Hello everybody. I’m back in my seat for another week. I returned last week from this year’s annual Cauliflower Alley Club reunion and what a reunion it was. From the first day there were events, legends, and stories to be told. The end of the reunion was capped off by a small gathering with Superstar Billy Graham and TNA Knockouts, but that’s a story in itself.
Monday started off at the buffet restaurant of all places. I was looking for the restroom, when I crossed paths with Paul and Maurice Vachon. It’s always a pleasure to talk with these gentlemen, and this was no different. After exchanging pleasantries, Maurice looked at me and said “You can’t trust a man with a beard. He’s trying to hide something.” This was followed by a big smile from the Mad Dog. Like I said, it’s always a pleasure to speak with them. You never know what they are going to say. At my first reunion in 2006 I was the victim of a joke from Paul, but I’ll tell that story at another time.
After breakfast, it was off to the Nevada ballroom where the nostalgia fair was in full swing. One of the first people I saw was Scott Teal. For those of you who don’t know the name, he was the co-author of JJ Dillon’s book, as well as books by Ole Anderson, Ivan Koloff, Downtown Bruno and others. He’s a great guy and a wealth of knowledge. I always enjoy talking with him. Soon after speaking with Scott, I crossed paths with Luna Vachon. She was there early for the nostalgia fair, and looking for her father and uncle. I informed her that they were down at the buffet having breakfast. I also told her about her uncle’s kind words and she agreed. You just don’t trust a man with a beard I guess. The rest of the day went by quickly as others were arriving during the afternoon and quickly milling about the room reuniting with old acquaintances that they only have the chance to see once a year.
Monday night was the wrestling card held by Pro Wrestling Revolution. Before the card, I had the chance to meet ODB and Awesome Kong from TNA. I had the chance to talk with them briefly and I have to say they are class acts in and out of the ring.
The card started off with all the wrestler around the ring for the National Anthem. It was quite a collection of indy wrestlers from all over the country, as well as a few recognizable faces peppered in. A bumblebee (or a wasp, as the name said, but it looked like a bee), a pirate and two throwbacks to the disco ere were just a few of the faces around the ring. There was also a young man with a sign that said “Will wrestle for food”. Only at an indy show would you see faces like this.
Just a few minutes into the show, it was announced that Superstar Billy Graham was in attendance. I have to admit that the fan in me came out at that announcement. It’s always exciting to see the stars that you watched on TV as a child in person. He was quoted after the show as saying this was the best indy show he’s seen in a long time. That’s quite the compliment for these young wrestlers.
The match of the night, in most everyone’s opinion, was the womens’ tag match. It was Cheerleader Melissa and ODB vs Awesome Kong and Jaime D. These four women wrestled one hell of a match that had the people in attendance watching every move. No offense to the guys but these women stole the show. Some even said it was the best women’s match they’ve seen in years. That’s saying something right there.
After the show, it was back to the room for some much needed sleep (I had been up since 9am on Sunday. 37 hours makes for a long day). Tuesday was going to be another busy day, and that’s another story for next time. Let’s just say that meeting the Iron Sheik is something you never forget.
