but Flair gets in McMahon’s face. Charlotte begs him to stop, but Stephanie slaps him instead! Charlotte goes for Natalya, but Nattie sweeps her up and locks her in the Sharpshooter! The Women’s Champion taps, and Natalya releases. The crowd chants “you tapped out,” as Charlotte collects herself and her father in the aisle. Shane and security hold The Flairs back while Nattie smiles and holds the Women’s Championship up to close the show.
End of Raw.
