It took a couple of years and two stints with the company but after he surrendered the TNA X Division title to get a shot at the World Heavyweight title, Austin Aries defeated the longest reigning TNA champ Bobby Roode to become the new sheriff in town.
Aries is no stranger to long title reigns either as he held the X Division title for almost 300 days, only to surrender his title after Hulk Hogan made him a deal - vacate the title and get a shot at the Heavyweight one. The deal now stands that every year before the Destination X pay-per-view, whoever is the current X Division champion gets the same deal Aries did.
This is only Aries' second title run in the company apart from winning the X Division title, a title which he won last September at the No Surrender pay-per-view against Kendrick.
Aries' Heavyweight title win received a congratulatory message from the current WWE champion, CM Punk, who offered his thoughts on Twitter. "I didn't see it, but congrats to Austin Healy Aries (@AustinAries) Joe Seanoa (@SamoaJoe) and Me Myself and ION (@ZemaTNA)," tweeted Punk, referring to all the winners from yesterday's show. "Looks like somebody finally gets it. Kudos."
