I was going to wait until after Raw on Monday to write my column this week, but, I figure, what better time than the present, right? So, I’ll attempt to write a wrestling column while watching the closing minutes of the NFC Championship game. We’ll see how that turns out.
So, WWEHD is upon us? I’m very conflicted about this. I think HD will be huge for WWE. However, right now, for me, it means virtually nothing. See, my cable provider does not yet offer USA network in HD (or CW, for that matter), nor do they know when they will be offered; thus, the conflict. I am very excited about the day I will be able to watch my beloved wrestling in HD, whenever that day comes. I just hope the Royal Rumble will be available to me in HD.
Speaking of the Rumble, just like last year, I have no clue who will win the Rumble Match itself. I remember Rumbles past, when it was pretty obvious who would win. It doesn’t seem that way anymore. If WWE wanted to use the returning Big Show (if he’s still using his “slave name”) properly, they would have him as a surprise entry, and, go over in the match. A renewed Big Show could be just what WWE needs going into WrestleMania, and, of course, the new booking year.
As far as the rest of the Royal Rumble card goes; there isn’t much I’m all too interested in, to be honest. I mean, I’m always interested in watching wrestling, but, this particular card has nothing that I wouldn’t expect to see on free TV. Call me old fashioned, but, if I’m going to shell out 40 or 50 bucks for a pay per view, I want to see something different, something special.
I’ve said before that I’m not really about making match predictions. I used to be, but, then I realized it doesn’t really matter, so, why do it at all. I do, however, still have an interest in who comes out victorious in the matches. That being said, I will babble some about the matches, all FOUR announced matches;
Chris Jericho vs. JBL
I honestly don’t see what this match could possibly do to help Chris Jericho’s career at all. I fully expected Y2J to be chasing the WWE title for quite a while, not be feuding with an apparently broken down Bradshaw.
For JBL, this is a good match to get him back in the saddle, so to speak. I don’t think there is a better choice him than Jericho. Y2J could carry a broomstick to a good match. The problem here is, once again, I am not expecting a good match, I’m expecting something special in a PPV. JBL is a decent performer himself, although, he is more a ring psychologist, akin to Jake Roberts, than a dazzling performer, like Jericho.
Overall, this should be an entertaining match. However, it is my belief that the match should’ve happened on TV, on either Raw or Smackdown, not PPV. WWE should’ve built this feud longer, and, had a blow-off match later on down the road. Perhaps WM XIV, or, Backlash, or even Judgment Day (which will emanate from my hometown!)
World Heavyweight Title: Rey Mysterio vs. Edge
I don’t see Rey Rey getting another World Title run anytime soon. Edge is the top heel on Smackdown right now, if not in WWE altogether. He will hold on to that title any way he possibly can, for as long as he can. Besides, wasn’t Rey’s last run at the top not really anything to talk about? Why give him another run?
WWE Title: Randy Orton vs. Jeff Hardy
Mark my words; Jeff Hardy will never hold a heavyweight title in WWE. Never. He simply isn’t main event quality. Hardy will be a mainstay in the mid-card. He will have several IC title runs, as long as he stays healthy. He probably has a few more tag titles in him, as well. I personally just don’t see him carrying either of the companies “big” belts (ECW excluded). Then again, I’m not a 14 year old girl, either.
Ric Flair vs. Montel Vontavious Porter (MVP)
The WWE’s own Royal Rumble website does not list this match as being for the US Championship. Does this not scream “the champ will lose”? In addition, does anyone believe that Ric Flair’s career will end anytime before WrestleMania? At least he gets one “career threatening match” on PPV, instead of them all being all on TV. Personally, I think Flair should only be wrestling on PPV right now, that going back to my opinion of PPV matches having that “special” feel.
I hope more matches will be added come this week’s Raw, ECW, and Smackdown. I’m sure it will all come out in the wash, so to speak.
Well, to all of you who will be viewing Raw in HD this coming Monday, enjoy. I, myself, will be yearning for the day I, too, will be able to do just that!
By the way, the New York Football Giants pulled off the unexpected upset whilst I was penning this column, and, will be playing the New England Cheaters (Patriots) in Superbowl XXII on Feb 3.
On that note, I’m outta here……..Until next time……..
