Gawker files appeal against $140 million Hogan trial

Gawker Media has filed its appeal against the $140 million judgment that a jury of six awarded Hulk Hogan over the leak of the sex tape.

On Monday, Gawker filed two motions – one that requests the verdict to be thrown out and the other for the damages to be greatly reduced – according to the Wall Street Journal. A hearing before Judge Pamela Campbell who presided over the trial will be held on May 25.

“Gawker is now beginning the process of challenging the jury’s verdict in a trial where key evidence was wrongly withheld and the jury was not properly instructed on the Constitutional standards for newsworthiness,” the company said in a statement. “So we expect to be fully vindicated. And even if the verdict were to stand, there is no justification for awarding tens of millions of dollars never seen by victims of death and serious injuries.”

One of Hogan’s lawyers, David Houston, said that they expected Gawker to file a motion for a new trial and an appeal. “It is apparent Gawker is unable to accept responsibility for their actions or demonstrate any intention of correcting their behavior,” Houston said.
