Intercontinental Cup tournament scrapped

The Intercontinental Cup – a tournament involving eight Superstars to determine the number one contender for the IC title – has been scrapped.

It was supposed to start on tonight’s Main Event on ION which was taped yesterday before the Smackdown show however there was no mention of it all.

“I am pleased to announce that I have managed to negotiate a complete cancellation of the #IntercontinentalCup tournament,” tweeted Wade Barrett earlier today. “I think you’ll all agree that this is fantastic news. Warm regards, Your Intercontinental Champion.”

Meanwhile, Ryback will be the special guest on Miz TV on the show and the two matches taped are Tensai vs Titus O’Niel and Ryback vs Antonio Cesaro.

Intercontinental Cup starts on Main Event tomorrow

The number one contender for the Intercontinental title will be decided during a three-week Intercontinental Cup, with 8 WWE Superstars in the tournament.

The participants are Antonio Cesaro, Cody Rhodes, Dolph Ziggler, Damien Sandow, Darren Young, Kofi Kingston, Randy Orton, and The Miz.

The Intercontinental Cup begins tomorrow night on WWE Main Event on ION Television.

Time change for WWE Main Event tonight on ION

WWE Main Event will air 6:30PM EST tonight instead of the usual 8PM time slot as ION Television will air the 121212 Concert for the Hurricane Sandy Relief.

A replay of Main Event will air at Midnight EST right after the concert finishes airing. The two matches taped for tonight’s show are 3MB vs Justin Gabriel and Tyson Kidd and Ryback vs Alberto Del Rio.

WWE and ION Television say Main Event was a big success

WWE and ION Television today issued a press release announcing the success of the first WWE Main Event show on the network.

After ratings were released, Main Event garnered the highest male audience in the last year with the most Men 18-49 (422,000), Men 25-54 (444,000), and Men 2+ (876,000) on ION.

The show was the #4 program in the time period among Men 18-34, #4 among Men 18-49, and #5 among Men 25-54. The premiere delivered 518,000 Women 2+, finishing ahead of most female cable networks.

“The viewers have spoken,” noted Brandon Burgess, CEO, ION Media Networks. “Fans of the WWE are passionate and seem to have a knack for finding their favorite Superstars wherever they live. Needless to say, we are particularly pleased that WWE has found a new home on ION Television, and we congratulate our new partner in the success of the premiere.”

Vince McMahon, WWE Chairman and CEO, said, “Our partnership with ION Television is off to a strong start. We expect our fans will make WWE Main Event the number one show on the network as they have done for WWE programs with all of our other TV partners.”

WWE debuts on ION Television tonight with Main Event

WWE will debut on ION Television tonight with the first WWE Main Event show airing at 8PM ET.

The two matches that were taped for the premiere are Sheamus vs CM Punk and Santino Marella and Zack Ryder vs Tyson Kidd and Justin Gabriel in the WWE Tag Team title tournament.

Michael Cole and former WWE champion and current Intercontinental champion The Miz did the ringside commentary for the broadcast.

CM Punk vs Sheamus headlines first WWE Main Event show

WWE is bringing the big guns for the first main event for the new WWE Main Event show on ION Television on October 3.

As announced on Smackdown, the current WWE champion CM Punk will be taking on the current World Heavyweight champion Sheamus in their first-ever one on one meeting.

All matches for Main Event will be taped on Tuesdays before the Smackdown tapings.

Main Event premieres on Wednesday, October 3, at 8PM ET on ION Television.

With WWE Main Event premiering next week on October 3, ION Television issued a press release reminding everyone that WWE is coming to their network.

The show will air every Wednesday starting at 8PM EST and will feature original matches filmed prior to the Smackdown television tapings.

With the arrival of Main Event, WWE will now have shows on Monday with RAW, Wednesday with Main Event, Thursday with Superstars, Friday with Smackdown, and Saturday with Saturday Morning Slam.
