Dr. Dugas comments on John Cena’s surgery and recovery

Dr. Jeffrey Dugas, the man who was responsible with performing the surgery on John Cena, said that that the former WWE champion had a complete tear of a small portion of the rear rotator cuff tendon toward the top-back of his shoulder as well as a large piece of loose tissue in his shoulder that needed to be removed.

It was not revealed when Cena suffered the tear as he just recently returned to the ring – on December 26 – after a two month hiatus from WWE to film the reality TV show American Grit for FOX.

The doctor also said that there was some deterioration in the AC joint and did not give a specific time frame for his return in the story posted on WWE.COM. “The first hurdle is getting the cuts to heal and getting cartilage to form over the defect,“ Dugas said. “After that, we’ll get back to function.”

A typical rehab for a torn rotator cuff takes from 6 to 9 months. Cena joins Cesaro, Rollins, Bryan, and Tyson Kidd on the injured list.
